Chapter 2

For once, I felt a rare sense of crisis.

It wasn’t as if no one had ever tried to poach Wen Yishi before.

But he had never paid any attention to those olive branches.

Meeting someone privately and hitting it off so well? That was a first.

The moment I thought about the possibility of Wen Yishi jumping ship, I started waking up from nightmares.

I gnawed on my fingernail and reflected on myself. Had my pranks really gone a little too far?

So, in order to save our friendship that was teetering on the brink, and in order not to lose the best Executive Assistant in the entire world-

I painfully gave up what I loved and shelved all the pranks on my schedule.

I began going to work honestly. I stopped making trouble for Wen Yishi and did my utmost to display the maturity and steadiness a boss ought to have.

After three days of behaving myself, the light was about to leave my eyes.

But when I looked back, Wen Yishi’s expression was even worse than mine.

“President Xie, did I do something wrong?” he asked, his voice low. “You suddenly started distancing yourself from me… Is it because you don’t need me anymore?”

I nearly jumped out of my office chair in fright.

“Don’t say things that are bad for unity. Of course I need you!”

It wasn’t until I resumed my pranks, forced him to work overtime and play games with me, and monopolized all his rest time that Wen Yishi was finally satisfied.

My plan to act well-behaved failed, so I started thinking about giving him a raise.

No one would turn up their nose at money. As long as I offered a high enough salary, surely the other side wouldn’t be able to dig out my corner, right?

With a grand wave of my hand, I found a few random excuses and raised Wen Yishi’s salary several times.

Sure enough, Wen Yishi was very happy.

Seeing him happy made me happy too. I thought things were finally stable this time.

Then, on a sudden whim, I went to the finance department to check.

Only to discover that after all those raises, Wen Yishi finally only owed me one hundred thousand yuan this month.

The reason was that every time one of my pranks failed, I would fly into embarrassed anger and announce that I was deducting his pay.

Wen Yishi apparently didn’t understand what a joke was and had actually asked finance to deduct it from his salary.

Deduction after deduction, the diligent Assistant Wen had turned into someone paying to come to work.

After all that, he was only preparing to quit, not sue me in court?

Clearly, a salary raise held absolutely no appeal for Wen Yishi, a man who could even accept “paying to come to work.”

My plan to throw money at the problem was officially bankrupt.

Since tempting him with profit didn’t work-

I could only move him with emotion.

In the end, I decided to use one of the Thirty-Six Stratagems, the one everyone knew-

The beauty trap.

“That’s the situation. So,” I clenched my fist encouragingly, “go get ’em, big brother! Believe in yourself. You can do it!”

Xie Xiao pointed at the tip of his own nose, bewildered and shocked.

“Huh? Me? I’m supposed to use the beauty trap?”

I laid out my logic clearly. “You two have known each other for ten years. You’re his best friend. The fact that he’s tolerated me this far must be because of you.”

“But no matter how much he values brotherhood, there’s no way he’d go this far. Unless he really is an AI that cultivated into a spirit, he must want something!”

I looked at Xie Xiao’s handsome face, seven-tenths similar to mine and ten-tenths good at attracting attention.

“If it’s not money, then it can only be looks.”

My brother felt like something was off.

But he had run off to become a zookeeper as soon as he graduated, and the folds in his brain had long since been smoothed out under the soothing influence of fluffy animals.

So after thinking hard for a long while, he gave up on thinking and chose to blindly trust me.

“Fine, I’m good with anything. Since you put it that way, you must have your reasons.”
