Yuan Ling took me back to her place.

She locked me in with a bunch of strange, clearly venomous reptile pets.

Then, she started threatening me.

“I don’t care who you are, you’d better be smart and leave Qin Zhi, or else I’ll…”

She opened one of the reptile tanks and gave me a fierce glare.

In reality, however, those pets of hers didn’t even dare to look me in the eye.

They didn’t even have spiritual roots!

Seeing that I wasn’t the least bit afraid, Yuan Ling flew into a rage.

She planted her hands on her hips. “Heh, playing hard to get? Fine, I’ll have to use some tougher methods on you.”

Ten minutes later.

She shoved a check for five million into my hand. “Take this money and leave my Brother immediately!”

I felt a bit depressed. “Why are you just like Qin Zhi? Why do you both love giving people five-million-dollar checks? Besides, I’m not with him for his money.”

Yuan Ling covered her ears, looking like she wouldn’t listen to a word I said.

“I’m not listening, I’m not listening! Don’t even dream of winning my Brother’s heart!

“He already has someone he likes-no, a snake he likes! He’s been waiting for her for seven years, do you understand?!

“She’s the snake who saved his life. They are a match made in heaven! As for us, humans and demons walk different paths!”

Yuan Ling’s words made me freeze instantly.

“What did you say…?”

My heart began to race wildly.

Involuntarily, my mind flashed back to seven years ago, to the big black snake I had saved.

Seven years ago.

I had been kicked out of the house because I’d secretly eaten the chocolate my father had been saving for three months.

He told me to get lost and never come back.

Fine, I’d get lost.

Hmph.

I slithered through the grass, heading aimlessly in one direction.

Before I knew it, I had reached the streets where humans lived.

I thought I would lead a happy life scavenging for scraps, but it turned out I was too cowardly.

I didn’t dare steal this or that.

After three days without food or water, I was truly about to starve to death.

My head was spinning.

I was about to pass out.

I collapsed in a puddle, my life force fading.

Just as I felt my soul leaving my body to go find my ancestors in the Great Beyond, I saw a grilled sausage waving in front of me.

I swallowed hard.

I snapped awake instantly and took a bite.

It was delicious!

A warmth spread through my stomach, and I felt myself come back to life immediately!

Only after finishing the entire sausage did I notice the massive black snake in front of me.

His eyes were golden, and his gaze was cold-cold enough to freeze a snake solid.

I pulled my neck back. “Thank you for the food…”

He narrowed his eyes. “I only intended to give you one bite, but who knew…”

My father always said that if you’ve done something guilty, you should change the subject immediately.

So, I reached out my tail to shake hands with him. “Hello, nice to meet you. My name is…”

This trick actually worked.

He lifted his chin arrogantly, his voice devoid of emotion. “I know your name.”

My eyes widened. “Huh? How do you know?”

He used his tail to sweep away the food crumbs lingering near my mouth. “You’re called Gluttonous Snake.”

I rolled around on the ground. “You’re the Gluttonous Snake!! I have a name, it’s Xiao Yu!”

“Don’t be mad. I’ll go steal something delicious to repay you in a bit! What’s your name?”

He turned away expressionlessly. “I don’t have a name.”

I was confused. “Why don’t you have a name? My mother gave me mine.”

“I don’t have a mother.”

As soon as he said that, I felt so guilty I wanted to slap myself.

Oh my god, how could I poke at someone’s wounds like that!

“I’m sorry… I…”

“It doesn’t matter. She left not long after I was born. I don’t care anymore.

“Let’s go. Weren’t you going to take me to find food? Lead the way.”
