Chapter 15

Dragons, as a rule, kept their treasures in their lairs. After confirming the area was safe, Cynthia headed straight for the cave.

But as soon as she drew close, she discovered that the entrance was shrouded in a layer of crimson demonic mist, radiating a bone-chilling cold.

Cynthia did not rush forward. She bent down, picked up a pebble, and tossed it toward the cave.

The instant the pebble entered the mist’s range, it was crushed into powder and scattered to the ground.

Cynthia took a step back and tried condensing a ball of magic to attack it.

The moment it touched the red area, the magic ball was reflected right back.

As expected of a Rank-9 Magical Beast. Even away from home, it had not forgotten to seal its lair with a Backlash Barrier.

Cynthia knew perfectly well that, at their current level, there was no way they could break the barrier. She looked at her teammates and said, “The cave has a ninth-rank seal set by the Demon Dragon. With our current cultivation, we can’t break it. Let’s collect the spiritual plants and magic crystals around here first, then look elsewhere.”

The four of them had seen everything she had just done, so naturally, they understood this was the best decision for now.

Eli and Richter gave a hum of agreement, while Sangmo and Vernel silently nodded.
An hour later, with the help of magic, the five of them had gathered every spiritual plant and magic crystal around the lake and even beneath the water.

The spiritual vein at the bottom of the lake had been born of heaven and earth. It was the lifeblood of this island, so they did not damage or touch it.

There was only a small forest near the lake. After collecting the surrounding spiritual plants and magic crystals, Cynthia was just about to suggest they check the forest when Richter walked up to her.

He held out a large pile of Storage Rings and storage pouches. “Captain, here.”

A few of the magical accessories were even stained with dark blood. Cynthia glanced around.

Sure enough, the magical accessories on the dozens of skeletons had all disappeared.

Richter asked with an innocent look, “You don’t want them, Captain? There are lots of gold coins and crystals inside. If you don’t want them, I’ll throw them away.”

Seeing that he really was about to toss them aside at random, Cynthia took them first. “I didn’t say I didn’t want them.”

Magical accessories automatically released their binding twenty years after their owner’s death. Richter clearly knew this; the ones he had picked were all magical accessories that had already been unbound.

After considering the various factors, Cynthia placed them on the ground one by one and used magic to take out everything inside.

A dazzling array of currencies and crystals spilled out, along with quite a few magical tools and all sorts of rare, valuable items.

Cynthia thought for a moment, then said, “These can serve as the team’s funds from now on. But it’s best not to take anything that can identify the owner, to avoid unnecessary trouble.”

Richter smiled. “Whatever you decide, Captain.”

There was never any harm in being cautious. Cynthia selected some materials and currency, but no matter how rare the items with identifying significance were, she left them all untouched.

After they finished gathering the rest, she returned the magical accessories to their original owners one by one, then found a place with abundant magic far from the Demon Dragon’s lair and made graves for them.

This island was a land of extreme yin. Souls that died here could not reincarnate. They would either become Ghosts or Vengeful Spirits.

Judging from the marks on the bones, most of these people had been dead for decades, or even over a century. When Cynthia built the graves, she tried using spirit-detecting magic to sense them, but there was no response at all.

That meant their souls had either been absorbed by the Demon Dragon, or their soul power had dissipated and they had long since vanished into nothingness.

After burying the bones one by one, Cynthia did not dwell on it further. She signaled for her teammates to head deeper into the forest.

—

The small forest did not cover a particularly large area, but perhaps because no one had visited it in years, the precious spiritual plants within were no fewer than those near the Demon Dragon’s lair.

Cynthia collected whatever she saw. Wherever she passed, nothing was left behind except seeds that could grow again.

But the greatest surprise was that at the end of the forest, there was actually a Star Marrow Tree.

Its branches and leaves were a translucent pale gold, and the Star Marrow Fruit hanging from it looked from a distance like white pearls giving off a faint glow.

Star Marrow Fruit could increase mental strength. For them right now, it was the best opportunity they could ask for.

Unfortunately, a Star Marrow Tree only bore fruit once in its lifetime, so there was no point in digging up the tree itself.

After picking all the fruit with her teammates, Cynthia dug up the three saplings hidden in a corner, roots, soil, and all, and placed them into her Storage Ring. She planned to try cultivating them when she had time.

Once they had searched the entire cliffside area, the group did not linger. They left the cliff ahead of schedule and returned to the cave on the outer edge of the island.

With the help of the Star Marrow Fruit, their mental strength finally met the standard three days later, and at last, they returned to the academy.
Moon Soul Academy, Class 659’s first-year classroom.

The man leaned back in the chair at the lecture podium, his long blue hair draped casually over one shoulder. He seemed to be thinking. His misty violet eyes were lowered slightly, and his expression was faint, indifferent, and careless.

If one had to describe him in a single phrase, “elegant as jade” would suit him best.

Amid the silence, he lifted his eyes, his gaze sweeping over the five students below. He looked as though he was smiling, yet for no reason at all, it made fear rise in their hearts. “A course that was originally meant to take one day, and after seven days, you’ve only completed half of it. Your progress is comparable to a snail crawling.”

The five of them, who had just been teleported back to the classroom from the deserted island, were greeted by a reprimand as the first thing they heard. While they felt the pressure, they also felt somewhat unconvinced.

But they also knew that resisting at this moment would not benefit them in the slightest, so they tacitly remained silent.

Griffin clearly did not care what their answer was, or whether they answered at all.

He flipped through the blank lesson plan and said flatly, “For the next course, I will only give you two days. If you cannot complete it, then there is no need for you to participate in the Freshman Tournament.”

Before the five of them could prepare themselves, the scene changed once again.

Cynthia was almost getting used to this kind of thing.

But this time, what greeted them was a pitch-black, confined space.
