Zombies moved sluggishly at night.

Along the way, An Chen rescued a man.

The man said a broadcast had mentioned a safe base called White Bird. He was headed there now and urged us to travel together so we could look out for one another.

An Chen refused and drove toward the villa district instead.

When we finally arrived, An Chen cleared the wandering zombies from the entrance and signaled the girls.

The two of them furtively passed a short ladder over the barricaded gate.

The instant we got inside, I jumped impatiently from the backpack. I sniffed around my sister’s feet and circled her several times.

Only after confirming she was all right did I breathe a sigh of relief.

My sister’s eyes were swollen. “An-ge, is my brother really gone…?”

An Chen gave an almost inaudible hum of assent.

She broke down completely. Scalding tears rolled down her cheeks and splashed onto the floor.

“It’s all my fault. If I hadn’t come out here to have fun, if I’d gone home to find him sooner, maybe this wouldn’t have happened…”

Lin Wanwan comforted her. “Yun, this isn’t your fault.”

Once they had barely managed to compose themselves, the girls explained their situation.

As soon as the zombie outbreak began, they had barricaded the gate. Thinking ahead, they had also charged every electronic device to full capacity. Neither of them liked going out, and the villa had plenty of food and snacks.

“I called my brother over and over, but he didn’t answer. Later, when we realized zombies were very sensitive to sound, I switched to texting.”

My sister wiped her tears. “An-ge, what made you think of coming to find us?”

An Chen glanced at me, where I sat on the sofa, then told them how I’d put my phone into the puppy’s backpack before I died.

“Chen Jiahe was worried about you. I came to carry out his last wish and take you somewhere safe.”

His voice was quiet, but the mood in the room grew even heavier.

He took the dead phone out of his bag. “Charge it first. Maybe he left something on it that he wanted to say.”

Lin Wanwan nodded. “I’ll get a power bank.”

Only An Chen and my sister remained in the living room.

“An-ge,” my sister said suddenly.

Her tear-damp eyes stared straight at him.

Something about the atmosphere felt wrong.

Then I remembered that the two of them had exchanged contact information behind my back. I had the sense that some answer was about to reveal itself.

To be honest, An Chen was dependable. If my sister wanted him, it wasn’t exactly as if some pig had rooted up my precious cabbage.

So why did my chest feel so blocked and unsettled?

My sister sniffed. “An-ge, I know it’s a little late now, but I still want to ask. Do you like my brother…?”

I froze mid-lament.

Huh???

“I…” An Chen began, his voice hoarse.

“The phone isn’t broken. I tried it, and it charges.”

Lin Wanwan’s voice suddenly rang out.

She came over carrying three boxes of self-heating hot pot and a bottle of mineral water, oblivious to everything as she told them, “It’s getting late. Let’s all eat something and rest.”

The two of them silently opened the packages.

I was left scratching my ears and cheeks in frustration.

Did he like me or not?

Say something, An Chen!

Could all that brotherhood between us—the kind that moved heaven and earth—have been fake?

Had he also lied when he said it was normal for us to help each other out?

My brain felt overloaded.

I couldn’t think at all.

After dinner, my sister fed me a sausage and some leftover rice.

An Chen went back to his room, saying he would shower first. He told the girls to count all the supplies and make a list so we could leave for the base the following night.

Working my little short legs, I huffed and puffed my way upstairs behind him.

An Chen sat beside the bed holding my phone, looking at something.

I tried my hardest to climb onto him, then poked my doggy head out through the collar of his shirt.

An Chen plucked me out several times.

I persisted.

Finally, he lost patience and threw me straight out the door.

What a petty jerk!

It was my phone. Why couldn’t I look at it?

I curled into a pitiful ball outside the door and planned to sneak a look after he fell asleep.

In the middle of the night, I crept into An Chen’s room like a thief.

He had finished his shower and completely regained his usual air of a pampered young master.

His golden hair spilled loosely around him. Darkness blurred his finely sculpted features, and together with the silk sheets, he looked like a figure straight out of a medieval oil painting.

Back when he used to say he was afraid of the dark and share my bed, I would secretly play with his hair every time.

Sometimes I accidentally rolled onto it by morning. He would get angry, and I had to coax him for ages before he forgave me.

Ugh. I had to stop reminiscing.

It felt weird.

I hurried to the phone beside his pillow and tapped in the password with my paw pads.

I had barely unlocked it—before I could celebrate for even a second—the back of my neck suddenly went cold.

Then my whole body rose into the air.

An Chen looked thoroughly annoyed. “Who gave you permission to enter my room, let alone climb onto my bed?”

He was a clean freak, and he didn’t like dogs.

I didn’t even get the chance to yelp before he threw me out again.

Stupid An Chen!

If only he could sleep through the night, I could use my little dog paws to send him a message and tell him—I wasn’t dead. I’d just turned into a dog.

I was furious.

I ignored him for three days straight.

Of course, he didn’t spare me so much as a glance either.
