Chapter 3

When it was time to sleep, I wanted to undress him and carry him to bed.
This was nothing to me; I do this for every patient with mobility issues.
But he clung to the wheelchair armrests, face flushed red, refusing to let me carry him.
“Get out, just get out. I can manage on my own…”
I stood aside with my arms crossed, unwilling to budge, just watching him. Under my gaze, he looked like he was about to overheat.
After a long while, he raised his head, his eyes moist and pleading: “Please, go out…”
Those eyes, wet like a puppy’s, were what I couldn’t stand the most.
I sighed and turned to close the door.
From inside the room came harsh scraping sounds and the rustle of undressing.
Then a dull “thud”-the sound of a body hitting the floor.
Before my hand could touch the doorknob, I heard a tearful voice from within: “Don’t come in! Let me do it myself!”
Upon hearing that, I had no choice but to step back three paces, though I still closely monitored the sounds in the room.
I don’t know how long it took before he finally spoke in a hoarse voice: “Alright, come in.”
The moment I entered, I saw the mess-clothes scattered everywhere, the wheelchair toppled askew on the floor.
Gu Peisi was curled up entirely on my small bed, his cold-sweat-covered back exposed, trembling finely.
I said nothing, just walked over and tucked the blanket around him properly, then turned to tidy up the room.
“What do you want to eat tomorrow? I’ll buy groceries ahead of time.”
He didn’t reply, and I didn’t press further.
Every newly disabled patient is like this; he needs time to accept his incompleteness and to build the psychological suggestion that he needs help.
I understand his feelings very well, but I also know that life isn’t a novel-there isn’t so much time for him to be fragile.
I’ll give him at most three more days. No matter what, he must pull himself together.
After cleaning up the rest of the mess, I slept on the floor that night.
When I woke the next day, the sun was already high in the sky. Luckily I had the day off, or I’d be done for.
There was an extra blanket on me; Gu Peisi must have covered me with it.
He was still in the same position as last night, so I casually turned him out from under the blanket.
He hadn’t eaten properly for too long and had been sick for so long that he had no meat left on his body.
I easily picked him up, ignoring his struggles, and headed to the bathroom.
“Will you do it yourself, or should I help you?”
He flushed red in front of the toilet, veins bulged on his hands, unable to say a word.
I didn’t let him off; I stared into his eyes and asked again and again.
“Will you do it yourself, or should I help you?”
Finally, in a voice as thin as a mosquito’s buzz, he said: “Help me… I can’t do it alone…”
I didn’t wait for him to finish before pulling down his pants. He closed his eyes in humiliation, a trace of tears slipping from the corners.
But in the end, he said nothing.
