Chapter 12

As the twilight deepened, Xu Luo arrived.

She leaned down, intending to embrace me, but Yuan Yuan stepped in the way to block her.

Xu Luo let out a resentful, mocking huff.

“Xu Luo, I am warning you for the last time-stop!” I stared at her. “I don’t need your self-righteous kindness.”

Xu Luo avoided my gaze.

Her voice was soft but firm. “But I want the moon to hang high in the sky forever.”

She stepped closer and covered my eyes with gauze. “Sister, thank you for being willing to truly see me as a sister. You have no idea how much that means to me.”

“In this second life, someone finally loves me.”

Her tears fell onto my face.

I felt a desperate, sharp pain radiating from my arm. That was where my original Immortal Bone had been.

Back then, when the spiritual energy of the earth veins erupted, it had indiscriminately slaughtered both the Demon Lord and me; my body had long since been shattered into pieces. Yuan Yuan must have gone to great lengths to piece together a complete skeleton for me.

However, he couldn’t replicate the Immortal Bone that had already been used as a sacrificial offering.

Without an Immortal Bone, it would be impossible for me to ever reach my former realm again.

I didn’t care. Being able to survive was already a great stroke of luck; for the rest, I would simply do my best and leave it to fate.

But Xu Luo…

“Sister, they said the aptitude of my Sword Bone is very similar to yours. But I don’t like practicing the sword.” Xu Luo pressed her cheek against mine. “It will definitely suit you better.”

“Don’t cry, Sister. You’ll protect me from now on, right?”

I closed my eyes, feeling powerless as her Immortal Bone gradually merged into my body.

It was an Immortal Bone to help me ascend the Great Dao, but it was also a shackle of gloomy love.

When I met Yuan Yuan again and saw his murderous intent toward Xu Luo, I realized he hadn’t been raising her as a stand-in lover.

He protected her physical body, gifted her Heavenly Spirit Earthly Treasures to escape danger, and helped her build a reputation, yet he never taught her cultivation and didn’t care about her future or prospects.

All he wanted was a vessel that would allow Xu Zhi to return legitimately.

I don’t know when he developed such thoughts. How was such behavior any different from a Demon Cultivator performing Soul Seizure on another?

Yet, in all the world, I was the only one who had no right to condemn him.

I could only take Xu Luo and avoid him for the time being, waiting until I had enough strength to protect her before resolving the matter.

But clearly, my dear sister wasn’t as well-behaved and obedient as she appeared on the surface.

Without my knowledge, she had reached out to Yuan Yuan on her own.

Having lost her Immortal Bone, Xu Luo lay weak on the couch for several days. I looked after her with a cold expression.

Yuan Yuan followed behind me like a little tail. Seeing me bringing her medicine and water, he frowned. “Senior Sister, she is my disciple. Let me do it.”

He snatched the bowl from my hand.

Xu Luo immediately gagged. “*Yue!*”

“I don’t want him! Elder Sister, Elder Sister, let’s just leave, okay?” She looked at me with doe-like eyes.

I glanced at Yuan Yuan. He lowered his head and spoke with reluctant haste: “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have tried to raise you as a vessel for Senior Sister.”

“Oh, trying to whitewash the fact that you were raising a stand-in for yourself? I’m not buying it,” Xu Luo sneered.

“Believe it or not,” Yuan Yuan sneered back.

Xu Luo turned her head. “Sister, trust a man and you’ll be miserable for a lifetime.”

“Mhm. Trust a sister and you get backstabbed too,” I said flatly as I stood up.

Xu Luo: “…”

Yuan Yuan looked on gloatingly.

Afterward, I officially apologized to Yuan Yuan: “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have kept it from you back then, and I certainly shouldn’t have left that Contract Dissolution Document.”

Yuan Yuan said, “But if you had to do it all over again, Senior Sister, you would still do the same thing.”

I was speechless.

It was true. Back then, we were the leaders of our respective sects; if we had all fallen at once, it would have surely caused chaos. The Immortal Cultivators could not afford to lose Yuan Yuan as well.

Yuan Yuan gave a lighthearted smile. “It’s fine. I forgave Senior Sister long ago.”

“For the first hundred years, I truly hated you. But a thousand years is too long-so long that as long as Senior Sister can speak one more word to me, I will have no regrets or resentment.”

It would be a lie to say I wasn’t moved. Just as the atmosphere was perfect, Xu Luo suddenly popped out from some corner.

“AAA Love-Brain Boy Recycler.”

Me: ?

The wind and snow on Qixue Peak had stopped, and the four seasons began to rotate normally again.

As the saying goes, ‘The duck is the first to know when the spring river warms.’ Xu Luo was as noisy as five hundred ducks, and with Yuan Yuan added to the mix, it felt like a thousand.

Even though the misunderstanding had been cleared up, these two started bickering the moment they met; they were completely incompatible.

When I was practicing my sword, Xu Luo was arguing with Yuan Yuan.

When I was meditating, Xu Luo was arguing with Yuan Yuan.

When I was brewing medicine, Xu Luo was arguing with Yuan Yuan.

Finally, I reached my limit. “Get out.”

My former Lifebound Sword, after discovering that Xu Luo had completely abandoned the way of the sword, tried to return to the embrace of its old flame, surreptitiously rubbing against me to vie for my favor.

I gave a fake smile. “You get out too.”

You’re the thing I resent the most. You’d better have some self-awareness and crawl back to your Sword Tomb, thank you very much.

I owe Yuan Yuan and I owe Xu Luo; having this tangled mess with these two is my retribution. But I don’t owe you anything.

The sword trembled and took itself into exile in the Lotus Pond to dig mud and plant lotuses.

Once Xu Luo’s health had improved, I saw that she truly disliked sword practice, so I urged her to travel more and find her own Dao.

She said, “Yay! Sister, come with me! We haven’t been back to that Small Village in so long!”

I agreed.

But when it was time to officially set out, the Immortal Venerable, who was neglecting his duties every day, followed behind us with grand swagger.

Xu Luo: *Shit.*

Even more ‘shit’ than her mood were the gossiping members of the Immortal Crowd, who had recently learned that the Immortal Venerable had raised a little disciple as a stand-in.

Along the way, the looks the immortals gave the three of us were full of shock.

Some bold ones whispered, “As expected of the Immortal Venerable.”

However, after discovering that both Xu Luo and Yuan Yuan were showing off and acting spoiled toward me every day, the public opinion quietly shifted to: “As expected of Sword Immortal Xu Zhi.”

Me: …

I don’t particularly want to be famous across the Nine Provinces in this way, thank you.
