Chapter 1

As the day was winding down, a sudden commotion broke out in the hospital ward.

Such scenes were all too common here, and I’d even prepared a spiel to reason with family members.

But the moment I stepped in, before I could get a word out, a wheelchair slammed into me hard, nearly knocking me over.

Before I could steady myself, a shrill voice rang out:

“Whoever wants this cripple can have him. I’m not paying a cent of his medical bills. If you have to, just wheel him out to die.”

The man in the wheelchair hung his head low, completely unresponsive even to those words. If not for the rise and fall of his chest, I’d have thought he was dead.

The head nurse stood there awkwardly, trying to placate the woman, but only earned a dagger glare.

Then the woman shoved past everyone and spat viciously at the silent, head-hung man.

“Pah! If I were you, I’d have died long ago-spare people the burden!”

The man didn’t even flinch as the spit landed on his face, still as a statue.

I quickly pulled out a tissue and stepped forward to carefully clean the filth from his hair, getting a good look at his face in the process.

A strikingly beautiful man, with translucent, pale skin, now shrouded in a layer of gloom-a strange, compelling beauty.

Mesmerized by his looks, I froze for a moment, then turned to the head nurse with my face flushed, asking, “What happened to him?”

The head nurse sighed helplessly: “A car accident damaged his nerves. He’s paralyzed from the waist down. No one’s taking care of him, and he owes nearly ten thousand in medical bills. His aunt refuses to pay. There’s nothing we can do.”

I looked at the man thoughtfully, pulled out my phone to check my balance, made up my mind, and said to the woman:

“You don’t want him, right? So I’ll take him.”

The head nurse was startled: “Zhiyi, you aren’t thinking of…”

I chuckled: “It’s fine, I have enough money.”

She looked at me with disapproval in her eyes: “There are so many patients in this world. You can’t pay all their medical bills, can you? Besides, you just graduated. You should focus on supporting yourself first.”

The man in the wheelchair stirred slightly at this. I tossed my head with a carefree smile: “Don’t worry, sis. I know what I’m doing. I’ll only save this one.”

The woman snorted at my words: “I’ve never seen someone take a cripple home. If you’re so kind-hearted, take him away, and don’t bother me again!”

With that, she turned and left, afraid I’d chase after her and make her take back this hot potato.
