Little Fragrant Pig Sword - Chapter 2
Chapter 2
Following the address, I found the courtyard my childhood friend had recently moved into.
I had brought gifts on purpose: handmade tea-scented pastries, stir-fried peanuts, and a jar of home-brewed Nü’er Hong wine.
Because I needed to ask him for help.
His master was on good terms with Wan Changqing’s master. Maybe he would have a way to clear up the misunderstanding.
Before Pei Qingwu went up the mountain to cultivate, he had been the young master who lived across from my family. He was arrogant, pampered, and terribly picky about food.
But he had once praised the things I made.
I took a deep breath, put on a smile, and walked through the gate-only to run straight into Pei Qingwu as he was coming out.
The moment he saw me, his face cooled. He said nothing.
I arranged the things on the table and said tactfully, “Pei Qingwu, these are all your favorites. I’ve run into a bit of trouble recently, and I was hoping you could help-”
Before I could finish, Pei Qingwu cut me off.
“Heh. Only showing up now? My room is filthy. I don’t feel like talking to you.”
I understood at once. I ran inside and got to work, huffing and puffing as I cleaned.
By the time I finished, my mouth was dry, and my stomach was growling. I returned to the courtyard to find Pei Qingwu.
Only to see that everything on the table had been eaten clean.
All that remained was a mess.
Pei Qingwu had called over a group of friends, and they were all drinking and toasting each other.
His back was to me, so he couldn’t see my mouth turn down.
One of his senior brothers laughed and teased him.
“Pei Qingwu! You waited an entire month with your neck craned, always spacing out and asking us if we’d seen any letters from your little childhood sweetheart. Sang Le finally came today! Otherwise, we wouldn’t have gotten to eat all this delicious food.”
Pei Qingwu gave a cold snort.
“Better if she hadn’t come. She held out for a whole month before coming to find me. That’s a record for her. These are what she should have given me anyway. She still owes me a month’s worth.”
A junior brother said sweetly, “Senior Brother, don’t say that. She’s your childhood sweetheart. If you don’t cherish her, plenty of people would like her. She has a good personality, and she’s hardworking and cheerful. Why not introduce her to us?”
Pei Qingwu interrupted him.
“She’s not as good as you make her sound.”
“She isn’t worthy of me, and she isn’t worthy of any of you either. Down the mountain, her family is ordinary, and she has younger siblings at home. She was born to be a maid. Up here on the mountain, she’s just a mortal with no perception or talent. It was only out of kindness that I allowed her to cling to me so shamelessly.”
I rubbed my reddened eyes and listened quietly until the end.
So this was how he saw me.
Each word sank into my heart. I remembered them all, and line by line, I crossed out all the feelings I had held for him over the years.
