Chapter 164

Yi Shuang VS Fang Ge (1)

Yi Shuang had no memories from before Thriller descended. She did not remember how she had grown up.

Her memories began with her first Thriller dungeon, as if she had been born without a past.

Back then, Thriller had polluted the human world for the very first time, showing the world, through high-profile livestreams, the players trapped inside dungeons and struggling to survive.

The viewers who flooded into the livestream room left comments, and those comments formed her first understanding of this world.

The first dungeon she entered was an ordinary residential neighborhood. All she had to do was ensure her own survival. Her physical abilities back then were nowhere near what they were now, and in that first dungeon, the Safe Zone she had finally managed to find was occupied by other players too panicked and terrified to care. Left with no choice, she had to stay outside and maneuver around the Anomaly.

She was lucky enough to survive. From then on, she saw through human nature and no longer dared to associate with others.

After the dungeon ended, she was teleported to an apartment in a high-end residential complex. She also discovered that she had money, but she knew nothing about how she had obtained it, or whether she had any family.

Five years passed, and no one claiming to be her family ever came looking for her. She was the most famous in the dungeons, had the highest points, and her livestream room was the most popular, yet still no so-called relatives came to visit or called to ask about her. That confirmed it for her: she was alone.

It was as if she had appeared out of thin air. She did not dwell on the blank space that was her past. In the dungeon life that followed, she was unwilling to get too entangled with anyone. She treated clearing dungeons as the meaning of her existence.

Her life, calm as still water, was disrupted in a pet hospital dungeon.

That day, in the corridor, several Anomaly were sharing a corpse between them. When Fang Ge was nearly discovered, Yi Shuang happened to pass by and casually pulled her out of danger.

At the time, she truly had not intended to use Fang Ge to scout the way. Fang Ge said she was a veteran player, but she was not at all mature in how she handled things. Yi Shuang figured that entrusting her with anything would probably be unreliable.

They had met by chance in that dungeon, and Yi Shuang did not take it to heart.

She simply had not expected to run into her again in another dungeon.

Fang Ge seemed to have great faith in her abilities. The moment she saw Yi Shuang, she started flattering her, saying she wanted to cling to a powerful thigh, and insisted on following her.

Yi Shuang rejected her sternly, but Fang Ge was quite thick-skinned. She did not seem embarrassed at all and insisted on trailing after her, saying she wanted to be the accessory hanging from Yi Shuang’s leg.

Seeing that Fang Ge was not getting in the way, Yi Shuang let her do as she pleased.

Later, after they ran into each other in dungeons more and more often, they became friends.

Fang Ge was the only person Yi Shuang had kept in long-term contact with, and she was also the only vivid stroke of color in Yi Shuang’s memories over the past five years.

But what Yi Shuang had not expected was for Fang Ge to say she liked her and wanted to date her.

Dating-just like the dungeon’s final boss, Ye Susheng. Once Ye Susheng fell in love, she had something to worry about, to the point that she could not even hold her blade steady. She lost her composure and her discipline.

Yi Shuang kept a respectful distance from love-addled minds. Naturally, she had no longing for romance either.

Most importantly, she needed to survive in the dungeons, to live through them again and again. If she had someone she cared about, someone she loved, she was afraid she would lose her rationality and end up dying in a dungeon.

That was why she could not accept Fang Ge’s passionate affection. So when Fang Ge confessed to her for the first time, Yi Shuang rejected her without hesitation.

Afterward, Fang Ge was heartbroken for a long while. Yi Shuang thought she would give up, but to her surprise, Fang Ge only grew more determined with every setback.

From roundabout tactics at the beginning to direct attacks later on, Fang Ge could always come up with all sorts of tricks. Yi Shuang had also heard her fair share of cheesy pickup lines.

Yi Shuang grew used to her presence. In dungeons, she would also protect Fang Ge and help her clear them smoothly. When Fang Ge did not have enough points for a revival card, Yi Shuang would get nervous along with her.

She also grew used to Fang Ge relying on her in dungeons.

Of course, as far as feelings were concerned, she still had no intention of taking things any further.
And yet, that delicate balance was shattered the moment the dungeon came to an abrupt end.

The Thriller dungeons had vanished. She had a vague guess that Hua Suihe and Ye Susheng were the ones responsible.

The world returned to peace. The five-plus years that had passed felt like a long dream. Now that the nightmare had dispersed, people had gone back to their own lives.

It was only one day while exercising that it suddenly struck her: the world really was different now. She no longer needed to fight her way out of dungeons by the skin of her teeth, no longer needed to face the threat of death, no longer needed to maneuver through schemes and calculations.

Fang Ge no longer needed her, either.

It had been a week since the dungeons disappeared, and she had not seen Fang Ge in that entire week.

Before, she had treated dungeon clear rates as her goal in life. Now that the dungeons were gone, she had lost that goal as well.

Her past was a blank slate. With the dungeons gone and Fang Ge no longer appearing, it was as though the road ahead had turned blank, too.

Today was the tenth day since the dungeons disappeared.

Yi Shuang sat on a bench in the gym. She had just finished ten kilometers on the treadmill, but her mind was a mess, and even working out felt dull and pointless.

She picked up her phone and instinctively checked her contacts. Come to think of it, she did not have many friends. She had even pinned Fang Ge to the top. Their last chat had stopped ten days ago, with the final meme she had sent.

At least Fang Ge was not in danger. Her Moments were updating like normal; these past few days, she had been going out with friends.

Yi Shuang absentmindedly swiped to refresh, and by accident, she tapped into Hua Suihe’s chat window.

Their last message thread was Hua Suihe asking whether she still remembered her.

Yi Shuang stared at that line, and her heart suddenly sank a little. Then she tapped into Fang Ge’s chat window.

Yi Shuang: Are you busy? Do you still remember me?

The question looked strange no matter how she read it. She wanted to retract it, but then she saw the row of words at the top saying the other party was typing. She dismissed the thought and waited quietly for Fang Ge’s reply.

Fang Ge: Sister Shuang, if you didn’t contact me first, I was about to unilaterally cut ties with you.

Seeing that reply, Yi Shuang instead let out a breath of relief. Fang Ge still remembered her, and she had replied. Judging by her tone, she was as familiar with her as ever.

The two of them fell back into their old way of chatting. Yi Shuang kept waiting, waiting for Fang Ge to say, Let’s meet when we have time.

But she never did. After they had chatted for quite a while, Fang Ge seemed to be deliberately trying to end the conversation.

As if possessed, Yi Shuang took the initiative to ask her out and even called her. Fang Ge picked up very quickly. Yi Shuang composed herself, then asked, “Are you free to have dinner together?”

Fang Ge pondered for a moment, her tone carrying a hint of playfulness. “Hmm… are you asking me on a date?”

Yi Shuang’s left hand rested on the bench. Unconsciously, she curled her fingers and tapped her knuckles against it. She felt a little nervous, and a little guilty. “We haven’t seen each other in a long time. I thought we could catch up.”

She knew perfectly well that Fang Ge liked her. Now that Fang Ge was no longer taking the initiative to contact her, perhaps she was slowly letting go of those feelings.

But Yi Shuang was awful, wasn’t she? She was giving Fang Ge hope again.

But she did not want to lose Fang Ge. Maybe only as a friend, but her life was simply too dry and monotonous. Without Fang Ge beside her talking these past ten days, even the days had felt unbearably long.

What she was doing was despicable. If Fang Ge rejected her invitation, it would only be understandable.

Fang Ge agreed. “Sure. Are you free tonight? Let’s go tonight, then. Is Youmi Bar okay? I’m meeting some friends tonight too. You can all get to know each other.”

Her life was rich and colorful, and she had no shortage of friends. That much was obvious from her Moments.

The strange flicker of joy in Yi Shuang’s heart faded considerably.

“…Okay. See you tonight.”
