Chapter 125

The mirror was small, but it felt like a tempting Pandora’s box.

Whether she looked or not wouldn’t change their status as employees, only Gu Huaiwei’s peace of mind.

But curiosity was like a bed of coals-seemingly extinguished on the surface, yet glowing red underneath. The slightest breeze would cause it to flare up and burn.

It was bound to catch fire sooner or later anyway.

So, she chose today.

Gu Huaiwei’s gaze shifted between Lin She, who was focused on his keyboard at his workstation; Bai Miemie, who was humming while cleaning the Home Party Hall; and He Xueyi, who was chatting away with customers at the entrance.

She decided to start with the honest, hardworking employee: Lin She.

Gu Huaiwei pursed her lips, the corners of her eyes crinkling slightly. She crept along the wall, found the perfect angle, and concealed the mirror within her palm.

Magic mirror, magic mirror, tell me: Is Lin She actually a giant snake spirit?

Gu Huaiwei pulled out the mirror and adjusted its angle.

At that exact moment, something went wrong. Lin She suddenly looked up, his dark green eyes fixing directly on Gu Huaiwei.

Precise, without a single blink.

Their gazes met in mid-air.

*Oh no,* Gu Huaiwei thought.

She’d been caught red-handed!

She had been so quiet-how did he notice her?

Because of Lin She’s sudden stare, Gu Huaiwei could only shove the mirror back into her pocket. She stepped out as if nothing were wrong, rubbed her nose, and gave Lin She an awkward but polite smile.

“Good morning, Lin She. Hard at work so early? You’re doing a great job.” In moments like this, people tended to ask the obvious just to find a way out of the situation, and Gu Huaiwei was no exception.

Lin She didn’t speak. He just watched her, motionless.

His bottomless, dark green eyes held a sinister chill, like an ancient well that never saw the sun-cold and hollow.

Gu Huaiwei pointed to the kettle nearby. “Uh… do you want me to make you a cup of coffee to wake you up?”

“No need,” Lin She refused flatly. His slitted pupils tracked Gu Huaiwei’s every small movement.

Feeling uncomfortable under his gaze, Gu Huaiwei looked away. “Then keep at it. I won’t disturb you.”

Just as Gu Huaiwei lifted her foot, ready to slip away and make a run for it, Lin She spoke.

“You were looking at me just now.”

“Haha, was I?”

Lin She’s gaze remained firmly locked on her, not shifting an inch.

His words offered her no way to save face.

Is he really that sharp?

“I was just passing by and admiring your heroic dedication to your work.” Since she couldn’t escape, Gu Huaiwei kept her hand in her pocket, gripping the mirror, hoping to end this unfortunate conversation quickly.

There was no emotional flicker on Lin She’s bloodless face.

“When I worked before, you never looked.”

“That’s not necessarily true. I care a lot about your daily work,” Gu Huaiwei said, blinking and tilting her head as she talked nonsense. “I looked before too, but you were just so focused on your work that you didn’t notice me watching you.”

Lin She stated the facts in a flat, level voice. “That is not true. Even with my back to you, I can feel your gaze. Therefore, there is no situation in which I would not notice.”

“Oh… well, you’re pretty impressive then.” Gu Huaiwei was choked up by his words. She realized with some frustration that for someone as literal-minded as Lin She, trying to change the subject with excuses was useless.

He would respond to every single thing Gu Huaiwei said with absolute seriousness, even if those words were just excuses.

“You can sit over here and watch me work,” Lin She offered with a sincere invitation.

Gu Huaiwei knew he wasn’t joking.

She definitely didn’t want to sit there and watch him work; it would be awkward as hell.

“No, that would be too distracting while you’re drawing up designs. You keep going, I’m going to go check on He Xueyi.”

Gu Huaiwei wanted to get out of there as fast as possible.

“You’re not going to look at me, but you’re going to look at him?” Lin She’s thin black lips parted slightly. His black hair shadowed his dark green, brooding eyes. “The things he does can hardly be called work. He only uses pretentious words and a fake appearance to bewitch the human mind. Do not be deceived by his facade.”
As he spoke, Lin She’s voice grew lower and lower. The corners of his mouth dipped slightly, and beneath his indifferent expression, there was a sense of calm madness.

One new assistant after another had left him feeling displeased.

He preferred to work alone.

He was naturally quiet and disliked overly bustling work environments.

The successive arrivals of He Xueyi and Bai Miemie had disrupted his pace in assisting Gu Huaiwei with opening the Paradise Gate.

Gu Huaiwei sensed his mood and immediately followed his lead.

“You’re right. I’ll go criticize him right now for neglecting his duties all day and just shooting the breeze with customers. I’ll make sure he corrects his work attitude and straightens out his professional conduct.”

Only then did Lin She nod. “You could be even stricter with him.”

“Right,” Gu Huaiwei said, putting on a stern face.

“He hates filth. Reassign him to the backyard to clean the toilets.”

“…” *That’s ruthless,* she thought.

Lin She’s voice was like a pool of stagnant water. “If he’s unwilling, he’ll resign of his own accord.”

Gu Huaiwei nodded and walked toward the door, pretending to be serious.

Lin She kept his eyes fixed on her until she pushed the door open and left the hall. Only then did he lower his head to continue his work.

Once outside, Gu Huaiwei rubbed her stiff face.

Lin She was a bit difficult to handle.

Her first attempt had been a failure.

She decided to switch targets.

He Xueyi was currently talking to a human boy who was looking for a Pseudo-Human partner.

Gu Huaiwei quietly hid a short distance away, preparing to pull out her mirror again.

However, before she could even take it out, He Xueyi looked toward her with a radiant smile and said, “Shop Manager Miss, what are you doing hiding over there?”

“Just taking a stroll.”

The second failure had come so quickly.

Gu Huaiwei thought to herself that they didn’t usually pay this much attention to her. Why did it seem like they had coordinated beforehand today, both accurately detecting her little movements?

Had she triggered some kind of radar of theirs?

“Why stand so far away?” He Xueyi’s lips curved into a shallow smile, like an early winter ice flower blooming in a pure white world-clear and clean. “Is there something Shop Manager Miss wants to ask me? Or is there something you want to see? You can just say it. I will answer all your questions and satisfy all your curiosity.”

“I just came out to check if the weeds have been cleared.”

“Is that so? I thought Shop Manager Miss was here to make me correct my work attitude and straighten out my professional conduct.”

His gaze fell upon Gu Huaiwei. It seemed soft, yet she felt a chill emanating from it, as if a thin layer of ice had formed at its depths.

“I am very satisfied with the work here. No matter what Shop Manager Miss does to me, I will not resign of my own accord.”

His nonchalant tone and gentle eyes made Gu Huaiwei feel a bit frantic.

Even though they were separated by a door-one inside the shop and one outside-he had actually heard her!

On the surface, Gu Huaiwei had to remain calm.

There was no recording, so there was no evidence.

As the saying goes, as long as you aren’t caught red-handed, deny everything to the death.

“I came to praise you for your serious work attitude and your clean professional conduct. The customers all like you very much, and you’ve generated a lot of revenue for the Matchmaking Agency.”

“Shh-he can hear you too, you know.” He Xueyi placed a finger against his lips, interrupting Gu Huaiwei.

The “he” he referred to was Lin She.

“Shop Manager Miss is a bit greedy, wanting to hold all of us in the palm of your hand.” A smile flickered in He Xueyi’s overly exquisite eyes, making it hard for Gu Huaiwei to look away.

“However, I don’t hate it.” His voice was very soft. “Shop Manager Miss, I know what you want to see. You can come find me in the backyard tonight, and let me tell you my secrets… slowly.”
