Chapter 3

Late at night, Shen Yan and Zhou Bin were both exhausted and needed sleep to recover their strength.

I’d slept for a full day and night, so I was still in decent spirits. I took on watch duty.

Shen Yan picked the cleanest-looking lower bunk and lay down.

We didn’t dare turn on the lights in the dorm, afraid it would draw zombies over.

In the dim light, I studied Shen Yan.

This mysterious male lead.

He really did have all the makings of one.

Smart, handsome, in great shape.

Ever since he was little, people who liked him had come in droves.

My reason for hating him was simple too.

The girl I liked in middle school liked him.

After I realized in high school that I might be gay, the boy I liked also liked him.

He’d drifted through my whole world like some elusive ghost, seducing away everyone I ever had a crush on, leaving me single and lonely to this day.

To be honest, I wasn’t bad-looking myself. I could be considered kind of handsome.

But standing next to Shen Yan, I just didn’t measure up.

That said, there had been a period when I’d had a crush on him too.

After all, he really was good-looking.

Later, I heard him reject another guy by saying he didn’t like men.

So I gave up-and got even angrier.

How could a straight guy keep cutting off a gay man’s romantic prospects?

Now that I knew he was the male lead, I understood.

Alas! The protagonist halo.

I needed to get in on some of that.

As I thought about it, I dozed off with my head on the desk.

When I opened my eyes again, it was already bright outside.

Shen Yan and Zhou Bin still hadn’t woken up.

The bullet screen appeared again.

[Is the male lead about to awaken his ability?]

[I think it’s metal-type.]

[Isn’t it dual abilities?]

[Zhou Bin awakened too. I remember his was space-type, for storing supplies.]

[Our white moonlight has nothing. How pitiful.]

So pitiful.

Pitiful me still had to tend to two people with high fevers.

I fed them water and wiped away their sweat.

By the time I was done running around, the sky was almost dark again.

Only then did the two of them slowly come around.

The moment Shen Yan woke up, he stared blankly and said, “I feel like there’s some kind of energy inside me.”

Zhou Bin cried out in shock, “What is this? Why does it feel like there’s a room in my head?”

I pretended I knew nothing and spouted nonsense. “There are already zombies. Superpowers should be normal too, right? Hurry up and try to see if you can use them.”

I watched the two of them fumble around.

Zhou Bin made things vanish into thin air.

Shen Yan raised a hand, and an iron bed nearly smashed me to death.

After messing around for ages, Zhou Bin went to the bathroom.

Shen Yan’s fingers twitched slightly, and I heard the sound of my pants zipper sliding down.

I clapped a hand over myself. “What the hell are you doing?”

Shen Yan smiled innocently. “I’m testing how fine my control is.”

I flipped him off. “Put away those filthy thoughts of yours!”

Shen Yan tapped his fingers lightly on the desk, looking half-amused and utterly casual as he said, “Ye Heng, it’s already the end of the world. Don’t you think it’s a little tragic that neither of us has ever dated anyone?”

I was fiddling with my phone that had lost internet connection and gave a perfunctory nod.

“Yeah. Looks like I’ll be going off to reincarnate with my virgin body clean and intact.”

“Then how about dating someone?”

“Who? A zombie?”

Shen Yan leaned forward, hooked a finger under my chin, and lifted my face.

“I mean the two of us. I’ll protect you from now on.”

I curved my lips and raised an eyebrow. “Using a favor to demand repayment?”

Shen Yan frowned slightly. “That’s not what I meant.”

“You saved me, and now you have an ability. You’ll probably have to save me again in the future, so I should use my body in exchange for your protection?”

The bullet screen began defending Shen Yan.

[This supporting male character really doesn’t know what’s good for him.]

[Our male lead is handsome and strong. Being with him is a huge win for him, yet he still dares to use that tone.]

[If he doesn’t want him, give him to me. I want to touch his abs every day!]

[I think Ye Heng is afraid the relationship won’t be equal if they get together. After all, when you’re in the same vulnerable position, being friends and being lovers are two very different things.]

That comment hit the mark.

Although I wanted to cling to the male lead’s thigh, I didn’t want to become an accessory or a purely physical relationship.

Sure, in the short term, I really wouldn’t be losing out.

But human society had collapsed now. The morals and ethics built by a society under the rule of law would slowly disappear.

As a lover without any abilities, I could very easily end up abandoned and looked down on.

I could be with him.

Being with him really wouldn’t be a loss for me.

I had coveted that face and that body before too.

But it couldn’t be this casual, and it couldn’t be on terms led entirely by him.

Shen Yan withdrew his hand.

“You misunderstood. If now isn’t the right time, I won’t talk about it for now. But that really wasn’t what I meant.”

Zhou Bin came out of the bathroom and heard only the last half of that sentence.

“What wasn’t what you meant? What were you two talking about?”

I changed the subject.

“Pack up anything useful. We need to leave.”

“Go where?”

“B City. My phone suddenly had a signal for two seconds just now, and I saw someone say they’re building a human base there.”

I walked past Shen Yan, but he caught my wrist. He remained seated, looking up at me with a hint of scrutiny in his eyes.

“Ye Heng, since Zhou Bin and I both awakened abilities after high fevers, did you feel anything wrong after your fever yesterday?”

I wanted to say no, and that I never would.

Because the bullet screen had spoiled that I would never have an ability.

But then I suddenly remembered that the bullet screen had appeared when I was feverish.

Could it be…

Was my ability seeing the bullet screen?

Predicting the future?

Communicating with people from another world?

Suppressing the excitement inside me, I shook my head.

“All I can say is, I’m still just a mortal.”
