Chapter 272

Bai Yuzhen hurried back to Bed 4. Feeling her way through the dark, she climbed onto the bed and, according to the Rules, pulled the icy blanket over herself from head to toe, pretending to be asleep.

Gu Huaiwei, meanwhile, headed for the balcony. She pushed open the sliding door, walked to the window, and drew back the heavy blackout curtains. Then she waved at Lin She below, signaling for him to come up.

Lin She waved back at her.

He was already on the thin side, and he liked wearing black. In the dark, fog-shrouded campus, he looked even more like a long, slender stroke of ink left behind in a literati painting.

The cabinet by the dorm entrance said no one was allowed to go to the balcony, pull back the curtains, or look outside.

When Gu Huaiwei waved out the window, she noticed that every room in the Boys’ Dormitory across from them was lit up. Inside each dorm, four boys dressed in red stood neatly on their balconies, all waving toward the girls’ dorm.

With her sharp eyesight, Gu Huaiwei could see that every one of those boys wore the exact same expression.

The same formulaic smile.

The same pale faces.

Even the motions of their waving arms were identical.

It looked deeply unsettling.

“Student, why don’t you wave back at them too… ka-ka-ka…”

A chilling voice came from behind her.

A furry hand landed on Gu Huaiwei’s shoulder.

“Tch. Who said you could touch me?” Gu Huaiwei grew alert instantly. She didn’t even bother checking what was behind her. She grabbed the furry hand that had touched her without permission and flipped the thing over her shoulder, throwing it straight out the window.

The night was pitch-black.

The animal, covered all over in black fur, was hurled from the fourth floor of the girls’ dormitory by Gu Huaiwei. It hit the grass below with a loud clang, twitched twice, and then stopped moving.

Lin She didn’t hurry upstairs. He strolled over to the lump of a creature that had been thrown down, then calmly pulled out his phone and snapped a picture.

Gu Huaiwei was still watching him, so he had no way to come up.

Seeing Lin She still dawdling downstairs, Gu Huaiwei frowned slightly. She remembered how the Assistants in her shop always liked to sneak around in the dark whenever they used their own abilities.

Kind of shy, really.

So Gu Huaiwei turned and left the balcony.

It would have been fine if she hadn’t turned around.

The moment she did, she came face-to-face with the homeroom teacher.

When had the homeroom teacher gotten there?

Gu Huaiwei would swear she hadn’t heard a single sound just now.

The homeroom teacher stood blocking the doorway with a grim expression, a teaching stick in hand. Half her face was hidden in shadow, and her voice sounded blurred. “This student, what are you doing on the balcony so late at night? Why aren’t you back in bed sleeping?”

“Couldn’t sleep. Just enjoying the view.”

Gu Huaiwei acted as if nothing was wrong. The moment she finished speaking, Lin She opened the balcony window and leaped inside, coming face-to-face with the homeroom teacher.

Gu Huaiwei: “…”

No matter how she looked at it, the scene felt wrong.

Like getting caught sneaking a lover in during the middle of the night.

The smile on the homeroom teacher’s face widened. As she spoke, her entire tongue lolled out of her mouth, absurdly long, hanging down to her throat.

“A boy actually dared to enter the girls’ dormitory. Hurry and tell me-which girl’s bed is he here for? Tell me… ka-ka-ka… and I’ll let you go. I’ll even assign you a bed… heh-heh-heh… and let you patrol the dorms at night…”

“I know about you… ka-ka-ka… the whole school is talking about you now. You can stay in the Instance and work with us, stay with us. That has to be much better than staying with these stupid students…”

The homeroom teacher was waiting for Gu Huaiwei to sell out one of the students.

Under the blanket, Bai Yuzhen heard every word of their conversation and trembled uncontrollably.

She simply couldn’t read Gu Huaiwei’s heart.

Gu Huaiwei had helped her many times before, but it had always been for business or profit.

And inside an Instance, if the Anomaly offered enough in exchange, Bai Yuzhen couldn’t say for sure whether Gu Huaiwei might just sell them out on the spot.
Gu Huaiwei thought for a moment, then answered, “Bed Number 1.”

She remembered that Bed Number 1 had been empty, with only a patch of blood on it, so without hesitation, she pinned it on the student from Bed Number 1.

Hearing Gu Huaiwei’s answer, Bai Yuzhen finally relaxed.

The homeroom teacher’s attitude turned especially cold. “You already threw the student from Bed Number 1 out the balcony window just now.”

“Oh, because the Rules posted by the door say that male students aren’t allowed to secretly meet female students in the girls’ dorm. As punishment, I let her try bungee jumping without a safety rope just once. I’m sure she’ll learn her lesson, turn over a new leaf, and start over… oh no… start over as a beast.”

Judging from that furry hand alone, it definitely hadn’t looked human.

The homeroom teacher raised a hand and pointed at Lin She. “The boy must be punished too.”

“He’s from another school.”

“I have no interest in animals with excessive body hair,” Lin She said from the side in a gloomy voice, making his position clear.

But the homeroom teacher ignored Lin She.

Her real target was Gu Huaiwei.

“You want to cover for him… ka-ka-ka… then you need to be punished too.” The homeroom teacher raised the pointer in her hand high. “If you don’t obediently come with me to solitary confinement, then I’ll make the girl from Bed Number 4 clean the girls’ dorm’s shared toilet tonight.”

This Anomaly Homeroom Teacher was clever.

She knew she couldn’t do much to Gu Huaiwei, so she used Bai Yuzhen to threaten her instead.

Gu Huaiwei nodded. “Cleaning toilets is pretty good too. It’s contributing to the school, right?”

She simply didn’t care about that kind of threat.

If Gu Huaiwei had to look after every Trial-taker who entered an Instance from beginning to end, making sure they lived or died, then she might as well stop running her shop and become a full-time bodyguard instead.

Under the blanket, Bai Yuzhen trembled.

Even wrapped up in it, she couldn’t warm the ice-cold bedding.

According to the Rules, the homeroom teacher really did have that authority.

The toilet was dangerous, and there were new Rules there too.

Bai Yuzhen didn’t want to go at all.

It was nighttime dorm inspection right now, so she couldn’t make a sound.

She did her best to slow her breathing and silently prayed that Gu Huaiwei wouldn’t just leave her alone.

She was starting to regret it.

Just now, she should have agreed to help Gu Huaiwei. That would have tied their interests together, and then Gu Huaiwei definitely would have cared whether she lived or died.

A miscalculation.

The homeroom teacher’s face was icy as she prepared to leave.

Gu Huaiwei suddenly grabbed her wrist.

The homeroom teacher tried to yank her hand back, and then she heard the crack of bones popping.

That sound was one she usually only heard when she was punishing students.

And now it was coming from her own body.

The homeroom teacher discovered in horror that the Anomaly group chat had been right. This outsider really could harm even an Anomaly like her.

Gu Huaiwei, meanwhile, said with a smile, “Dear homeroom teacher, don’t leave just yet. Is your Laboratory building still short on staff? I want to work part-time in there. Can you help arrange it for me?”

The homeroom teacher lowered her head to look at her hand. “Laboratory? What Laboratory? I’ve never even heard of a nursing department.”

Seeing that Gu Huaiwei didn’t look very satisfied,

the homeroom teacher immediately added, “But… ka-ka-ka… the chemistry Laboratory is short on porters to move experimental equipment. If you need it, I can write you a recommendation letter. Go to the Infirmary and find Xiao Xu. He’ll arrange the job for you.”

“I won’t be enough on my own.” Gu Huaiwei pointed at Bai Yuzhen, who was pretending to sleep in Bed Number 4. “I want her to go with me. You don’t have any objections to that, do you?”

Fang Zhao had suffered Contamination.

And the other three weren’t nursing majors anyway.

So Gu Huaiwei still planned to take Bai Yuzhen with her.

The homeroom teacher backed away, an expression of extreme terror appearing on her face. “No. I can only pull strings for one of you. Otherwise, the principal won’t let me off… ka-ka-ka…”

“The principal?”
