His White Moonlight Doesn't Want to Die - Chapter 1
Chapter 1
Shen Yan’s kick was probably going to leave my ass bruised for three days.
The culprit was still glaring at me, his face livid.
The kick I had just returned had drained every last bit of strength I had.
Dizzy and seeing stars, I braced myself against the edge of the bed and tried to catch my breath.
“What the hell was that thing? Is it Halloween?”
“Wait, no. Isn’t it summer? Is the school doing some kind of costume event?”
Before Shen Yan could answer, the bullet screen in front of me did it for him.
[The apocalypse is here, bro, and you’re still thinking about Halloween?]
[What kind of makeup can paint away half a person’s head?]
[The male lead’s face has gone white with rage.]
[So heartless. The male lead risked his life to come save him, and not only does he not say thanks, he actually dares to kick him back.]
[Can’t be helped. This guy is the male lead’s early-stage white moonlight, after all.]
The apocalypse?
White moonlight?
Holy shit!!
Shen Yan’s expression, which had looked like he was staring at an idiot, suddenly froze. He raised a hand, pinched my face, and shook it back and forth.
“Ye Heng, what’s wrong with you? Did that kick make you stupid?”
I slapped his hand away.
“You’re the stupid one.”
He looked up at the air.
“Then why do your eyes keep rolling upward?”
I clicked my tongue and didn’t tell him I could see strange words spinning over my head.
After all, I still didn’t know whether what they said was true.
I sighed and patted his arm.
“Anyway, thank you for saving me.”
“Though I can’t say I approve of your methods.”
The sounds outside rose and fell one after another: chaotic footsteps, objects crashing, wails, and screams.
Only belatedly did they register in my mind.
My chest tightened. I hurried to the balcony and looked down.
The ground below was a scene of utter chaos. Severed limbs and mangled bodies were everywhere, and blood had stained the pavement black.
From the floors above and below, living people and dead ones kept falling.
Each body hit the concrete with a dull, heavy thud.
A chill ran through me. I couldn’t hold back a few dry heaves, and it felt like needles were stabbing through my skull.
A warm hand covered my forehead from behind, blocking my eyes at the same time.
Shen Yan stood beside me, his tall frame shielding the balcony and enveloping me in his shadow.
“Do you have a fever? Then stop looking. Go back and lie down.”
He helped me back to the bed.
With a bitter smile, I said, “Why did you run here to get yourself killed? I can barely take two steps right now. I’ll only drag you down. Besides, isn’t your dorm downstairs? Why are you here?”
Shen Yan fell silent.
The bullet screen came alive.
[Because he likes you, you block of wood.]
[Kind of a shame. Ye Heng never knew Shen Yan liked him, not even up to his death. He thought they were mortal enemies.]
[Discussion: What do you do when the person you like keeps thinking you’re trying to hurt him?]
[When does Ye Heng die? I can’t wait for Shen Yan to turn into a cold, brutal war machine after his white moonlight dies.]
[Cherish the male lead while he still has some humanity left.]
[There’s a substitute-love storyline later, too. Our adorable little shou will appear and heal the male lead.]
[To the person above: actually, it isn’t healing.]
Seeing this, I closed my eyes.
And I fell silent too.
What the hell?
Shen Yan is the male lead?
He likes me?
And I have to die??
I thought back over everything that had happened since Shen Yan and I first met in middle school.
We couldn’t stand each other. We were like fire and water.
He made my life difficult, and I made trouble for him.
I couldn’t say I’d felt any romantic stirrings.
Murderous urges, though? Those stirred pretty often.
But this time, he’d gone out of his way to come save my sorry life.
That meant I had to rethink things.
Damn it!
Who had time to think about that? The real issue was how I was supposed to stay alive!
The broadcast suddenly crackled to life.
“All students, please hide yourselves. Do not run around. Wait for rescue!”
The announcement repeated three times.
I opened my feverish eyes and looked at Shen Yan’s back out on the balcony.
The wind carried the reek of blood, crashing against him before spilling toward me.
The cigarette between Shen Yan’s fingers flickered in and out in the dark.
His back was straight, one hand tucked in his pocket, his head lowered slightly as he watched the scene downstairs.
His whole presence felt heavy and oppressive.
I forced my dry, hoarse throat open.
“How are you still watching? Doesn’t it make you sick?”
Shen Yan didn’t turn around. There was a hint of curiosity in his voice.
“I’ve noticed they’re more sensitive to sound than sight. Every time, they bite the ones screaming the loudest first.”
In my heart, I gave him a big thumbs-up.
As expected of the male lead. His first reaction was to observe and study them.
He could watch his own kind die without so much as changing expression, like it had nothing to do with him.
My head hurt like hell, and I drifted off again.
I had no idea how much time passed before a zombie got right up in my face in my dream and scared me awake.
I was drenched in cold sweat, but my body felt a lot lighter.
Shen Yan dug out my roommate’s treasured stash of pickled-pepper instant noodles and made me a pack.
“There isn’t much food in your dorm. We won’t last two days.”
I held the noodles and slurped them down.
“Who knows when rescue will come.”
The bullet screen started scrolling again.
[There won’t be any rescue. The outside world has already completely collapsed.]
[Once they run out of food, they’ll know to leave.]
[They need to go to B City. A human base will be established there. The terrain is rugged, so it’s easy to defend.]
[They should at least wait until the male lead awakens his ability before leaving. Leaving now is basically suicide, especially when he’s dragging around a useless white moonlight.]
[Too bad this white moonlight doesn’t have any abilities and is doomed to die. Otherwise, I’d actually hope he survived, so the male lead would have something to remember in this world.]
[Wouldn’t that turn this into a romance plot? Boring. I’m here to watch the male lead level up and fight monsters, not watch him date.]
I finished the noodle broth while watching the bullet screen, and only then did I remember.
“Why aren’t you eating?”
Shen Yan sat across from me, chin propped on one hand, staring straight at my mouth, which had turned red from the spice.
“I’m not hungry.”
I figured he was probably trying to save food, and guilt pricked at me.
“Quit pretending. You’re so tempted you’re swallowing your own saliva.”
I dug a few packs of snacks out from my bed and tossed them to him.
“Put something in your stomach.”
Shen Yan caught them, tore open a pack of spicy gluten strips, and swallowed it in one bite.
“In a bit, I want to go out and check the other dorms for food.”
I thought about it.
“Yesterday, I saw the dorm across from us come back from the supermarket with a huge haul. Big bags, small bags-lots of food.”
“Then I’ll go get it.”
“But they didn’t open the door.”
“As long as it isn’t locked from the inside, I can slide a card through the crack and push the latch open.”
“Okay.” Then something suddenly occurred to me. “But there’s one more problem.”
“What?”
“Every time this dorm door opens or closes, it screams like a female ghost. The floors above and below can both hear it.”
“…”
