Before I could quit, however, I still had those last two cases to finish.

Today’s client was a muscular man.

After getting the basic information, I asked casually,

“Your younger brother?”

He shook his head.

“My boyfriend.”

I glanced at the information. The spirit he wanted me to call was male too.

Ah. One of my people.

I looked at him in confusion.

“Shouldn’t your boyfriend be bound to you by a contract? How did you lose track of him?”

The man pressed his lips together.

“I won’t agree to a contract, and he refuses to leave.”

I understood. No one entered a ghost marriage unless they had no other choice.

Once they did, neither partner could go on being a normal human or a normal ghost.

But his boyfriend could not bear to leave him and would rather linger in this world than move on.

Now the two of them were having a spat.

With the confidence of someone who had been there before, I waved a hand.

“Don’t worry. I’ll bring him back, and the two of you can talk it out.”

The man nodded.

I arranged my tools and began the summoning ritual.

After some time, a sinister chill crept over me.

Something icy brushed the back of my hand.

“Priest, you’re awfully handsome.”

Without expression, I warned him,

“You’d better let go.”

The young ghost arched a brow and reached for my face.

Unable to watch what was about to happen, I closed my eyes.

With a tremendous crash, the ghost went flying.

Xue Man pinned him to the ground and pounded him with blow after blow.

“How dare you touch my man? Are you looking to die?”

The ghost covered his head and begged for mercy.

“Bro! Bro, I was joking! I didn’t know he was your man!”

Only after Xue Man had worked out his anger did he release him.

Even then, he had to correct the ghost.

“What you should say is: *I* am his man.”

I sighed helplessly. My wife would not accept the slightest disadvantage, not even a verbal one.

Off to the side, the muscular man stared at the crater that had inexplicably appeared in the ground.

“Is he… all right?”

I laughed awkwardly, belatedly remembering that the ghost was our target.

The man did not press the issue. He put on the talisman I gave him and turned toward the young ghost.

“Xiao Zhen, come talk to me properly.”

Xue Man and I exchanged a glance and quietly moved away to give them some privacy.

From a distance, I saw Xiao Zhen start crying. At one point, he became so worked up that he pointed at us.

I blinked and asked Xue Man,

“What is he saying?”

Xue Man replied offhandedly,

“Why does he get to stay when I don’t?”

I froze, then realized Xiao Zhen was talking about Xue Man.

Xiao Zhen wanted to remain with his lover, but the muscular man wanted him to be reborn and begin a new life.

Who could say what would happen after reincarnation?

Perhaps your lover would be reborn while you grew old waiting.

If Xue Man reincarnated, would I never have him again?

He must have noticed me drifting off, because he pinched me.

“My seventh day after death passed ages ago. Just accept that I’ll haunt you for the rest of your life.”

In truth, once he accumulated enough merit, he would have another chance.

Xue Man did not tell me, and I pretended not to know. Behind his back, I donated money to build merit for him.

Being human was more interesting, after all.

Xue Man should not be bound to me.

I let none of that show. Instead, I wrapped an arm around his waist and declared dramatically,

“Hubby, one lifetime isn’t enough. I want to cling to you through every life to come.”

Xue Man called me disgusting, but the corners of his mouth quietly curved upward.

With a huff, he turned and planted a swift kiss on my lips.

Then, with great dignity, he said, “On the Ghost Festival, I’ll allow you to be a little wild.”

On the Ghost Festival, the gates of the underworld opened and Xue Man’s ghostly energy reached its peak, allowing him to take solid form.

Because he was bound to me in marriage, he could even move about during the day.

In other words, I would get to hold my wife for a full twenty-four hours.

Excited, I puckered up and leaned in for another kiss.

Xue Man slapped me away.

“Get lost.”
