Gu Huaiwei leaned back in the sofa chair and shifted the spearpoint toward Tang Wushuang. “Who’s backing you?”

Tang Wushuang’s face was cold. She didn’t say a word, lips sealed tight-clearly with no intention of giving up even a single syllable.

If Gu Huaiwei had any experience with interrogations, she would have noticed that the moment Tang Wushuang was captured, she’d already prepared herself to die.

Her eyes were already dead.

But Gu Huaiwei had grown up in peacetime and seen too little. She still needed tempering before she could understand the rules for surviving in a brutal world.

As she waited, Gu Huaiwei’s patience gradually ran out. She drew a pitch-black dagger from her sleeve, her fingertips lightly sliding along the blade.

She turned her head, her voice carrying a sinister chill.

“Miss Tang, every five minutes you stay silent, I’ll cut off one of your fingers. When I run out of fingers, I’ll move on to toes. When I run out of toes, I’ll start slicing your tendons-hands and feet.

“Tell me honestly, and I can spare your life. Cooperate a little. You don’t want me to make this too bloody.”

She’d picked lines like that up from TV dramas.

And she found she rather liked the feeling of playing the villain.

Tang Wushuang remained silent, her face not showing the slightest change.

Gu Huaiwei kept persuading her, voice slow and even. “Honestly, for someone working for a paycheck, there’s no need to wreck your own body over a job. In a situation like this, talking is just self-preservation. Your boss ought to understand that.”

Still no answer.

Tang Wushuang’s expression stayed numb, unmoved.

Five minutes passed quickly.

Gu Huaiwei weighed the dagger in her palm. She looked calm and breezy, but deep down she still carried a heavy psychological burden.

But she’d already said the threat. She had to push herself through it.

When it came to people who wanted to harm her, she didn’t need to hold herself to such high moral standards.

So Gu Huaiwei stepped forward, yanked Tang Wushuang’s hand over with a hard grip, pinned it to the floor, and aimed the cold blade at her pinky.

Head tilted, she searched Tang Wushuang’s face for even a hint of wavering. “If you don’t talk, I’m really going to do it.”

Unfortunately, the result disappointed her.

Tang Wushuang let out a cold laugh, thick with contempt. “Do you know how people in our line of work tell what kind of person they’re dealing with?”

Gu Huaiwei paused with the knife, genuinely curious. “How?”

“By instinct.” Tang Wushuang’s voice didn’t rise or fall. “You’ve never done anything like this. You’re a flower raised in a greenhouse. Even if you imitate how people like us talk, you’ll never grasp the core of it.”

People who talked tough but went soft when it mattered-Tang Wushuang had seen plenty. She thought Gu Huaiwei was exactly that type.

Karl stood to the side. Seeing Gu Huaiwei hesitate, he offered, “Miss Gu, would you like us to do it for you?”

Hearing Karl, Tang Wushuang grew even more disdainful, lifting her chin. “Yeah. Let that pack of dogs following you do it for you.” They were people who had fought their way through blood and storm, and they took immense pride in their battle-hardened hearts.

Lu Ziyi watched from the side, a little distracted. She thought of the sunken hole in her younger brother’s head and felt Tang Wushuang’s provocation was extremely unwise.

“No. I’ll do it myself.” Gu Huaiwei’s eyes hardened, and the dagger came down in a flash.

A glint of steel-followed by Tang Wushuang sucking in a sharp breath.

“Don’t judge by appearances. You’ll regret it.” Gu Huaiwei tossed the severed finger onto the ground. “Now can you talk?”

“Dream on.” Tang Wushuang closed her eyes.

Once the first cut was made, everything that followed became much easier.
Tang Wushuang not only refused to talk-she didn’t even make a sound.

She clenched her teeth and took it head-on.

By the time Gu Huaiwei moved to the third finger, her breathing had sped up a little. The sticky, clinging sensation of blood splattering onto her hand made her deeply uncomfortable.

Interrogation wasn’t the same as fighting.

In a fight, there was that evenly matched thrill-back and forth, trading blows.

But interrogation was just suppressing someone who couldn’t fight back. Gu Huaiwei didn’t like it.

“If you do it like this, she won’t talk.”

“Then how am I supposed to do it?” Gu Huaiwei flicked the blood off her hand.

He Xueyi walked up to her. Through a damp cloth, he slid the knife out of her grip, set it on the table beside them, then pulled out a fresh wet wipe and carefully cleaned Gu Huaiwei’s fingers.

“I can wipe my own hands.” Gu Huaiwei hadn’t gotten what she wanted, and she was in a foul mood.

“Let me.” His movements were meticulous-he even wiped the blood out from between her fingers.

“Pain alone isn’t enough. You have to make her feel fear.

“Interrogation is an art, too. You don’t need to do everything yourself-leave it to someone who’s good at it.”

Gu Huaiwei looked at her now-clean fingers. “Can you do it? Teach me next time.”

He Xueyi’s golden eyes were clear as the morning sun. His lips parted slightly, his expression wounded as he accused her of misunderstanding him.

“I’m the peace-loving type. How could I do something this bloody? When you get the chance to visit my hometown, I’ll introduce you to someone who’s good at that sort of thing.”

“…” Gu Huaiwei glanced at Fang Weixing-trees had sprouted out of his mouth, and he was practically no longer breathing-and found He Xueyi’s words not very convincing.

Karl rubbed the stubble on his chin. “Miss Gu, this man and woman were trained in the Upper District specifically as assassins. They’ve killed more people than they can count. They’ve long since stopped caring about life and death. It’s normal you can’t get anything out of them.”

“Mm. If we can’t get anything out of them, then throw them off the train.” Gu Huaiwei didn’t dwell on it.

She wasn’t the type to spiral in her own head.

The Upper District couldn’t touch the Oasis Hotel. All she needed was her sister’s things and to get out of this world. Everything else didn’t matter.

Fang Weixing didn’t hold on for long before he stopped breathing. A cleaning robot dragged him away.

The high-speed train arrived at Cleft Ridge Valley. The place was savage wasteland-mountains that used to be gold mines had been hollowed out, with only a handful of prospectors still wandering around.

The living conditions were brutally harsh.

Gu Huaiwei dumped Lu Ziyi and Tang Wushuang here, smashed their identity authentication systems, and left them with only a gun-loaded with a single bullet.

Before she left, Gu Huaiwei smiled at Lu Ziyi. “Darling, third time’s the limit. Treasure your life. I’m heading to the Upper District. If you hurry and manage to crawl back up one more time, I’ll be looking forward to our third meeting.”

If there really was a third failure, Gu Huaiwei would have had her fun.

She would kill her.

Wind and sand whipped up Lu Ziyi’s long hair. At her feet lay a Radiation Frog Gu Huaiwei had stabbed to death. Lu Ziyi stared at Gu Huaiwei expressionlessly, impossible to read.

Keep tangling with her.

Or stop while she still could.

Gu Huaiwei hoped Lu Ziyi would bring her a new act.

The high-speed train pulled away. Gu Huaiwei tossed the gun out the window.

In the barren desert, Lu Ziyi and Tang Wushuang immediately began fighting over it.

There was no food in Cleft Ridge Valley. The dead became rations for the living.

A gunshot cracked behind them.

Someone fell.
