The system assigned me a mission: win over the male lead, Shen Zechuan.

Unfortunately, I had always been half a beat slower than everyone else. His other admirers had already tried every courtship trick in the book.

I couldn’t sweet-talk him, and I had no special talent that might catch his eye. Among his crowd of pursuers, I was so ordinary that I practically disappeared.

All I could do was persistently send him good-morning and good-night messages on WeChat.

He never replied. Not once.

After a month of pursuing him, I thought I had at least made myself familiar to him. But when I finally worked up the nerve to greet Shen Zechuan today, he looked at me like I was a stranger and walked past with a cool, distant expression.

It felt as though everything I had done that month had been for nothing.

Whenever I was unhappy, I craved snacks. So I sat there with an armful of them, munching away.

My phone vibrated.

The moment I opened it, I saw that familiar black profile picture.

S: “You’re so cute when you eat, baby. Slow down. Don’t choke.”

“That’s your fourth piece of chocolate. Are you in a bad mood?”

I ignored him and looked around my room.

Sure enough, I found another camera behind a flowerpot.

That made thirteen this month.

S: “So clever, baby.”

My phone vibrated again.

“Your face suddenly came so close just now. My heart is beating so fast. I want to see more. There’s another one on top of the wardrobe—take that one down too, baby.”

I was searching for something to stand on when another message arrived.

“The little stool is in the kitchen. You used it the last time you took down the kitchen camera.”

I pouted. “Please hide them lower next time. They’re really hard to reach.”

S instantly sent me a meme with a besotted expression.

“Even the way you frown when you’re angry is adorable. How can anyone be this cute?”

“I put the cameras higher so I can see your room better.”

“Have you forgotten? When you couldn’t find your butterfly hair clip last time, I was the one who told you where it was. You even said I was amazing.”

That did sound vaguely familiar.

I collapsed onto my bed. I couldn’t be bothered to take this one down.

Even if I did, another would only appear.

This stranger named S had shown up while I was pursuing Shen Zechuan.

At first, S kept complimenting my clothes and hair clips. I thought she wanted the same ones, so I very earnestly and helpfully sent her the links.

“I always buy my clothes from this shop. The quality is great, and the prices are really reasonable!”

“Thank you, baby, but I prefer the one you’re wearing. It smells like you.”

I assumed she liked my body wash, so I thoughtfully sent her a link to that too.

“You’re so adorable, darling,” came the reply.

I was certain the person on the other end was a polite, friendly girl who smelled sweet and felt soft. After that, whenever I found pretty clothes or hair accessories, I sent them to her. Sometimes we even joined group orders together.

“Baby, this dress is gorgeous, but it’s so expensive.”

I had barely sent the message when S transferred a hundred thousand yuan to me.

Stunned, I carefully counted the zeros.

S: “You have such good taste, baby. This dress would look perfect on you. Go buy it right now!”

I sent an emoticon. “◍⁰ᯅ⁰◍.ᐟ.ᐟ”

“Baby, you’re so rich! But I can’t accept this. It wouldn’t be right.”

S: “What’s wrong with it? My money is your money. Anything baby wants, baby can have >ᴗoಣ.”

The offer was terribly tempting, but my good upbringing won out, and I did not accept the transfer.

I thought that was the end of it.

The next day, the dress appeared outside my door in exquisite packaging. A note had been stuck to the box.

“For the prettiest baby in the world.”

At last, I sensed that something was off.

I had never given S my address.

But stranger things followed.

“Your outfit is so cute today, baby. That pink butterfly clip looks perfect on you.”

“You hardly ate any dinner. Are you trying to lose weight?”

“You talked to a boy today and smiled so happily. I’m so jealous.”

That was when I finally realized S had been following me and watching me all along.

He even had cameras inside my home.

And S was not, in fact, a sweet, soft girl.

S was a man.

I felt deceived.

He apologized over and over. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry! I couldn’t help myself, baby. You’re too cute. I feel awful whenever you’re out of my sight!”

I replied, “So you never seriously looked at any of the pretty dresses I recommended!”

S: “I did! I bought every single thing you sent me!”

He was clearly panicking.

A second later, he recorded a video for me.

It showed a huge walk-in closet filled with all the pretty little dresses I had recommended. A green one in the middle looked strangely familiar.

Wasn’t that the dress I had thrown away last week because I couldn’t wash out an oil stain?

S: “How could clothes baby has worn belong in the trash? I picked it up.”

Someone else might have been frightened.

But I was naturally slow to react, always half a beat behind. I knew everyone was different. Perhaps this stranger simply wanted a good friend too badly.

I typed, “You can tell me next time. You don’t have to sneak around.”

That sent him into a frenzy of excitement.

“You’re not scared, baby?”

“I knew it! Baby treats me better than anyone!”

After that, he grew bolder and bolder. His obsession with me seeped into every word.

“That lipstick looks beautiful on you today, baby. It makes me want to devour you.”

“Your new shampoo smells good too. Even more tempting than the last one.”

“You’re too cute, baby. Don’t look at other men. Will you look only at me?”

By the time I finally noticed what was happening, he had completely invaded my life.

And even now, I had never met S.

If only the aloof male lead, Shen Zechuan, were as easy to talk to.
