Chapter 232

Although the Rules stated that one had to earn the Bandits’ trust and become a companion they acknowledged before going with them to the graveyard, that “trust” was extremely troublesome to obtain.

A Trial-taker had to learn what had happened to the Bandits, then have the Bandits personally hand over the Leather Drum and let the Trial-taker perform a piece as a ritual to comfort the dead. Only then would they count as the Bandits’ companion.

Bai Yuzhen actually already knew part of the story behind what had happened to the Bandits.

For the past two days, she had been trying to make contact with the Bandit Leader.

She had bribed who knew how many Miners, spent who knew how much Lifespan, and suffered plenty before finally obtaining the chance to dance just now.

Her plan had been to take it slowly.

But she had never expected Gu Huaiwei to come back and simply yank the Leather Drum out of the Bandits’ hands, then smack it a few times like it was a toy.

Still, after seeing Gu Huaiwei’s methods, Bai Yuzhen felt it would be better for her to quietly wait and let the other woman do her thing.

Gu Huaiwei struck the Leather Drum. Restricted by the Instance, the Bandits’ Head Overseer had no choice but to say something that went against his true feelings.

“Kakaka… Hearing the beat of your drum, my brothers have acknowledged you.”

“Tomorrow at two-thirty in the morning, come find me at the No. 4 Mine Tunnel. I will take you to my brothers and let them see what you look like… Kakaka…”

“Oh.” Gu Huaiwei suddenly understood. “So hitting this drum has that effect too.”

Gu Huaiwei snatched the Leather Drum back out of the Bandits’ hands again.

Then she handed it to Bai Yuzhen.

“You two hit it as well.”

The Bandits reached out with a rough, massive hand. The scar on the back of his hand began to appear, then split open.

His pitch-black gaze was vicious, and a strange, distinctive clicking sound came from his throat, the sound of an Anomaly.

“Just borrowing it. I’ll give it right back.” Gu Huaiwei could sense the black energy around the Bandit Overseer growing denser and denser.

The Bandits suddenly lunged at her.

Gu Huaiwei had been prepared. She turned sideways and swiftly avoided the Bandits’ surprise attack.

She was not annoyed, either. Instead, she deliberately twisted his meaning.

“Do you want to dance with me?”

The Bandits pounced on empty air. He wanted to stop Bai Yuzhen from striking the drum, but Gu Huaiwei grabbed both his wrists and spun him in circles on the spot.

A teasing smile hung at the corner of Gu Huaiwei’s lips. “I know you’re in a hurry, but don’t be. They’ll be done patting it in a second and give it back to you.

Come on, come on. Spin and leap, let us close our eyes~”

No matter how Gu Huaiwei dragged the Bandit Overseer around in circles, the Bandits’ head remained fixed in one direction.

He stared intently at the Leather Drum.

When Fang Zhao received the Leather Drum, he was momentarily stunned.

“What are you spacing out for? Hit it already!” Bai Yuzhen elbowed him.

“Ah, right.”

The feeling of obtaining a key item so easily made Fang Zhao feel that it was utterly unreal.

They had paid no price, made no painstaking effort to solve any riddle. Just like that, they had obtained the Leather Drum.

And all of this was because of Gu Huaiwei.

Fang Zhao’s heart trembled.

Then came a surge of uncontrollable ecstasy.

He should have trusted Bai Yuzhen’s judgment.

This Shop Manager of unknown origins was even more formidable than he had imagined.

What did the Heavenly Ranking amount to?

Someone who could directly snatch things from an Anomaly’s hands-that was what true ability looked like.

The Bandits could only watch helplessly as the Leather Drum was struck by the other Trial-takers. Then, with extreme reluctance, he opened a back door for them.

“Kakaka… Hearing your drumbeats again, my brothers have acknowledged you again.”

“Tomorrow at two-thirty in the morning, the three of you come find me at the No. 4 Mine Tunnel. I will take you to my brothers and let them see your ugly faces… Kakaka…”
Gu Huaiwei held the Leather Drum in both hands and returned it to the Bandit Overseer.

“Thanks!”

The Bandit Overseer smashed the Leather Drum with one punch and pulled an ax out from inside it.

Fear showed on Bai Yuzhen’s and Fang Zhao’s faces.

Gu Huaiwei simply stood where she was with a smile, watching to see what he planned to do next.

“Shopkeeper Gu, be careful of that ax,” Bai Yuzhen couldn’t help reminding her.

The Head Overseer locked eyes with Gu Huaiwei, and Gu Huaiwei did not look away.

She loved the way they couldn’t stand her, yet couldn’t do a thing to her.

The Anomaly could do nothing to Gu Huaiwei.

But he had ways to make things difficult for the Trial-taker.

“Kakakaka… Why should she be careful? Are you afraid of me?” The Head Overseer carried the ax and walked toward Bai Yuzhen. As long as she said one wrong word, he could chop through her fragile neck with that ax.

Bai Yuzhen quickly explained, “The ax is sharp. I was only worried about you, my lord.”

The Bandit Overseer swung the ax at Bai Yuzhen.

Bai Yuzhen’s pupils trembled, but she forced herself to remain where she was and did not run.

She couldn’t run!

As long as she didn’t run, she wouldn’t violate the Rules.

Fang Zhao kept silent under the pressure.

If he didn’t speak, he couldn’t make a mistake.

Gu Huaiwei left minor problems like these for them to solve on their own.

There was no need for her to wait until tomorrow and accompany them through the graveyard.

When the time was about right, she could simply drive over and pick them up. That would be far more efficient.

Gu Huaiwei completely ignored the Head Overseer. After giving Bai Yuzhen and the others a few instructions, she left the Mine Instance.

Fang Zhao wanted to ask her to stay, but Bai Yuzhen stopped him.

Bai Yuzhen shook her head at Fang Zhao.

She knew Gu Huaiwei could come and go as she pleased. They couldn’t stop her.

Before returning to Oasis Sanatorium, Gu Huaiwei first found an abandoned Hot Spring Mansion in town. She brought Bai Miemie along, planning to soak in the hot spring before going home.

The Hot Spring Mansion was a hotel-style mansion.

When they entered, the Instance was not yet open. There were no other humans inside, and even the Anomaly were in a quiet state, staying in their designated places and silently waiting for the Trial-taker to arrive.

The hot spring pool was on the basement level.

They had to ride a narrow slide down to reach it.

The pool water was a deep, dense crimson. Its surface was not calm; now and then, a string of bubbles would rise with a low gurgling sound.

Gu Huaiwei was worried the pool might be full of blood, and that the more she washed, the dirtier she would become.

Bai Miemie, however, wrapped herself in a bath towel and jumped in with a splash.

The bath towel had been taken from a storage cabinet nearby.

The nameplate on the cabinet was already worn down. Aside from the bath towels, there was also a bloodstained knife inside.

“Sister Gu, it feels so nice! Do you want to come down and soak for a while too?” Bai Miemie splashed the water. “I feel like my wool is getting all soft from the heat.”

Her short, curly white hair was wet with the red water, but it had not been dyed by it.

It seemed this water was not blood after all.

Or rather, before the Instance opened, this was just an ordinary red wine hot spring.

“Aaaah! Sister Gu, someone in the water is touching my little hooves!” Bai Miemie swam to the shore at lightning speed, then grabbed the clothes beside her and wrapped up her sheep hooves.

Gu Huaiwei saw a corpse float up from the hot spring.

Then another.

The bubbles in the hot spring grew larger and larger.

In just a short while, the perfectly fine red wine hot spring was covered in floating corpses.

All those corpses had the same face.

It was a girl in a school uniform.
