Chapter 1

Before I left, my father reminded me over and over, “Once you pass the boundary marker, left leads to the Demon Realm and right leads to the Immortal Sect. Your cousin’s name is Xie Changyin, and the Demon Lord’s name is Yan Lin. Whatever you do, don’t mix them up!”

But the road was just too long. I ate all the flatbread Father packed for me halfway there.

I was so hungry my head spun and my vision blurred. Then I spotted a cluster of mushrooms under a tree, so I went right over and started stuffing my face.

A passing woman shouted at the top of her lungs, “Little sister! Don’t eat those! You gotta cook ’em first! If you eat ’em raw, you’ll end up laid out on a board!”

I didn’t understand a word, so I kept my head down and kept inhaling them.

The more I ate, the more excited I got. The mushrooms in my mouth started tasting like chicken drumsticks, so delicious I nearly cried.

After I was full, I didn’t feel sick anywhere, so I got up and continued on my way.

Now, what had Father said again?

Left was the Immortal Sect, and right was the Demon Realm? The Demon Lord was called Xie Changyin, and my cousin was called Yan Lin?

Right, right, right. I absolutely couldn’t mix them up.

I patted my bulging belly, shouldered my little bundle, and headed left.

The farther I went, the steeper the cliffs on both sides became.

After who knew how long, I finally saw an imposing complex of buildings halfway up the mountain.

Two fat cats carrying broadswords stopped me.

“Who dares trespass in the Seven Evils Sect?”

So the Immortal Sect was called the Seven Evils Sect.

The Immortal Sect was incredible. Even its cats could grow this big!

I quickly said, “I’m here to find my cousin. My cousin’s name is Yan Lin. Do you know him?”

At that, the two fat cats went pale with shock.

“Meow heavens! She’s our Lord’s cousin! Hurry, take her to see the Lord!”

Lord?

My cousin was doing that well for himself? Amazing!

One of the fat cats picked me up by the scruff of my neck, and with a few whooshes, carried me through the mountain gate.

I seemed to have arrived at a bad time.

Outside the main hall, armored soldiers stood in rows. Everyone had their fists raised, chanting about taking down this and conquering that.

“Report!”

The fat cat set me down, then zipped up the steps. “Lord, someone claiming to be your cousin has come to seek refuge with you!”

I looked up.

Beneath the dark clouds stood a man in black brocade robes, tall and straight, noble beyond words.

Hearing the fat cat’s report, he turned his head and looked over, his brows drawing together slightly. “I have a cousin?”

I sucked in a sharp breath.

Father never told me my cousin was this good-looking!

Those long, narrow eyes. Those exquisite features. Those broad shoulders and slim waist…

After staring blankly for a while, I finally remembered I should greet him and hurriedly waved. “Cousin! Cousin! It’s me!”

Yan Lin fell silent.

A military-adviser-looking man beside him glanced at me and said in a low voice, “Lord, you do indeed have a cousin. If this subordinate remembers correctly, you and she had an engagement…”

Yan Lin paused.

“…You mean the woman who ran off with that great demon a hundred years ago?”

“Precisely. Presumably, she was abandoned by that great demon and had nowhere else to go, which is why she has come to seek refuge with you.”

“She actually still dares appear before me.”

As he spoke, he frowned and looked at me.

What was all that mumbling about? I couldn’t hear, so I just grinned at him.

“Hee-hee. Cousin.”

His brows furrowed even more deeply.

The adviser hesitated. “Lord, what should we do? Why don’t I take her and…”

“Forget it.”

Yan Lin said impatiently, “We’re short on manpower right now. Since she’s already here, issue her a suit of armor. She marches with me at once to attack the Immortal Sect!”
