Chapter 3

Late that night, Shen Yan and Zhou Bin were both worn out and needed sleep to recover their strength.

I’d slept for a full day and night, so I was still in decent shape and took on the responsibility of keeping watch.

Shen Yan found the cleanest-looking lower bunk and lay down.

We didn’t dare turn on the lights in the dorm, afraid it would attract zombies.

By the dim glow filtering in, I studied Shen Yan.

This mysterious male lead.

He really did have all the makings of one.

Smart, handsome, and in great shape.

Ever since he was little, people who liked him had come in droves.

My reason for hating him was simple, too.

The girl I liked in middle school liked him.

After I realized in high school that I seemed to be gay, the boy I liked liked him too.

He drifted through my entire world like some elusive ghost, seducing away every single person I ever had a crush on, which was why I was still tragically single to this day.

To be honest, I wasn’t bad-looking myself. I could count as kind of handsome.

But standing next to Shen Yan, I just didn’t measure up.

That said, there had been a period when I’d had a bit of a crush on him too.

After all, he really was handsome.

Later, I overheard him rejecting another guy by saying he didn’t like men.

So I gave up-and got even angrier.

How could a straight guy keep cutting off a gay guy’s romantic prospects?

Now that I knew he was the male lead, I understood.

Sigh! The protagonist halo, right?

I had to get in on that.

As my thoughts wandered, I put my head down on the desk and dozed for a while.

When I opened my eyes again, it was already bright outside.

Shen Yan and Zhou Bin still hadn’t woken up.

The Bullet Screen appeared again.

[Is the male lead about to awaken his ability?]

[I think it’s metal-type.]

[Isn’t it dual abilities?]

[Zhou Bin awakened too. I remember his is spatial-type. He can store supplies.]

[Our white moonlight has nothing. How pitiful.]

So pitiful.

Pitiful me still had to wait on two people with high fevers.

I fed them water and wiped away their sweat.

By the time I was done fussing over them, the sky was almost dark again.

Only then did the two of them finally wake, groggy and slow.

The moment Shen Yan opened his eyes, he stared blankly into space.

“I feel like there’s some kind of extra energy inside me.”

Zhou Bin let out a startled cry.

“What is this? Why does it feel like there’s a room in my head?”

I pretended I knew nothing and spouted nonsense.

“Zombies exist now, so abilities should be normal too, right? Hurry up and see if you can use them.”

I watched the two of them mess around for a while.

Zhou Bin made things disappear into thin air.

Shen Yan raised his hand, and an iron bed almost smashed me to death.

After playing around for half the day, Zhou Bin went to the bathroom.

Shen Yan’s fingers twitched slightly, and I heard the sound of my zipper sliding down.

I clapped a hand over my crotch.

“What the hell are you doing?”

Shen Yan smiled innocently. “Testing how fine my control is.”

I flipped him off. “Put away those filthy thoughts of yours!”

Shen Yan tapped his fingers lightly on the desk, wearing a faint, unreadable smile. In a casual tone, he said, “Ye Heng, the world has already ended. Don’t you think it’d be a huge loss if we never even dated anyone?”

I was fiddling with my phone that had lost internet access and nodded perfunctorily.

“Yeah. I’m about to reincarnate clean and pure with my virginity intact.”

“How about dating someone?”

“Who? A zombie?”

Shen Yan leaned forward, hooked a finger under my chin, and lifted my face.

“I mean the two of us. I’ll protect you from now on.”

I curled my lips and raised a brow. “Using a favor to force repayment?”

Shen Yan frowned slightly. “That’s not what I meant.”

“You saved me, and now you have an ability. You’ll probably have to keep saving me from now on too, so I’m supposed to trade my body for your protection?”

The Bullet Screen started speaking up for Shen Yan.

[This supporting male character really doesn’t know what’s good for him.]

[Our male lead is handsome and strong. Being with him would be a huge win for him, and he still dares to use that tone?]

[If he doesn’t want him, give him to me. I want to touch those abs every day!]

[I think Ye Heng is afraid the relationship won’t be equal if they get together. After all, when you’re the weaker party, being a friend and being a lover are two completely different things.]

That last one had nailed it.

Although I wanted to cling to the male lead’s thigh, I didn’t want to become an accessory or a body he had a claim on.

In the short term, sure, I wouldn’t be losing out.

But human society had collapsed. The morality and humanity built by a society ruled by law would slowly disappear.

As a lover with no ability, I would very easily end up abandoned and looked down on.

I could be with him.

And being with him really wouldn’t be a loss for me.

I had definitely lusted after that face and body before.

But it couldn’t be like this-casual, offhand, and led entirely by him.

Shen Yan withdrew his hand.

“You misunderstood. If now isn’t the right time, I won’t bring it up. But that really isn’t what I meant.”

Zhou Bin came out of the bathroom and heard the last half of that sentence.

“What isn’t what you meant? What are you two talking about?”

I changed the subject.

“Pack up anything useful. We need to leave.”

“Where are we going?”

“B City. My phone suddenly got signal for two seconds just now, and I saw someone say they’re building a human base over there.”

I walked past Shen Yan, but he caught my wrist. Sitting there, he lifted his head to look at me, a trace of scrutiny in his eyes.

“Ye Heng, since both of us awakened abilities after having high fevers, did you feel anything strange after your fever yesterday?”

I wanted to say no, and that I wouldn’t in the future either.

Because the Bullet Screen had spoiled that I wouldn’t have any abilities.

But then it suddenly occurred to me that the Bullet Screen had appeared when I was having a fever.

Could it be…

Was my ability seeing the Bullet Screen?

Predicting the future?

Talking to people from another world?

I suppressed the excitement in my heart and shook my head.

“All I can say is, I’m still just an ordinary mortal.”
