Chapter 119

Gu Huaiwei had slowed down while searching for information on her phone earlier; otherwise, a sudden turn of the steering wheel would have caused the vehicle to flip.

She performed a roll, jumping from the driver’s seat into the nearby bushes.

The oncoming truck slammed directly into her car. Accompanied by a deafening roar, the front of the vehicle burst into flames. From the raging fire emerged two figures wearing golden capes. On the backs of their capes was a very conspicuous Sun Cross Mark.

“Where’s the Pseudo-Human? Did they burn up?”

“I don’t see them.”

The two blurred figures began to search the wreckage of the truck.

Gu Huaiwei didn’t dare to approach them. Without looking back, she ran deep into the woods.

She avoided the main road. After taking a pair of running shoes from her Jade Bracelet, she changed into an inconspicuous black jacket, tied her hair back, and left via a forest path.

She needed to make a phone call.

After running for about two hours, the lights of a city appeared ahead.

Gu Huaiwei found a small convenience store. The music inside was blaring. The owner had apparently upset his Contracted Human and was currently dancing to “Shake the Sun” in front of a camera to apologize.

“Shake the sun~ shake, shake the sun~”

“Baby, do I look good dancing? I specifically learned this from humans.”

“Just take one look.”

“Don’t be mad anymore, it’s all my fault. From now on, I’ll do exactly what you say.”

The shop owner’s dance moves were exceptionally flamboyant, making Gu Huaiwei feel like her eyes were being assaulted.

She walked up to the counter and asked, “Boss, my bag was stolen. Can I borrow a phone to make a call?”

“Not lending it. Can’t you see I’m busy? What era is this? Who still steals phones? No one even buys second-hand phones these days,” the owner dismissed her with a wave of his hand without even turning around. He didn’t believe a word Gu Huaiwei said.

The streets were fully covered by cameras.

Every two intersections had a Guard Hall.

The owner simply didn’t believe anyone would steal a phone in this day and age.

“Boss, do you have any cheap phones for sale in your shop then?” Gu Huaiwei took several tubes of Nutrient Solution out of her Jade Bracelet, intending to trade them.

The owner ignored her, instead speaking flatteringly to the Contracted Human on the other side of the screen. “It’s not some other single human… Oh, baby, I wasn’t ignoring you just now… Don’t hang up!”

Beep- beep- beep-

The human on the other end of the video call hung up.

Having failed to coax his partner, the irritable owner turned around. When he saw Gu Huaiwei, his expression froze. “You’re a human?”

A young, uncontracted human.

This was far too rare.

The owner pinched his nose, which was starting to soften, and his entire face slumped.

He thought to himself: *I’m doomed. If my Contracted Human saw another single human, she’s definitely going to be furious.*

Gu Huaiwei couldn’t have guessed the internal drama going on in the owner’s head.

She smiled and repeated her request. “Boss, I want to borrow your phone to make a call, or I can just buy one.”

She didn’t have enough Magnetic Value on hand, but if the owner was willing, she could trade with Nutrient Solution.

“Phone stolen?”

Gu Huaiwei nodded. “Yes.”

“That’s strange. In such a peaceful age, why would anyone steal a phone from you humans?” The owner scratched his head in confusion. “If a human is harmed in the process, it’s a death sentence.”

If she had said a Pseudo-Human was harassing a human, the owner would have believed it; after all, the instinct for reproduction and courtship was a factor.

But as for stealing a phone, the owner didn’t understand it.

He suspected Gu Huaiwei’s Mental Value was too low and that she was talking nonsense.

If Gu Huaiwei had told the owner just now that a Pseudo-Human had locked her in a cage and that someone had tried to ram her with a heavy truck, the owner would have certainly concluded she had a persecution complex.
Ever since the Aliens took over the world and enacted a series of measures to protect humans, things had been quite peaceful, aside from occasional violent incidents caused by extremist terrorist organizations like the Dawn Alliance.

The Pseudo-Humans of the new century did not worship violence. They loved humans-sometimes a bit too much, which could cause problems for the people involved.

In this Dimension, the most serious criminal charge a Pseudo-Human could face was harming a human through violent means.

Gu Huaiwei’s shoes were caked with mud, and her mind remained on high alert. Even as she entered the shop, she kept checking outside to see if anyone was following her.

The shopkeeper thought Gu Huaiwei looked a bit paranoid and asked, “Do you want me to call the police for you? Or maybe contact a human shelter?”

“Call the police.” The police in this world were actually quite reliable.

“Fine, then.” The shopkeeper wasn’t sure what to make of her, but he pulled out his phone and muttered, “You humans are precious protected animals now. I wouldn’t dare keep you here without reporting it. If something happened to you, I’d have to shut down my little shop.”

After reporting the situation to the police, the shopkeeper handed his phone to Gu Huaiwei. “Call your family and let them know you’re safe.”

“Thank you.” Gu Huaiwei took the phone and dialed the landline for the Oasis Matchmaking Agency.

The phone rang a few times.

Lin She’s cold voice came through the line: “Hello, Oasis Matchmaking Agency. If you’re looking for a partner, please register and fill out the form online first, then schedule an appointment.”

Gu Huaiwei’s voice was calm. “It’s me.”

Lin She’s tone didn’t shift. “Miss Gu, did the banquet go smoothly today?”

“It was a total disaster.” Gu Huaiwei walked toward the shop entrance, moving away from the owner, and gave Lin She a brief summary of everything that had happened that day.

“Miss Gu, thank you for your hard work. I have some good news for you. The first stage of the Oasis Matchmaking Agency’s mission is complete, and we are currently upgrading.”

Gu Huaiwei was a bit surprised. “So He Jiarui and Chen Liuxiang have already completed their Bonding?”

“Yes. After the coming-of-age ceremony ended, Miss He transferred the final payment into the Oasis Matchmaking Agency’s account.

“She also expressed her gratitude to you for helping her meet her true love. She plans to visit in person to thank you and bring a generous gift.”

“Hmm…” Gu Huaiwei fell silent, deep in thought.

The business with He Jiarui had seemed random.

In reality, throughout the process of facilitating the match, several strange points had emerged.

The strangest part was Chen Liuxiang herself.

She had appeared out of nowhere to strike up a conversation with Gu Huaiwei.

Chen Liuxiang was friends with Zhou Chuanning, yet she had badmouthed him in the restroom.

During their first date at the zoo, Chen Liuxiang had shown no interest in He Jiarui. Yet, after Gu Huaiwei contacted her, she had readily accepted the invitation and even agreed to the Bonding in such a short amount of time.

At the ceremony, Chen Liuxiang hadn’t been by He Jiarui’s side at first; she only appeared after Gu Huaiwei arrived at the banquet.

It was possible that Chen Liuxiang’s target had been Gu Huaiwei from the very beginning. As for why Chen Liuxiang was interested in her, Gu Huaiwei had no idea.

Regardless, the whole thing reeked of a conspiracy.

“A Pseudo-Human who looks exactly like you came to the shop today, intending to take over your identity,” Lin She reported another matter.

“Keep them alive. I have questions for them,” Gu Huaiwei said, her expression turning grim.

“My apologies, they are already dead.” On the other end of the line, Lin She’s forked tongue flicked past his thin black lips, his dark green eyes dim.

The moment that Pseudo-Human had walked through the door, Lin She and He Xueyi had dismantled them. The Skin Suit was currently hanging in the backyard to dry, while the flesh had been used by He Xueyi to plant a tree, placed next to the Matchmaker God statue as a decoration.
