Chapter 5

By the time I arrived at Ji Buyun’s house, leading the immortal crane I’d bought for twenty taels of silver, Ji Buyun had already been sold off for almost six hours…

So I went berserk and got into a fight with Mother Ji.

I ripped out all her hair ornaments, and the immortal crane pecked several bumps into her forehead.

After that, I ran over to Ji Buyun’s father, who was in the middle of gambling, and went berserk all over again.

I flipped his gambling table and robbed him of his silver.

Please shine the light of righteousness upon me. Hands on hips.

After I finished dealing with that pair of scumbag parents, I went to the broker’s office where Ji Buyun had been sold. The sight of him made me regret not punching those two scumbags a few more times.

Chapter 6

Ji Buyun was locked inside an iron cage. The white ribbon in his hair was already filthy, tied loosely behind his head.

His hair hung down in a mess, covering his eyes. That fair little face of his was red and swollen now, as if someone had slapped him hard across the cheek.

I strode toward the cage holding Little Ji Buyun. Hearing the sound, he stirred and lifted his head.

I thought he would cry or smile because I had come to save him.

Who knew the first thing he said would be for me to leave?

He lowered his head and refused to talk to me. I started to panic.

Was he angry because I was late? He wasn’t about to go dark, was he?

Thinking of my mission, I hardened my heart.

I pinched Ji Buyun’s chin and forced him to look up, then, under his startled gaze, stuffed three pieces of candy into his mouth.

“If you eat my candy, you can’t be mad at me anymore.”

Maybe my shameless logic stunned him.

He looked at me in confusion, his cheeks puffed out by the candy, looking adorably blank.

I couldn’t help laughing.

My laughter made Ji Buyun’s face redden a little. He seemed to want to spit the candy into his hand, but when he saw how dirty his hand was, he kept the pieces of candy in his mouth instead.

Only then did I notice the wounds on his wrists and ankles from the iron chains.

I couldn’t laugh anymore. Looking at his already swollen cheek bulging from the candy, I regretted stuffing it into his mouth.

“Does your face hurt? Spit the candy out.”

Ji Buyun slowly shook his head. Because of the candy, his words came out muffled.

But I still understood him. He said, “It doesn’t hurt. It’s really sweet.”

For some reason, my nose stung.

“I’ll give you even sweeter candy from now on.”

Chapter 7

I broke open the cage and the iron chains binding him.

Then I reached out, wanting to carry him out.

But Ji Buyun refused.

“I’m really dirty.”

After a few seconds of silence, I flopped onto the ground with a thud and rolled around twice.

My originally pure-white clothes were instantly covered in dust.

“Now I’m dirty too.”

While he was still stunned, I scooped him into my arms and slipped out of the broker’s office through the window.

After we returned to the inn,

as I was treating his wounds, Ji Buyun took out the fifty-tael banknote from his robes.

“I’m giving it back to you.”

I stared blankly at that banknote for several seconds.

He hadn’t given it to his mother.

I suddenly realized that Ji Buyun actually understood everything.

“You won’t sell me, will you?”

“I won’t!” My voice was utterly firm.

The moment I finished speaking, tears as big as beans spilled from his eyes. As he wiped them away, he choked out, “Don’t lie to me…”

“I won’t lie to you.”

My heart ached a little as I hugged Ji Buyun’s small body and gently patted his back.

He hugged me back, sobbing in hiccups as he said, “Then I’ll be your first friend too…”

He actually still remembered what I had said before.

“Mm. Okay.”

Grrrumble. Ji Buyun’s stomach growled.

He seemed embarrassed and buried his little head against my shoulder.

He sniffled. Beside my ear, his childish voice, thick with tears, whispered, “I’m hungry…”

“What do you want to eat?”

“…”

“Tomato and eggs…”
