Chapter 14

Another secret. This guy had way more secrets than any normal person should.

Cynthia did not agree right away. “Tell me first. I’ll consider it after I hear it.”

“It’s not some difficult request.” The Ghost’s tone grew a little more serious than before.

It added gloomily, “There’s a soul-binding seal on my remains. Because of it, even after I died, my soul was trapped here and couldn’t leave. I can only move around this deserted island.

“One hundred and sixteen years and six months. It has been so boring. Just burn my remains into ashes, put them in a bottle, and set them out to sea. That’s my request.”

“…”

It was several times simpler than Cynthia had expected. Somewhat puzzled, she asked, “You’ve been here for over a century. You never tried possessing anyone else?”

Once a possession succeeded, wouldn’t he be able to go wherever he wanted?

“Hardly anyone comes here, and besides, I couldn’t beat them, so I never tried,” the Ghost said honestly. “To tell you the truth, if you hadn’t forcibly lured me into your body today, I probably still wouldn’t have known how to possess a living person even ten years from now.”

Cynthia fell silent. Then even more silent.

She knew Ghosts generally were not very destructive, but this one was a little too committed to doing absolutely nothing.

The Ghost urged her, “Oh, come on. In any case, I’m sincerely asking you for help. Will you agree or not? Please say yes! This is this young master’s final wish. Orz.”

As if afraid she would refuse, the Ghost added, “The secret I’m going to tell you is worth a fortune, you know~”

“Fine, fine. I agree,” Cynthia said helplessly. “Now tell me. What secret are you talking about?”

The Ghost said, “੭ˊᵕˋ੭ Hehe. Actually, that Bone Key from earlier is the key to opening this young master’s Family Forbidden Ground. It’s said to lead to a mysterious land of opportunity.

“Also, I have a fortune stored at the Imperial Bank. As long as you fulfill my wish, I’ll tell you how to make the key recognize you as its master, and I’ll give you all the wealth I’ve accumulated. Pretty generous of me, right?”

This deal was far too good to pass up, so naturally, Cynthia did not refuse. “All right. I’ll help you fulfill your wish.”

The Ghost cheered, “Yay!”

After they reached an agreement, Cynthia did not continue the conversation.

During this time, her teammates had finished their analysis.

The conclusion they came to was already very close to the truth.

Cynthia simply told them about the conversation between her and the Ghost.

Of course, she did not mention the deal involving the key.

People were selfish. They had only known one another for a few short days. When benefits were involved, of course she would prioritize herself first.

After briefly explaining that these were traces left behind by the Ghost, she steered the topic toward the cliff.

“According to the Ghost, the Rank-9 Magical Beast inside the cliff will leave today. Let’s observe the situation first. If there are no problems, we’ll head to the bottom of the cliff and see whether the so-called treasure it mentioned is really hidden there.”

After considering her proposal for a moment, Eli suggested, “Since the Ghost is so familiar with the terrain and can contact you, why not bind a Temporary Contract first? When the time comes, let it go down to the bottom of the cliff to scout ahead. Through the contract, you can verify whether the situation down there is as it says.”

Ghosts and humans could bind contracts with each other, just like spirit beasts and humans.

A soul contract lasted for life after life, binding both parties together through life and death.

A slave contract placed one party beneath the other.

As for a Temporary Contract, it was the freest and most equal type of contract.

While the contract was in effect, the two parties could not only sense each other’s surroundings, but with mutual permission, they could also share part of their memories. More importantly, the contract could be dissolved at any time, and neither party would be restricted by the other.

Cynthia thought it over, then asked the Ghost for its opinion.

The Ghost was completely indifferent. “I’m fine with it.”

Since it agreed, Cynthia accepted Eli’s suggestion and signed a Temporary Contract with the Ghost.
It was still early, only four in the morning.

After discussing the itinerary for tomorrow, the five of them decided to take turns resting.

During this time, Eli and Sangmo also tried actively allowing the Ghost into their bodies to enhance their mental strength.
Like Richter and Vernel, they both ultimately forced themselves awake by strangling the Ghost.

After Cynthia put the Bone Key and the Ghost’s remains into her Storage Ring, she quietly stood guard at the cave entrance.

She waited until daylight broke through the night, and the lingering, sinister chill finally faded completely.

“Captain.”

Richter’s voice came from behind her.

“What is it?” Cynthia glanced over at him.

Richter leaned lazily against the cleanest stretch of wall and rubbed his eyes, his tone languid. “You go rest first. I’ll take over the watch.”

Maybe it was because he had just woken up, but the skin around his eyes was still noticeably red, and even his voice sounded drowsy and slack.

Cynthia thought back to the member information she had seen on the Spirit Card.

By age, all four of them were already sixteen. Only Richter was still fifteen.

Eli’s birthday was in January, Vernel’s in February, and Sangmo’s in May.

Like the original owner of this body, she had been born in June.

Richter’s birthday, meanwhile, was at the end of December. He was still half a year away from turning sixteen-on Blue Star, he would only have just started his first year of high school.

No wonder this guy sometimes felt like he had two completely different personalities, yet at other times seemed so simple and straightforward.

Seeing Cynthia staring at him, Richter lifted his eyes slightly and said with a soft laugh, “Am I that good-looking?”

Cynthia came back to herself, got up, and walked into the cave, not forgetting to answer him. “No.”

“Liars are puppies,” Richter said, dissatisfied.

“Fine. You’re actually quite pretty,” Cynthia replied perfunctorily, then ignored him.

To be honest, she was a little puzzled.

Richter had clearly awakened his Sequence before the age of sixteen, but it was a low-level Spirit Sequence. Did that mean Divine Sequence holders weren’t the only ones with the privilege of awakening early?

After keeping watch all night, drowsiness swept over her. Cynthia stopped thinking about it and walked over to a flat stone surface to lie down and rest.

Who cared whether it was a Divine Sequence or not? Right now, sleep was the most important thing.

–

Fortunately, they weren’t attacked by any Magical Beasts that day. The five of them took turns resting and cultivating until early the next morning, then followed the map carved into the wall and headed toward the cliff.

But halfway there, a suffocating pressure suddenly erupted from deep within the forest.

At the same time, countless Magical Beasts surged out from the depths of the woods like a tide, fleeing outward.

Sharp claws crushed rotting leaves underfoot, and panicked roars rang out one after another.

The sky was abruptly blotted out by a swath of darkness. Hidden in the shadows, Cynthia looked up and saw a gigantic Demon Dragon flying toward the outer edge of the island.

It seemed the Ghost had been telling the truth. This ninth-tier Demon Dragon would leave the island today.

The five of them exchanged glances. Once the Demon Dragon’s pressure had faded, they picked up their pace and rushed toward the cliff.
Ten minutes later.

Cynthia released the Ghost. “Go scout the bottom of the cliff and see if there are any other high-level Magical Beasts.”

The Ghost clicked its tongue. “I can guarantee there definitely aren’t. The bottom of this cliff is the Demon Dragon’s exclusive territory. Who would dare come close?”

As it spoke, it flew down over the cliff. Only half an hour later did Cynthia connect to its vision through the contract.

What the Ghost had said was indeed true. There were no other Magical Beasts beneath the cliff, and it was exceptionally quiet.

“No problem. Jump,” Cynthia said, taking the lead as she leapt off the cliff.

Seeing this, Vernel did not hesitate and dove after her.

The other three followed at an unhurried pace.

The cliff was deeper than they had imagined. It took nearly ten minutes before they reached the bottom.

A lake spread out around them. Beside the lake was a massive cave, which was most likely the Demon Dragon’s lair.

Eli observed their surroundings. “There’s a spirit vein hidden beneath this lake. No wonder the Demon Dragon chose to make its nest here.”

Perhaps because of that spirit vein, the environment at the bottom of the cliff could only be described as a verdant paradise.

Countless high-level spirit plants were in bloom, and even piles of magic crystal ore had condensed in the corners. Just looking at it was enough to set one’s heart racing.
