Feed Me, Husband - Chapter 77
Chapter 77
“Sister Gu, you really helped me out by swapping shifts last time. Whenever you want a day off, just let me know and I’ll cover for you.”
In the library staff office, the woman who had asked Gu Xiaonuan for help last time walked over with a smile.
Gu Xiaonuan was originally going to say it wasn’t necessary, but then she remembered Lu Yichen’s words: “Teacher Gu, how about you come to the university to find me on a day you’re not working?”
Tomorrow was Thursday, and the students all had classes. If she went to find him then, she would likely be seen by many people.
“Tomorrow, if that’s okay?”
Gu Xiaonuan replied, and her colleague quickly nodded with a smile. “Of course, no problem! I’ll cover your shift tomorrow then.”
Gu Xiaonuan said thank you, changed her clothes, and prepared to leave.
“Sister Gu!”
She turned back and looked at her colleague. “Is there something else?”
“It’s been so many years… have you really not considered finding someone else?” the colleague started. “I don’t mean that being single is bad, but I know you don’t have children, and being all alone… having to do everything yourself, don’t you ever feel overwhelmed?”
Gu Xiaonuan was stunned. She had never imagined that one day she would be the object of a human’s concern.
“The fact that you aren’t looking suggests you haven’t moved on. Emotionally… must it be very painful? You’ve always been a loner, but you’re a truly good person. If you ever have any difficulties, you must tell us.”
Listening to her, Gu Xiaonuan vaguely understood that this was a gesture of goodwill.
But she was a vampire. Getting too close to humans never ended well.
Especially when complex emotions were involved-whether friendship, family, or love-she was always the one left behind in the end.
“Thank you, but I’m fine on my own for now,” Gu Xiaonuan said, turning to push the door open and leave. She had been in this city for five years and had started this job during her first year.
Initially, her cold attitude had caused those around her to keep their distance. This had made her feel at ease, which was exactly the effect she had wanted.
She didn’t consider herself a ‘good person’ as the woman had said. The help she provided was far too trivial for a vampire.
When she returned home, Lu Yichen hadn’t come back yet. He seemed to have a heavy workload lately and had been returning very late.
Gu Xiaonuan thought about the times she had heard the door open over the past few days; she hadn’t smelled the scent of him cooking dinner either.
After hanging a bag of food on his doorknob, Gu Xiaonuan curled back into her sofa.
A variety show was playing on the TV. The celebrities were working hard to create comedic moments. Gu Xiaonuan watched blankly. *Is it really that funny?*
Before she knew it, it was 9:00 PM, and familiar footsteps sounded outside. Curled on the sofa, Gu Xiaonuan’s ears twitched slightly. He was back.
There was a knock on the door. Gu Xiaonuan looked up, and in the next second, she had moved to the door.
“Thank you for the feeding, Teacher Gu.” Outside, a handsome smile hung on his face, but Gu Xiaonuan could see the fatigue he couldn’t hide.
“I haven’t had the energy to make dinner lately, so this is a godsend.”
Lu Yichen laughed as he opened his door. “I’ll take it then.”
Just as he was about to go inside with the bag of food, Gu Xiaonuan spoke up. “I’m free tomorrow. I’ll go to the university to find you. Let me know what time works for you.”
“Tomorrow… I’m covering a large lecture for my supervisor in the morning.” He looked at Gu Xiaonuan. “If it’s convenient for Teacher Gu, why don’t you come and listen to the class I’m teaching? You could even point out any areas where I’m lacking.”
Gu Xiaonuan thought for a moment. “Okay. What time and which classroom?”
“It’s a general lecture for the History Department, in the second-floor auditorium of the Literature and History Building. You can just walk right in, Teacher Gu.” Lu Yichen let out a yawn and gave the bag in his hand a slight shake.
“I’ll make sure to eat it all. Goodnight.”
Gu Xiaonuan curled back onto the sofa, hugging her knees as she continued watching the variety show. Thinking about Lu Yichen teaching the class tomorrow, she took out her phone and browsed the Forum.
Sure enough, the news had been posted. Within a short time, the thread had already reached over 200 replies.
“I really want to go audit the class!”
“I regret not choosing the History Department! To have such a handsome senior!”
“With a substitute teacher like that, I’d never skip class again.”
“I’m so jealous of the History Department students. Please take lots of photos, don’t keep all that eye candy to yourselves!”
“You guys can go audit as a group. Just sit in the back. The auditorium is huge, and our History Department doesn’t even have that many students.”
“Yeah, every time there’s a big lecture, the back few rows are always empty.”
“Wow, really? Then I’m definitely going!”
Gu Xiaonuan finished reading all the comments, walked into her bedroom, and collapsed onto her bed. It looked like she would have to head over early tomorrow, or she wouldn’t be able to snag a seat at all.
On the third day, Gu Xiaonuan looked at herself in the mirror.
Long denim pants and a short-sleeved T-shirt-the small face in the mirror was her original appearance without her glasses. She thought about it for a moment; she still needed to make the difference somewhat obvious.
Wearing light makeup and simple clothes, her soft, slightly lustrous black hair draped behind her back as she stepped out the door.
On the way, some people couldn’t help but turn their heads to look at her.
On the subway, several good-looking men came up to start a conversation, but most were warded off by Gu Xiaonuan’s icy aura.
She was like an ice-cold beauty, yet even colder than that.
“Who is that? She’s so pretty.”
As she walked through the all-too-familiar school gates, the students who saw her couldn’t help but turn their heads one after another.
“It’s unlikely a beauty like that wouldn’t leave an impression. She’s probably not from our school.”
“I think so too. She’s probably here to find someone. Is she from the arts college?”
“To be honest, she’s way prettier than a lot of celebrities, and her vibe is so cold.”
“Hey, hey, hey! Look at her back. Doesn’t she look like… that girlfriend of Lu Yichen from the History Department, the one in the leaked photos?”
“She really does! Could it be her?”
Gu Xiaonuan heard the voices and couldn’t help but feel a sense of relief. Good, the desired effect had been achieved.
Several people watching her from behind immediately pulled out their phones to snap a picture. Upon comparison, they felt more and more that it was the same person.
“Holy crap, it really is the girlfriend. Is she here to see her boyfriend?”
When Gu Xiaonuan reached the lecture hall on the second floor, there were already quite a few students inside. She walked directly from the front door to the very last row and sat down.
Lowering her head, she started looking at her phone.
As the start of class approached, more and more students filed in. Gu Xiaonuan didn’t look up, but all sorts of voices drifted clearly to her ears.
“If Senior Lu kept subbing for classes, I could break into the top of the grade.”
“Damn, I see so many people who used to skip class. They’re actually all here.”
“Senior Lu’s charm is just too great. I came late and couldn’t even grab a seat in the front!”
Soon, two-thirds of the seats in the entire lecture hall were filled. Some of the back rows were also occupied by students from other departments who had come to audit the class.
There were girls as well as boys.
“Excuse me, can I sit here?” A very pleasant voice drifted over. Gu Xiaonuan gave a hum of affirmation without even looking up.
A figure carrying a faint scent of oranges sat down. He was wearing an electronic watch on his wrist.
“Are you here to audit the class too?” the person beside her asked softly with a smile. “Or are you also here to see Lu Yichen?”
Gu Xiaonuan raised an eyebrow and turned her head slightly to look at him. He had very comfortable features; they weren’t particularly striking on their own, nor did they have the same impact as Lu Yichen’s.
It was the kind of face that looked better the more you saw it, and his entire aura made people feel comfortable being near him.
When the boy saw her look up at him, he couldn’t help but be stunned by the face before him.
His face flushed instantly. “You… you’re so pretty.”
Gu Xiaonuan said a quick thank you. He didn’t seem to need an answer to his previous question anymore as her eyes returned to her phone.
A few minutes before class began, the lecture hall was completely full. The students’ constant chatter filled the air, but Gu Xiaonuan kept her head down the entire time, surrounded by an aura that practically screamed ‘don’t talk to me.’
The handsome young man sitting next to her wanted to speak several times, but in the end, he said nothing.
The bell rang, and a stir went through the students as a figure pushed open the door and walked in.
A tall, handsome figure-Lu Yichen’s hair was slightly tousled, and he wore glasses. Perhaps because he was substitute teaching, he was dressed more formally.
Casual dress pants and a white shirt with the buttons fastened neatly made him look quite old-fashioned and serious.
Walking up to the podium, he lifted his gaze. With just one look, he spotted Gu Xiaonuan sitting in the back.
Seeing the boy sitting next to her, his thin lips curled up slightly as he gently picked up the microphone on the podium. “The student in the very last row, please don’t stare too much at someone else’s girlfriend.”
As soon as those words were spoken, all the students turned to look back. Who? Who was he talking about?
The boy sitting next to Gu Xiaonuan turned around and looked at Lu Yichen on the podium. Those smiling eyes were fixed right on him. In that instant, the boy felt like a rabbit that had been targeted by a wolf.
