Chapter 3

The next day.

I was woken by Shen Nanxin making a racket.

Her smile was downright nasty. “Sister, Consort Rou has summoned you to the palace.”

I opened my eyes blearily.

Then moved my legs.

Thank goodness. Thank goodness.

As long as I could still move,

there was hope.

I quickly got up and changed into a plain dress.

Consort Rou was Xie Weichen’s adoptive mother.

She treated Xie Weichen extremely well.

Yesterday, I had slandered Xie Weichen.

Most likely, this was to call me to account afterward.

I patted my cheeks and pulled open the door.

There was a smile at the corners of Shen Nanxin’s eyes. “Sister, I heard you chose the Third Prince last night?”

“But he’s a fool.”

Without hesitation, I slapped her across the face.

Shen Nanxin fell to the ground.

Clutching her cheek, she stared at me in disbelief. “You hit me?”

“I came to see you out of kindness, and you repay me by acting so utterly inhuman?”

I took a deep breath.

Then kicked her a few more times.

“Gossiping about a prince-how many tongues do you think you have to spare?”

A soft laugh came from the doorway.

The fair-faced eunuch smiled. “Miss Shen, Consort Rou invites you in.”

I entered the palace.

Across two lifetimes,

this was still the first time I had ever met Consort Rou.

She sat upright in the seat of honor, gentle and amiable. “I was unwell yesterday and could not attend the banquet.”

“I truly did not expect that Chen’er would already be getting a wife.”

I sat there, restless, just about to speak,

when the palace doors were pushed open.

Xie Weichen was panting, sweat beading on his forehead.

The fair-faced eunuch hurried after him with a cry, “Third Highness, slow down.”

“You’ve been running for half a quarter-hour. Don’t get heatstroke.”

Xie Weichen’s eyes swept around the room.

They landed on me.

Paused for a few seconds.

Then moved away.

He clenched the corner of his robe, his voice hoarse. “Mother… Mother Consort… let her go.”

Consort Rou bestowed many things upon me.

Many bolts of bright, colorful brocade.

Before I left, she held my hand and instructed me earnestly, “Mother Consort can tell that he cares about you.”

“He has a reserved nature. Please be patient with him.”

Reserved, yes.

In my previous life, he had silently killed Xie Yun.

Then roasted Shen Nanxin.

And in the end, he had cut his own throat before my grave.

Yet he still refused to say a single word about loving me.

Just like now.

Inside the carriage, Xie Weichen’s back was ramrod straight.

He did not say a word.

I narrowed my eyes and studied him.

In my previous life, I had not had much of an impression of him.

I only knew that he was withdrawn.

The physicians said it was some kind of autism.

It could not be cured.

So whether it was treated or not made no difference.

But this time, I wanted him to be well.

I leaned closer. “Xie Weichen, are you very hot?”

“Your ears are so red.”

It was as if I heard something shatter.

Xie Weichen coughed twice and lifted his long sleeve in front of himself like a barrier.

“No marriage… break off the engagement.”

I froze for a long time.

For some reason,

my eyes suddenly stung.

I sniffed, then said with absolutely no moral high ground but plenty of nerve, “I won’t break it off.”

“If you want to break it off, suit yourself.”
