Chapter 1

Early that morning, I was oiling a sword when a junior sister passed by and shrieked.

“Sang Le, do you have a death wish? You stole a sword from the Heartless Path?”

My hand froze. I stopped scrubbing, and the sword gave a faintly disgruntled wiggle, rubbing against my palm.

Like a spoiled little pig-kitten.

I stroked it soothingly while defending myself.

“This is my childhood friend’s sword. I took it from his room. How could I possibly have the wrong one?”

A month ago, Pei Qingwu had gotten upset again, unilaterally deleted my contact information, and refused to see me.

All I could do was get up early every day and secretly wash his sword to make peace.

My junior sister looked puzzled.

“But Senior Brother Pei Qingwu moved out ages ago.”

“He didn’t tell you? The rest of us all knew. Before he left, he even gave us gifts.”

“The person living there now is the pride of the Heartless Path, their only hope of graduation, their supreme precious seedling-Wan Changqing.”

Before I could recover from the shock, my junior sister crept over, trembling, and stared at the pine-green sword in my hands.

“I’d recognize that sword even if it were reduced to ash.”

“It snapped my sword in half and turned our junior brother’s sword into powder. Senior brother’s sword was fine only because he shielded it with his body and ended up with every bone broken. Even my master couldn’t last three moves against that prodigy.”

The more my junior sister spoke, the more animated she became.

For example, Wan Changqing had single-handedly farmed the Demon Lord ten times in a row; he had shown up to a competition with a high fever and still swept the entire field with indiscriminate attacks-including his own master; he had sleepwalked while riding his eighty-year-old master around the mountain; his idea of rest was helping other people block lightning tribulations.

…

This man was decisive in killing, sinister, and utterly heartless.

She looked at me with deep sorrow.

“Sang Le, since it’s your first offense, Wan Changqing might only chop off your hand. It won’t hurt. He’s very fast.”

I shuddered.

“It’s not my first offense. I’ve been washing it for a month. That’s thirty offenses?”

Every day, I had stuffed harassment letters in there.

Wandered around his room cleaning.

I had even taken his pants away and secretly washed them.

My junior sister turned and bolted. “From now on, don’t tell anyone you know me. I’m afraid of collective punishment wiping out my whole clan.”

“Go apologize. I’ll collect your corpse later.”

Chapter 2

I stood before the wooden door, pacing back and forth.

I had come here every day for the past month, and the door had always been closed. I never suspected a thing.

Because Pei Qingwu had a twisted personality. Whenever he got angry, he refused to see me. He would give me the cold shoulder, ignore me, keep his distance.

But I had thick skin, so we complemented each other.

His longest record was not speaking to me for half a month, until I took the initiative to make peace.

Only then did he reluctantly forgive me.

I had thought Pei Qingwu was just throwing another tantrum this time.

Instead, he had moved out entirely. Even the watchdog at the door knew, but he hadn’t told me.

I swallowed the bitterness in my heart. Right now, staying alive mattered more.

After mustering my courage, I gently knocked on the door.

There was no movement inside.

Before I could knock again, the sword in my hand rose up and smacked the door to pieces with one strike.

Then it turned back as if showing off, wildly wagging its sword tassel as it spun circles around me.

…

I was dead.

Amid the dust and smoke, the person on the bed slowly sat up.

So he had been resting.

He strode out. Tall and elegant as jade, his brows and eyes were wrapped in the irritation of someone who had been rudely awakened.

When he saw me, Wan Changqing’s gloomy eyes lowered slightly, and his voice was deep.

“What is it?”

I held out the sword to Wan Changqing with both hands. It gave off a floral scent, gleamed brilliantly, and looked just like a beautiful little crystal cake.

He froze, then took a deep breath.

As if the smell had choked him, the tips of his ears turned bright red.

I stammered, “I’m sorry, I washed…” the wrong sword.

Before I could finish, Wan Changqing said blandly, “I know you like me.”

“But why are you only confessing now?”

“My master is away on business recently, so I can’t process my withdrawal from school.”

Trembling, I asked, “Why would you withdraw?”

Wan Changqing said, “The rules of the Heartless Path state that if you have a wife, you must Kill Wife to Prove the Dao. You cannot die, so I have to withdraw.”

He finished calmly and composedly.

The sole seedling of the Heartless Path, their only hope of graduation, the heaven-blessed prodigy, was going to drop out for me?

A chill ran down my back.

I hastily urged him to stay in school. “Then what about employment? I heard cultivation also cares about academic credentials. If you don’t graduate from the Heartless Path, what will you do in the future?”

Wan Changqing was very calm.

“I am powerful. I can make a living by blocking lightning tribulations for people.”

He lowered his eyes slightly, his voice turning somewhat strange.

“We are not yet married, and you already care about me this much. Don’t worry. I will withdraw as soon as possible and stay with you.”

Between Kill Wife to Prove the Dao and a genius dropping out of school, I chose to be a cowardly turtle.
