Dimensional Store: Welcome to the Apocalypse Apartment - chapter 93
Unfortunately, the high-speed rail was moving too fast. Gu Huaiwei didn’t see who the one survivor was.
Karl found Xiao Ai in a standard carriage, unconscious from poisoning.
There was no antidote for Radiation Frog Poison on the train.
Radiation Frog Poison could numb a person’s nerves, but it wouldn’t kill.
Karl told Gu Huaiwei that there was a small market near Falling Star Harbor, and there was a chance they could buy a detox agent there. When they arrived, they could get off and look for medicine.
After two days on the rails, the high-speed train reached Falling Star Harbor.
Falling Star Harbor sat right on the border between the Upper District and the Middle District, jointly administered by both.
Gu Huaiwei could see countless massive ships docked in the harbor. The skyline was slashed by the masts and crane arms of gigantic cargo vessels-eerie and magnificent.
A sea of black quicksand rolled in hidden undercurrents, sand-waves churning in the dark.
There were more passengers at this stop, and the high-speed rail would remain here for half an hour.
Gu Huaiwei and Karl parted ways here.
Before leaving, Karl helped Gu Huaiwei get the Radiation Frog antidote back.
He didn’t take a single Gold Coin from her. A grown man, standing there with reddened eyes.
“Go on, go on.” Gu Huaiwei waved at Karl.
Karl’s voice caught. “I heard you might be leaving the Oasis Hotel for good.”
Logically, even if Gu Huaiwei stayed in the Upper District, they would still have chances to meet again.
But Karl still felt a little heartbroken.
“Mm.” Gu Huaiwei didn’t deny it.
To the people in this little plane, Gu Huaiwei always arrived and left without an ending.
From the moment she appeared, it was already decided she would depart.
“Before you go, I want to hold a farewell dinner for you.”
“Sure. After the mission’s over-if I can make it back to the hotel in time-I’ll come.”
Karl was usually thick-skinned and careless, but today, for some reason, he kept feeling his right eyelid twitching. He couldn’t help nagging Gu Huaiwei a few more times to be careful.
Gu Huaiwei acted the same as always.
She never went out of her way to explain anything.
Even partings, to her, were nothing more than an ordinary day among the thirty thousand days of a lifetime.
After Xiao Ai took the detox agent, the numbness throughout her body eased.
The moment she opened her eyes, she grabbed Gu Huaiwei with a twisted expression. “Someone’s trying to hurt you! They’re hiding in the other carriages!”
“Don’t worry. I already threw them off the train,” Gu Huaiwei said gently, soothing her.
“So fast?” Xiao Ai froze. Remembering the ambush, she ground her teeth in hatred. “They weren’t weak. Together they killed the two bodyguard uncles you brought. If my physique weren’t special and I hadn’t forced myself to run, I probably wouldn’t be seeing you now.”
Gu Huaiwei briefly told Xiao Ai what happened afterward, and only then did Xiao Ai finally relax.
“You just got the poison cleared. Rest,” Gu Huaiwei said. She took out a blanket from her Jade Bracelet and draped it over her.
The soft touch made Xiao Ai think of Gu Changge again.
Xiao Ai liked looking at Gu Huaiwei from behind, but she didn’t really like looking at her face.
Because when she saw her back, she could imagine the person she wanted to see.
But when she saw her face, reality yanked her awake.
The high-speed rail plunged into the black-sea of flowing sand, piercing straight through the entire expanse. Like a swimming flood dragon, it carved a silver-white line across the black seabed.
After all these years, the transportation routes controlled by the Upper District’s elites had been punched clean through.
Once the train entered the Upper District’s territory, it traveled underground the whole way.
At Neon Nest Station, a huge number of passengers got off.
Gu Huaiwei saw a world completely different from the Radiation Zone aboveground.
Here, music and dance filled the air, neon and liquor drowned the senses. Multicolored billboards flashed and flickered, painting the underground world into something dazzlingly bizarre.
Every entrance to the high-speed rail station was under strict guard by armed Mercenary. They might not be able to damage the train, but they would shoot dead anyone without an Upper District ticket right at the station doors.
Gu Huaiwei didn’t get off at Neon Nest.
The high-speed rail kept moving.
Next stop: First District, Black Spiral Research Institute.
When the trip ended, Gu Huaiwei got off. She didn’t exit from the closest door near business class. Instead, she cut across the entire train to the rear cars, then went up to the front to pay the fine for damaging a robot earlier, and only then disembarked.
By the time they reached Black Spiral Research Institute Station, there were no other passengers left on the train.
Passing the adjacent car, Gu Huaiwei saw only a gray-haired old woman-alone, head bowed as she slept, utterly motionless.
The next stop after Black Spiral Research Institute was the terminal station, called Silver Snow Plains.
Gu felt the old woman was kind of weird-like something out of an urban creepypasta-so she took a couple more looks.
Nominally, this trip was Gu Huaiwei representing Oasis Hotel to run a marketing event at First District Entertainment City.
So the moment she stepped off the train, she was met with a warm, enthusiastic welcome.
The booth had already been set up, and a female celebrity hired for a hefty price was showing off her voice.
After exchanging pleasantries with the event lead, Gu Huaiwei went up on stage to deliver her pitch. She played a few ads made by Lin She and promoted Oasis Hotel’s membership card campaign.
Once the formalities were over, Xiao Ai stayed behind to cover for Gu Huaiwei and handle the celebrity and the event lead.
Gu Huaiwei, meanwhile, successfully slipped away and headed to the Black Spiral Research Institute with He Xueyi.
The Spiral Research Institute had recently been hosting a series of academic lectures.
They’d invited several prominent figures from different districts.
Gu Huaiwei and He Xueyi staked out the area, knocked out two attendees, kicked them out of their car, stripped them of their clothes, took their authentication cards, then tied them up with hemp rope and stuffed them into the trunk.
He Xueyi lamented how violence was bad, even as his hands moved quicker and cleaner than anyone’s.
And whenever Gu Huaiwei did something bad, the corner of her lips would lift without her noticing; behind her lenses, her eyes were brighter than usual, practically sparkling with energy.
Partners in crime.
“I don’t like the smell other people leave behind,” He Xueyi frowned slightly, his tone full of disgust. “Miss Manager, I’m only wearing clothes someone else has worn because it’s for you. If it were Lin She, he’d never compromise like this.”
“Lin She isn’t a clean freak,” Gu Huaiwei said, making him wear whatever she told him to.
He Xueyi muttered under his breath, “Something that likes rooting around in the mud obviously wouldn’t be.”
“What?” It was too quiet-Gu Huaiwei didn’t catch it.
He Xueyi put on that harmless, gentle smile again. “I said I do care about my image. After all, my image represents the hotel’s face. Lin She does tech-he wears black all day, sits in dark corners tapping away at a computer. No one’s looking at him. He’s fine like that.”
It reminded Gu Huaiwei that she’d bought Lin She plenty of clothes before-some were random 9.9-with-free-shipping buys, some were from brand stores, a whole mishmash. But he didn’t look at brands; he only looked at the color.
Lin She liked plain, mostly black-and-white basics.
Even when he chose patterns, it would only be simple checks and lines. He had real talent for design, but he didn’t care much about how he dressed.
Nothing like He Xueyi-who could make a single shade of white look like endless different styles.
