My Husband Is a Sickly Beauty NPC in a Horror Game - Chapter 1
Chapter 1
That kick from Shen Yan was probably going to leave my butt bruised for three days.
The culprit was still glaring at me, his face livid.
The kick I had just returned had taken every ounce of strength I had.
Dizzy and seeing stars, I braced myself against the edge of the bed and tried to catch my breath.
“What the hell was that thing? Is it Halloween already?”
“No, wait, isn’t it summer? Is the school doing some kind of costume event?”
Before Shen Yan could answer, the Bullet Screen in front of my eyes informed me.
[It’s the apocalypse, bro. You’re still thinking about Halloween?]
[What kind of makeup can paint half your head clean off?]
[The male lead’s face has gone white with anger.]
[So heartless. The male lead risked his life to come save him, and not only does he not thank him, he actually dares to kick him back.]
[What can you do? This guy is the male lead’s early-stage white moonlight, after all.]
The apocalypse?
White moonlight?
Holy shit!!
Shen Yan’s expression, which had been looking at me like I was an idiot, suddenly froze. He raised a hand, pinched my face, and shook it back and forth.
“Ye Heng, what’s wrong with you? Did getting kicked make you stupid?”
I slapped his hand away.
“You’re the stupid one.”
He glanced up at the air.
“Then why do your eyes keep rolling upward?”
I clicked my tongue and didn’t tell him I could see strange words scrolling above my head.
After all, I still didn’t know whether what they were saying was true.
I sighed and patted his arm.
“Anyway, thanks for saving me.”
“Even if I don’t exactly approve of the method.”
The noises outside rose and fell one after another-chaotic footsteps, objects smashing into things, wails and screams.
Only then did they belatedly register in my mind.
My chest tightened. I hurried to the balcony and looked down.
The ground below was in utter chaos. Severed limbs and torn bodies were everywhere, and blood had dyed the pavement black.
From the floors above and below, living people and dead ones kept falling.
Bodies struck the concrete with dull, heavy thuds.
A chill ran through me. I couldn’t hold back a few dry heaves, and it felt as if needles were stabbing through my brain.
A warm hand covered my forehead from behind, blocking my eyes at the same time.
Shen Yan stood beside me, his tall frame shielding the balcony and enveloping me in his shadow.
“Do you have a fever? Then stop looking. Go back and lie down.”
He helped me back to the bed.
With a bitter smile, I said, “Why did you come here just to get yourself killed? I can barely take two steps right now. I’ll only drag you down. Besides, isn’t your dorm downstairs? Why are you here?”
Shen Yan fell silent.
The Bullet Screen, however, became lively.
[Because he likes you, you block of wood.]
[Such a pity. Ye Heng never knew Shen Yan liked him, even up until his death. He thought Shen Yan was his archenemy.]
[What do you do when the person you like keeps thinking you’re trying to hurt him?]
[When does Ye Heng die? I’m really looking forward to seeing the male lead become a cold, brutal war machine after his white moonlight dies.]
[Cherish the male lead while he still has some human warmth left.]
[There’s a substitute romance arc later too. Our adorable little bottom will appear and heal the male lead.]
[To the person above: actually, it isn’t healing.]
Seeing all that, I closed my eyes.
And I fell silent too.
What the hell?
Shen Yan is the male lead?
He likes me?
And I have to die??
I thought back on everything between Shen Yan and me, from when we first met in middle school until now.
We couldn’t stand the sight of each other. We were like fire and water.
He made trouble for me, and I made trouble for him.
I couldn’t say I’d felt any stirrings of affection.
Murderous intent, on the other hand, stirred pretty often.
But this time, he’d gone out of his way to save my worthless life.
That meant I had to rethink things.
Shit!
Who had time to think about that? The real question was how I was supposed to stay alive!
The broadcast suddenly crackled to life.
“Students, please hide yourselves and do not run around. Wait for rescue!”
The announcement repeated three times.
I opened my feverish eyes and looked at Shen Yan’s back out on the balcony.
The wind carried the reek of blood, crashing against him before scattering and drifting toward me.
The cigarette between Shen Yan’s fingers flickered in the dark.
His back was straight, one hand in his pocket, his head slightly lowered as he looked down at the ground below.
His whole presence felt heavy.
I spoke through my dry, hoarse throat.
“Why are you still watching? Doesn’t it make you sick?”
Shen Yan didn’t turn around. There was a note of inquiry in his voice.
“I’ve noticed their hearing is more sensitive than their vision. Every time, they go for whoever is screaming the loudest first.”
In my heart, I gave him a big thumbs-up.
As expected of the male lead. His first instinct was to study and observe.
He could watch his own kind die without so much as a change in expression, like it had nothing to do with him.
My head hurt like hell, and I passed out again.
I didn’t know how long it had been before I was jolted awake by a dream of a zombie right in my face.
I was drenched in cold sweat, but my body felt a lot lighter.
Shen Yan had dug out my roommate’s treasured pickled-pepper instant noodles and made me a pack.
“There isn’t much food in your dorm. We won’t last two days.”
I held the noodles and slurped them down.
“Who knows when rescue will come.”
The Bullet Screen started flooding again.
[There is no rescue. The outside world has completely collapsed.]
[Once they run out of food, they’ll know it’s time to leave.]
[They need to go to B City. A human base will be established there. The terrain is rugged, so it’ll be easy to defend.]
[They should wait until the male lead awakens his ability before leaving. Leaving now is no different from suicide, especially with that white moonlight deadweight in tow.]
[Too bad this white moonlight has no ability and is doomed to die. Otherwise, I’d actually want him to live, just so the male lead has something to hold on to in this world.]
[Wouldn’t that turn it into a romance subplot? Boring. I’m here to watch the male lead level up and fight monsters, not watch him fall in love.]
I finished the noodle broth along with the comments before suddenly remembering.
“Why aren’t you eating?”
Shen Yan sat across from me, chin propped on one hand, staring straight at my mouth, which had been reddened by the spice.
“I’m not hungry.”
I figured he was probably trying to save food, and for a moment, I felt a little guilty.
“Stop pretending. You’re so tempted you’re swallowing your drool.”
I rummaged through the bed and tossed him a few bags of snacks.
“Put something in your stomach.”
Shen Yan took them, tore open a Qinzuishao spicy strip snack, and swallowed it in one bite.
“In a bit, I want to go out and check the other dorms for food.”
I thought about it.
“Yesterday, I saw the dorm across from us make a supply run to the supermarket. They came back with a bunch of bags, lots of food.”
“Then I’ll go get it.”
“But they didn’t open the door.”
“As long as it isn’t deadbolted, I can use a card to push the latch open through the gap.”
“Okay.” Then something suddenly occurred to me. “But there’s another problem.”
“What?”
“Every time this dorm room door opens or closes, it sounds like a female ghost shrieking. The floors above and below can both hear it.”
“…”
