Chapter 52

On the day the movie premiered, I walked the red carpet for the first time in ages.

This time, I didn’t have Zhou Yan do it for me.

He stood in the shadows at the end of the red carpet.

The Processing Division had gotten him a temporary pass.

The identity written on it was ridiculous.

When I walked up to the cameras, flashes burst in a blinding wave.

I still felt uncomfortable.

I still felt as if all those gazes were sticking to my skin.

But I didn’t run.

And I didn’t lend out my face.

A reporter shouted, “Zhiyi, look over here!”

I turned my head.

This time, my smile wasn’t exactly perfect.

It was even a little tired.

But someone in the live comments said:

She finally looks human.

I didn’t know if that counted as a compliment.

But I liked it well enough.

When I stepped off the red carpet, Zhou Yan came over.

He asked, “Do you want me to block them?”

I said, “No.”

After a pause, I added, “You can stand a little closer.”

He stood a little closer.

Really, only a little.

I realized he had gotten very good at stopping himself.

His hand stopped half an inch from my shoulder, not touching.

His shadow stopped beside mine, not pressing down on it.

Even his gaze stopped there.

Though he had no eyes.

After the movie premiere ended, Su Man came over and hugged me.

Zhou Yan’s hand twitched.

I looked at him.

He pulled his hand back.

“I’m controlling it.”

Su Man laughed so hard she could barely stand it.

“This security consultant of yours is pretty dedicated.”

I said, “He is.”

Zhou Yan asked seriously, “Is that praise?”

Su Man said, “More or less.”

Zhou Yan nodded.

“Thank you.”

His tone was very stiff when he said thank you.

And yet, he was so serious about it.

All of a sudden, I felt that compared to when he had first come out of the mirror, he seemed much more human now.

The movie was a hit.

Not because of my face.

At least, not entirely.

People started discussing the character, discussing how actresses were consumed by the camera, discussing whether beauty was a form of labor.

Of course, some people still only screenshotted my face.

That couldn’t be helped.

I no longer fought every pair of eyes.

Zhou Yan was changing, too.

Sometimes he would stare blankly into a small mirror.

On his featureless face, a vague outline slowly began to appear.

It wasn’t mine.

Nor was it anyone I knew.

I asked him if it hurt.

He said, “It itches.”

“Faces can itch too?”

“Maybe it’s growing.”

I leaned closer to look.

He took half a step back.

“Don’t get too close.”

“Why?”

“I’ll want to borrow it.”

His answer was far too blunt.

The tips of my ears heated.

“Then keep backing up.”

Zhou Yan retreated all the way to the wall.

He looked a little pitiful.

I couldn’t help laughing.
