When my eyes left his face and settled, quite openly, on the face of the girl beside him, they both froze.

They couldn’t understand it. I’d stormed over to confront him, jabbed a livestock prod into him—and then abruptly gone quiet, staring nonstop at his girlfriend.

He looked at me, then at her.

Apparently, he felt obliged to say something.

“Jun Ziyu, you…”

The moment he opened his mouth, I pressed the switch.

Current shot through the tip of the prod. His whole body jerked.

“Aah!” he screamed.

What an ugly noise.

I kept the switch down.

The shocks drove him to his knees, folded down in a full prostration.

His girlfriend was aghast.

Terrified as she was of an “evil force” like me, she rushed to his side. “Ma Zhiming, are you okay?”

I’d shocked Ma Zhiming into tears. He couldn’t speak.

I put away the prod and looked at the girl. “Who are you to him?”

She looked up at me apprehensively.

That face…

I silently sucked in a breath.

How could someone look so exactly, so completely like my type?

As though she’d been born specifically for me.

“I-I’m his girlfriend…” she said nervously.

“How long have you been together?”

“Three—no, four years…”

“Your accent isn’t local.”

“I’m not from here…”

“What’s your name?”

She opened her mouth to answer automatically, then stopped.

At last, she’d realized she didn’t actually have to be so obedient.

“I… Why should I tell you?”

“Do you know why I shocked him?” I asked, smiling.

She glanced down at Ma Zhiming, embarrassed. “I know… He… he spread sexual rumors about you.”

“Then do you know I can have him locked up for a few days for that?”

Her eyes widened.

She wanted to plead for Ma Zhiming, but couldn’t get the words out.

She knew he’d gone too far, too.

I glanced at the overturned lunchbox.

“…You came all this way to bring him lunch?”

She looked back at the food scattered across the floor, dismay crossing her face.

I could see at least three or four dishes.

That little lunchbox had been packed full of her earnest affection.

Such a lovely girl.

Ma Zhiming didn’t deserve her.

I hauled him up. “Clean up the floor,” I told her. “I’m taking him to the police station.”

She stared.

“Huh?”

As I marched Ma Zhiming out, I looked back at her. “You still haven’t told me your name. If you won’t tell me now, you’ll have to when you come to the station to get him out.”

Her lips parted, but she still couldn’t say it.

I smiled, turned, and marched Ma Zhiming away.
