Ginseng's Path to Immortality - Chapter 7
Chapter 7
That evening, Huo Langxing heard about what had happened during the day and laughed heartily.
“Shen Shen, you did well. I have no intention of forming a marriage alliance with the City Lord, nor will I marry his daughter. In the future, if anyone makes you unhappy, feel free to strike back without hesitation!”
I sighed. It wasn’t that I disliked her; I had already expressed my affection for her using the highest form of etiquette.
But before I could speak, I noticed a dark shadow looming over Huo Langxing’s brow.
He was facing a fatal calamity.
Panic seized me instantly, and I grabbed his hand. “What are you planning to do over the next few days?”
Huo Langxing’s smile faded. “Shen Shen, have you heard something? Don’t worry, I’ll be fine.”
I shook my head. “No. If you go through with this, something will definitely happen to you. Can you just… not go?”
Huo Langxing sighed and began to explain.
“Shen Shen, I must go.”
“City Lord Jiang of Linjiang City has been slaughtering Spirit Beasts to refine an Evil Drug. He uses this medicine to turn people into monsters-beings that are neither human nor ghost.”
“He sent assassins after me back then because I discovered his secret.”
“My return this time was under the guise of cooperating with him, just to make him lower his guard.”
“Tomorrow night, he plans to dump the Evil Drug into the Water Source Area of Linxian City. When that happens, all the citizens of Linxian City will become his puppets, and the city will turn into a city of ghosts.”
“So, I must strike first tomorrow night. For the sake of all Linxian City, I have to do this.”
I remained silent for a long while before finally speaking. “So, saving Linxian City is your wish?”
Huo Langxing nodded and led me up to the attic, where we could look out over all of Linzhou City.
“Shen Shen, every light you see represents a household.”
“The children who share candy with you, the old woman who helps you mend your clothes-they are all down there.”
“Shen Shen, I know this mission is dangerous. When I move out tomorrow night, I’ll have you sent away first.”
I refused his offer to have me escorted out of the city.
“If you succeed, I will be safe. If you fail, I won’t be spared even if I leave the city.”
Huo Langxing thought my reasoning made sense, so he didn’t insist.
However, before he left, he pulled me into a tight embrace.
“Shen Shen, wait for my return, and then I will marry you.”
Huo Langxing’s embrace was very warm, as comfortable as being buried in rich soil.
I let out a muffled sound against his chest. “Marry me? Why do you want to marry me?”
“Because I love you.”
Huo Langxing’s voice was steady and firm, his tone incredibly earnest.
For some reason, my chest felt tight and heavy.
“Shen Shen, wait for me.”
Huo Langxing turned and departed.
I stood there, sighing silently. I knew he wouldn’t be coming back, yet I couldn’t stop him.
Tomorrow night, he was destined to fail, and Linxian City would still become a city of ghosts.
As if to confirm my thoughts, thunder rolled across the sky above Linxian City. Despite it being broad daylight, the sky turned pitch black, yet not a single drop of rain fell.
“What ghastly weather. Even the heavens know there’s a big villain in Linxian City~”
Hearing the familiar voice, I was a bit surprised.
“Xiao Bai? Aren’t you terrified of Linxian City?”
