Chapter 279

That damned School Doctor had done it on purpose.

After knocking over all those bottles and jars, he still covered his own eyes and, in a blatant attempt to cover it up, lamented that it was all because his eyeballs weren’t compatible.

“Ka ka ka… You stay here for now. I’m going upstairs to switch out for another pair of eyes.”

The School Doctor had set his sights on Ou Doudou’s eyes.

Earlier, Ou Doudou hadn’t dared follow the School Doctor and Gu Huaiwei, so he’d stayed behind in the main hall of the Laboratory to wait. With Gu Huaiwei there, the School Doctor hadn’t dared make a move.

But now that Gu Huaiwei had already come down to the eighth underground floor, the School Doctor wanted to go back and dig out Ou Doudou’s eyeballs.

He preferred dealing with Trial-takers who were timid as mice.

As for rough, heavy-handed Gu Huaiwei, the only thought in his head was to run.

“Hey, don’t go.”

After causing trouble, he wanted to run for it? No way it’d be that easy.

“Listen,” Gu Huaiwei said, grabbing the School Doctor before looking into the depths of the darkness. “You disturbed the principal’s dinner. He’s angrily coming this way right now.”

“S-sorry… ka ka ka… you can hide…” The School Doctor rotated his arm joints, his whole body tilting toward the elevator. In his desperation to get away, he actually disregarded his position as an Anomaly and reminded Gu Huaiwei that she could hide in the locker beside them.

“I’m not hiding yet.” Gu Huaiwei tilted her head and refused without hesitation.

The School Doctor cocked his head to one side: ?

Gu Huaiwei flashed him a sly smile. “I’m going to report you to the principal for wrecking things first.”

“!”

One of the two badly matched eyeballs in the School Doctor’s head popped right out and rolled to Gu Huaiwei’s feet.

At that moment, a damp, icy wind carrying the stench of blood blew in from the end of the Corridor. It was as if some enormous creature was slowly making its way over from the shadows in the darkness, panting heavily with each step.

“Doctor, my good leader from our brief time together, if you make a mistake, you have to take responsibility for it yourself. You’re the one who made that noise, not me. You should go say hello to the principal first and take the lead in admitting your mistake. I won’t be taking the blame for you.”

As a working adult, Gu Huaiwei absolutely would not allow a coworker to dump the trouble he’d caused onto her head.

Gu Huaiwei shoved the School Doctor straight out, then yanked Lin She along, scooped up the dog, and swiftly hid inside an iron locker, pulling the door shut behind them.

It was all done in one smooth motion.

Not long after, Gu Huaiwei heard the School Doctor begging for mercy, followed by the sound of bones shattering.

“Gulu gulu-”

The School Doctor’s head rolled out.

Then, even without a head, his limbs were still alive. They groped all over the floor for it, while the head directed the limbs back to itself.

The School Doctor ran off clutching his own head.

The panting in the darkness drew closer and closer.

The iron locker Gu Huaiwei was hiding in was very cramped. The dog was wedged between Lin She and Gu Huaiwei, and there was barely enough room to turn around. Since Gu Huaiwei wanted to peek outside through the gap at the top of the locker, she could only shove Lin She farther in.

She noticed that not only did Lin She look tall and thin, the bones in his body also seemed unusually soft. When she pushed him inward, he was especially cooperative and didn’t make a sound. He was practically the perfect employee.

Gu Huaiwei peered through the slit at the top of the iron locker toward the dark Corridor. Just then, a heat-radiating tongue licked across the gap in the locker, making the metal door creak.

Something passed in front of the locker.

Then came the sound of a locker door opening.

It seemed the principal had opened the locker next to theirs.
Then the cabinet next to hers was swept onto the floor, its metal casing splitting open and breaking into several pieces.

Only after the sounds outside had completely faded did Gu Huaiwei climb out of the cabinet.

Following the sticky trail on the ground, she walked deeper into the dark corridor.

She avoided the shattered bottles and jars littering the floor.

Gu Huaiwei moved with light, careful steps.

The Little White Dog seemed almost human in its understanding. In this kind of environment, it didn’t make a sound or run around.

Lin She walked directly over the glass, yet it made no sound beneath his feet.

He was a snake moving through the darkness.

Only those dark green eyes gave off a faint, ghostly gleam.

At the very end of the corridor was the Principal’s Office.

The office door was half open.

The principal wasn’t inside.

Gu Huaiwei slipped in sideways and began searching the office for clues.

On the desk lay a torn photograph.

In the photo, the School Doctor, who had a mouth but no eyes, stood arm in arm with the Red-clad Nurse in an intimate picture.

The two seemed to be lovers.

And the Red-clad Nurse appeared to be the principal’s daughter.

Gu Huaiwei also found many honorary titles awarded to Gray Crystal University on the office bookshelves.

Inside a cabinet were carefully clipped newspapers.

The newspapers mentioned the principal’s rise.

When he was young, the principal of Gray Crystal University had come from a poor family, but he had excellent grades. After graduating from college, he remained in Gray Mist Town and became an insignificant researcher, staying unknown for many years.

Later, he married the daughter of Gray Crystal University’s former principal and was arranged into an administrative position at Gray Crystal University.

After that, his career rose steadily, and after the old principal retired, he successfully took the position of principal.

And not long afterward, his wife also died of illness.

Leaving behind a daughter.

The relationship between father and daughter was poor.

The principal hoped his daughter would go into administration, but after watching her mother die of Mist Lung Disease right in front of her, the principal’s daughter was heartbroken and wanted even more to pursue medicine.

The two argued over this without end.

The opportunity for reconciliation came when the current principal met with the Black-hearted Merchant.

“Gray Crystal University formally accepts a charitable businessman’s donation and establishes a Laboratory, with the principal taking the lead in the latest experimental activities.”

It was as if the principal had rediscovered the ideals of his youth and began advancing the construction of the campus Laboratory.

And in every experimental project, he put his own name first.

Because of that, he gained many titles.

“Not long after this man rose to power, his father-in-law disappeared. Not long after that, his wife also died of illness…” Lin She’s long, distinct fingers brushed across the newspaper ink. “Miss Gu, take a look at this photo. The huge piece of Gray Crystal ore hanging around his wife’s neck… it’s hard to say whether this man did it on purpose.”

Gray Crystal ore could trigger Mist Lung Disease.

Sitting on the desk, Gu Huaiwei held the other two newspapers and said lightly, “Whether he did it on purpose or not, the current principal is definitely a clever man who knows how to leverage others.

From a small-town test-taking prodigy to principal in such a short time. He worked as a researcher for so many years without producing any real results, but after becoming principal, he used his position to seize the students’ experimental achievements for himself and cloak himself in honors… Ah, no wonder he drove so many students in the Laboratory Building to jump to their deaths.”

At that moment, the Little White Dog suddenly started barking madly at the doorway.

The principal seemed to have returned.
