Chapter 124

Lin She and He Xueyi had left without a word this time, and they hadn’t returned for an entire day and night.

Originally, Gu Huaiwei had planned to move into the Matchmaker’s Cottage herself.

But then Bai Miemie arrived.

She looked frail and weak, as if a slightly strong gust of wind could knock her over. Being a girl, she couldn’t be squeezed into the Employee Dormitory with Lin She and the others.

Gu Huaiwei had no choice but to let Bai Miemie stay in the Matchmaker’s Cottage while she continued to stay in the main hall.

Holding a pillow as large as herself, Bai Miemie blinked her big eyes. “Sister Gu, we can share a room. Miemie is very small; I won’t crowd you.”

Gu Huaiwei simply thought she was incredibly adorable.

With her round, flushed face, Bai Miemie looked soft all over, like a freshly toasted marshmallow that would stretch if pinched.

“No need, you stay there by yourself.” Gu Huaiwei didn’t have much resistance against such sweet-talking, well-behaved young girls.

As night fell, Gu Huaiwei wrapped herself in a quilt and curled up on the folding bed behind the office desk. Her cheek rested against the soft pillow, her bangs obscuring her eyes.

She did not sleep soundly.

A nightmare that hadn’t visited in a long time reappeared.

She dreamed of a flock of sheep grazing leisurely under a scorching sky.

A Shepherdess held a small wooden stick, preparing to herd the sheep back home.

Suddenly, a white crane dove from the sky, its long, slender beak pecking out the sheep’s eyes and its sharp claws disemboweling them.

Those sheep let out agonized wails, like those heard during childbirth.

Meanwhile, a black snake in the grass opened its bloody maw and swallowed a sheep whole.

Those sheep remained silent in its belly, like a bulging new grave.

She saw the face of the Shepherdess in the dream overlap with her own.

She heard all the dead sheep open their mouths and chant: “We still have one sheep, there is still one last sheep.”

The dream was grotesque and utterly illogical.

Gu Huaiwei rolled over, burying her head under the covers.

While this night was plagued by nightmares for Gu Huaiwei, it wasn’t a pleasant time for the two employees who had returned late either.

Inside the cramped Matchmaker’s Cottage, Bai Miemie had taken off her boots, revealing her sheep hooves as she curled up on the soft bed. She looked up at the two uninvited guests and yawned.

“Seniors, we finally meet.”

“Your hooves are showing.” Lin She stared gloomily at Bai Miemie’s exposed sheep hooves. “Before the gates of Paradise are opened, do not show your true form in front of Miss Gu.”

“Please, I’m a vegetarian. It’s exhausting to maintain this form every day.” Bai Miemie covered her feet with the quilt, her cheeks puffing out. “I wear shoes during the day. There aren’t any other humans around at night anyway. If you don’t like looking at them, then don’t look.”

“Lin She, you’re being disliked by the new employee.” He Xueyi had a warm, gentle smile on his face.

“I don’t need her to like me.”

Lin She didn’t care about his relationship with anyone. He loathed hypocritical words. If he could have it his way, he wished only he and Gu Huaiwei were in this shop.

He Xueyi shrugged. “You really are quite the loner.”

“He Xueyi, stop pretending. You’re no saint either.” Bai Miemie pouted. “You two killed so many of my brothers and sisters. If it weren’t for the sake of nurturing Shopkeeper Sister and opening the gates of Paradise, I wouldn’t be speaking so civilly with you.”

Bai Miemie was the last sheep to escape.

Since she held a job application form and had received the Boss’s permission to be recruited into the shop by Gu Huaiwei, there was nothing they could do to her.

“Don’t be like that. Since we come from the same place, let’s try to get along.” He Xueyi pulled out a small green fruit. “Want a taste? Vegetarian.”
Bai Miemie immediately crawled to the edge of the bed and pressed her nose against the small fruit. After a sniff, she said happily, “It smells so good. Was it grown inside a human body?”

“You have a good eye.” He Xueyi reached out and patted her short, curly hair.

Lin She couldn’t be bothered to watch their interaction.

Before turning to leave, he dropped a cold remark: “Miss Gu isn’t here. There’s no one to watch your performance of brotherly and sisterly love.”

“Hmph, this is my room. Remember to knock next time you come in.”

Bai Miemie popped the small fruit from He Xueyi’s hand into her mouth. Watching Lin She’s retreating figure, she tilted her head and asked He Xueyi, “In Paradise, he’s the most like a stiff piece of wood. Once the gates to Paradise open, I really don’t want to sit at the same dining table as him.”

“My thoughts exactly.” He Xueyi looked at the glistening saliva on his fingertips, suppressed the disgust in his eyes, and wiped them clean with a wet wipe. “I don’t particularly like sharing, either.”

Gu Huaiwei woke up a bit late the next morning.

If it hadn’t been for the repeated urging of her alarm clock and the fact that the Matchmaking Agency was opening for business, she would have stayed in bed to sleep in.

Gu Huaiwei’s makeup routine had been getting simpler and simpler lately; she basically just covered the moles on her face and called it a day.

When she got up, she saw Bai Miemie with a kerchief tied around her head, mop in hand, meticulously cleaning the newly unlocked Home Party Hall.

“Good morning, Sister Gu!” Bai Miemie waved at her, full of energy. “I took a little peek at the proposal on your desk and thought I’d clean up the Home Party Hall first. Sister, I didn’t do anything wrong by doing that, did I?”

As she spoke, Bai Miemie’s tone grew timid, like a child who lacked confidence and feared making a mistake.

“I didn’t mean to snoop. It’s just that your handwriting is so beautiful, Sister, that I couldn’t help but take a peek, and then another.”

“It’s fine. Diligence is a virtue.” Gu Huaiwei thought of the weeds beneath the Matchmaker God statue by the entrance that hadn’t been cleared for over a month, and Bai Miemie became even more pleasing to her eye.

Gu Huaiwei saw He Xueyi and Lin She later that morning.

Lin She was designing the venue decoration plan for the upcoming Matchmaking Event. Gu Huaiwei had no complaints about him.

He Xueyi, on the other hand, had been chatting with girls at the entrance since early morning.

Gu Huaiwei was just thinking about finding some proper work for He Xueyi when she heard him swindling a customer.

“I can see your future. You are about to meet your fated one.” He Xueyi lightly tapped the human girl’s forehead with his fingertip, his tone gentle. “He possesses a perfect Skin Suit and is a Pseudo-Human who understands human nature. He will appear by your side when you need him most.”

The girl listened with rapt attention, a hint of shyness appearing on her face. She asked expectantly, “Then how should I meet him?”

“Burn a stick of incense and pray sincerely.” He Xueyi handed over a stick of incense while simultaneously opening the payment page on his device.

“You always say that. I’ve been burning incense for days in a row…” Although the girl complained, she still bought a stick.

“Persist for a few more days.” He Xueyi narrowed his glazed golden eyes, his gaze full of affection. “I like the way you look when you burn incense. You’re so focused, like a devout Nun beneath a divine temple.”

The girl’s face flushed crimson instantly.

“As long as you are sincere enough, the gods will hear your wish.”

Listening to this made Gu Huaiwei’s teeth ache.

She thought of the revenue that burning incense at the Matchmaker God statue brought to the Matchmaking Agency and decided to let He Xueyi do as he pleased.

All three employees were contributing to the Oasis Matchmaking Agency in their own ways.

As the manager, Gu Huaiwei felt she had a responsibility to work hard as well. She stuck her hands in her pockets, preparing to return to her desk to continue refining the Matchmaking Event’s planning proposal.

Her fingertips brushed against the cold surface of the mirror in her pocket, and she paused.

If she used the mirror on Lin She and the others, what would she see?
