Chapter 1

I was the first god born between heaven and earth-Sucang, sovereign over women’s marriages and childbirth.

I was also the last goddess in all creation.

For tens of thousands of years, I governed karma and reincarnation. Then, without warning, the Heavenly Emperor called me to account.

He said I had given women too much preferential treatment.

So I made a wager with him: he would descend to the mortal realm in the body of a woman.

During that time, the Heavenly Emperor would lose his memories and divine powers. He would be nothing more than an ordinary woman.

The Heavenly Emperor agreed without hesitation, and the surrounding immortal lords cheered for him one after another.

“Such boldness, Your Majesty!”

“Even if Sucang was the first god born between heaven and earth, she is still a woman in the end. Long hair, short wit.”

Strange, wasn’t it?

As more and more ancient gods fell, fewer and fewer new goddesses were born.

Most of the new gods in the Heavenly Realm had ascended from mortals, and not a single one among them was a woman.

I was confined atop a high mountain. I could only divine through the stars; I could not see the mortal world with my own eyes.

The Heavenly Emperor’s descent was a rare opportunity for me.

The Heavenly Emperor’s name was Fuqi.

In his first life, he was born in a remote mountain village.

The gods crowded together, craning their necks to look, their voices tinged with excitement.

Star Lord Mao Ri was the most enthusiastic of all.

Star Lord Mao Ri had taken form from a golden pheasant in the mountains and forests. I had heard he, too, had first been born in a village.

Full of vigor, Star Lord Mao Ri said to the others,

“The people of mountain villages are the warmest and most hospitable.

“I still remember when I first broke out of my shell. The old woman of the household picked me up and carefully placed me in a pile of straw.

“The children in the village were lively and adorable. Elder brothers were loving, younger brothers respectful, and everyone was united.

“I still remember the year of the famine. That old woman would rather starve herself to death than deny her grandson the last bowl of coarse rice porridge.”

I listened in silence, my eyes fixed on the Water Mirror.

A flash of spiritual light rippled across the Water Mirror, revealing the scene of Fuqi’s birth.

Star Lord Mao Ri burst into hearty laughter and said excitedly to those around him, “Fuqi is truly blessed. This family is descended from that old woman back then. I imagine he will ascend very soon in this lifetime!”

He turned his head and smiled at me with false courtesy.

“Sucang, it seems your luck is not very good. Why don’t you transfer the authority over childbirth to me later?”

He had gone too far.

I looked at him and said, enunciating each word, “Star Lord, if you lose, how about you give me your authority over the rising and setting of the sun?”

Star Lord Mao Ri agreed without the slightest hesitation.

It seemed he had already imagined how he would use the authority over childbirth. The smugness on his face was impossible to hide.

“One hen can lead a whole brood of chicks. Yet you, Sucang, proposed that a female can carry no more than one at a time. At this rate, how is the mortal world supposed to prosper?

“Truly, the softheartedness of women!”

He enlarged the image in the Water Mirror and thrust it before the faces of the gods.

“Look, the mountain village-”

As he spoke, Star Lord Mao Ri’s expression suddenly changed.

Mine changed as well.

In the image, the infant’s fists were clenched, her face purplish-blue as she bobbed up and down in the icy river water.

Before long, she stopped breathing.

Fuqi was dead.

From birth to death, he had lived for only a brief quarter of an hour.

The moment he emerged from his mother’s womb, the old woman in the room hurried forward to inspect his body.

After discovering he was a baby girl, she drowned Fuqi in the river without a moment’s hesitation.

Star Lord Mao Ri’s face flushed red, then turned pale.

Through gritted teeth, he demanded, “Sucang, did you calculate this in advance?

“Did you deliberately lure me into humiliating myself today because you’ve been coveting my authority all along?”

But a single tear abruptly slid down my face.

Goddesses cannot shed tears.

Once they do, a portion of their immortal power dissipates.

How could I possibly have calculated this in advance?

I reached out, wanting to touch the mountain village inside the Water Mirror.

“Behind one drowned baby girl are tens of millions of baby girls who will never see the light of day.

“All you care about is the transfer of authority. How could you know the torment in my heart?

“All living beings suffer, and so do I.”

Beside me, Star Lord Mao Ri suddenly let out a low, agonized roar.

A dazzling light escaped from his body and, in the blink of an eye, rushed into mine.

I clenched my hand, feeling strangely unsettled.

The immortal power that had dissipated with my tear was, at that very moment, replenished by Star Lord Mao Ri’s divine power.

Yet his divine power did not reject me in the slightest. In an instant, it fused with me completely.

I looked at Star Lord Mao Ri as he writhed on the ground in agony and asked him, “You said the people of this mountain village were loving elder brothers and respectful younger brothers. Then let me ask you: what about the girls in the village?

“The ones who vanished-where did they go?”

Star Lord Mao Ri did not answer.

Having lost his divine power, he gradually regressed until he finally returned to his original form.

The surrounding immortal lords’ faces suddenly changed, and they all took a step back.

There was no beautiful golden pheasant on the ground.

Only a crow with every feather fallen out, bald and bare.
