My Beautiful Roommate and the Dog - Chapter 2

An Chen didn’t like dogs.

So right now, I was terrified.

When I’d first found this little spitz, I’d specifically asked if he wanted to keep it.

His answer had been, “You’d be better off keeping me than a dog.”

Fortunately, once he saw clearly that I was a dog, he ignored me and went about his business.

He carried my body into the bedroom, changed my clothes, and wiped me clean with water.

I thought he would leave when he was finished.

But An Chen didn’t.

He held my stiff corpse and pressed his forehead to mine.

At the sight, my heart felt as though I’d swallowed green-plum juice—aching and swollen with sourness.

But what he did next left me too shocked for words.

Because he—

He kissed me on the lips!

Hold on. Was it normal for bros to kiss on the mouth?

And hadn’t he always kissed my cheek before?

My emotions were all over the place.

I consoled myself that grief had made him miss his target.

Then, in the next second, I saw him pull out his dagger.

“Woof, woof, woof!”

I yelped in terror and leaped up, scrambling onto the bed.

Don’t be stupid!

No matter how deep the brotherly love, he didn’t have to go that far!

An Chen cast me a chilly look, apparently deciding I was interrupting him, and tried to throw me out.

I clamped my teeth around his trouser leg and refused to let go.

He remained unmoved.

Then, in the middle of our struggle, the phone fell out of my little dog backpack.

He froze.

Crouching down, he picked up the phone that matched his own and asked in disbelief, “Did Chen Jiahe put this in your bag before he died?”

No. Chen Jiahe himself had put it there.

But no one would believe a dog had packed a phone into its own bag. I could only bark once in agreement.

Surprise flickered in An Chen’s eyes.

I seized my chance. From the low coffee table in the living room, I fetched a photo of my sister and me, then barked at him twice.

He stared blankly for a moment before asking uncertainly, “Chen Jiahe put his phone on you because he wanted you to help find his sister?”

That was my roommate of over a year, the man who shared my bed. He understood me at once.

Deeply gratified, I immediately put the matter of him kissing me on the mouth out of my mind.

After all, as he often said, what was wrong with a little kiss between good bros?

Was the mouth any different from anywhere else?

No!

An Chen knew about my family.

Our parents had died in a car accident during my first year of high school. Since then, my sister Chen Jiayun and I had only had each other.

A few days ago, I’d told him on the phone that my sister had gone to play at her best friend’s enormous villa and that I was a little jealous.

At the time, he had been leaning against the edge of a swimming pool, his half-wet golden hair spilling across his bare upper body. He looked like one of those breathtakingly beautiful mermaids from a fairy tale.

He glanced at me lazily, his long lashes curving at the perfect angle in the sunlight.

“You could come play at my family’s villa too.”

“Me? Better not.” I laughed. “I’ve already found a part-time job. I want to earn more living expenses over the break.”

Jiang City was small, with only a handful of villa developments.

An Chen packed with swift efficiency, and we soon set off.

His shoulders were broad and his legs long. I was merely a lame puppy. After two steps, I was already falling behind.

Wait for me, An Chen!

I shouted anxiously inside my head, afraid he would leave me.

He gave me an impatient look after I’d just fallen on my butt, then put me in his backpack and ordered, “Don’t make a sound, or I’ll toss you to the zombies.”

I obediently barked once.

Then I watched in shock as An Chen efficiently broke the zombies’ limbs and severed their heads.

Oh my God!

Was this really the same An Chen I knew—the one so delicate he couldn’t take care of himself?

Back at school, his hands would ache if he typed for too long, so I had to massage them. If he walked too far, his legs would hurt, so I had to carry him. Even when he had a fever and needed cold medicine, he would whine endlessly until I fed it to him one mouthful at a time.

My apologies—I hadn’t realized I was dealing with such a badass!

An Chen put me in the SUV he’d driven over. When I turned to look, I saw supplies piled across both the back seat and the trunk.

“Zombies move more slowly after dark. We’ll leave then.”

After saying this, he suddenly laughed.

“I must be losing my mind, explaining all this to a stupid dog.”

An Chen had always called me stupid when I was human too. I believed anything people told me and was always getting tricked into doing troublesome jobs no one else wanted.

Now that I was a dog, he still wouldn’t let up.

Angry, I bared my teeth at him. He smacked me right on the forehead.

Waaah.

Where was the animal protection society?

I wanted to file a complaint!

After dark, I was still agonizing over how to tell him my sister’s address.

To my surprise, he called her directly.

“Send me your address. I’m coming to find you.”

Wait, what?

Since when did he have my sister’s contact information?

I barked frantically beside him until An Chen, annoyed, grabbed my muzzle shut with one hand.

“Mm. I’ll be careful.”

I didn’t know what she said on the other end, but An Chen abruptly fell silent. “I’m sorry. By the time I arrived, he was already…”

After the call ended, An Chen began crying soundlessly again.

His skin was pale, and the corners of his eyes reddened easily.

The sight made my heart ache so badly I wanted to turn into a spirit on the spot and tell him:

Don’t cry. I’m not dead. I just turned into a dog!
