My Wife Got Better. My Life Got Worse. - Chapter 2
Wang’s eyes went wide.
I rubbed my brow. “Don’t make me say it twice.”
Ten minutes later, I was at a beauty clinic, receiving the full range of treatments.
On my way out, I noticed that the second floor also offered intimate grooming for men.
I remembered something I’d overheard during my treatment: “If a woman loses interest, chances are her man’s not up to the job.” Calmly, I went upstairs.
Not because I thought I wasn’t up to the job. Being number one was simply my guiding principle in life.
By the time the whole treatment was finished, it was afternoon.
Perfect. I bought a bouquet of my wife’s favorite strawberry almond cookies and went to pick her up from work.
Before the car even reached her, I spotted her standing at the roadside with her handbag, lost in thought.
I couldn’t stop myself smiling. “Wang, you know how adorable my wife is, right?”
Wang’s back stiffened. He pretended to be very busy and didn’t answer.
Then I stopped smiling.
Up ahead, a man in a black motorcycle jacket pulled up in front of my wife, took off his helmet, and raked a hand through his hair as he said something to her.
She burst out laughing.
My fist clenched. Bastard! What was he showing off in front of my wife for?
I checked the mirror.
Hair in place. Suit immaculate. Good. I got out and strode over.
“Wen Ling.”
That’s my wife’s name. Beautiful, isn’t it?
In public, I liked saying every syllable clearly. It was a private little pleasure of mine.
Her eyes seemed to brighten when she saw me. But then she glanced into empty air, and the light in them went out. Her smile faded too.
Was she upset because I was five minutes late? Or… had I come at a bad time?
I stopped beside her and looked down my nose at Zhou Ran.
He looked back. I caught the challenge in his eyes immediately.
I narrowed mine.
Then he turned to my wife and put on a sugary voice. “Who’s this, Wen Ling? He’s so scary.”
The conniving little snake. His voice was even sweeter than mine!
I stepped forward, blocking his covetous view of my wife.
“I’m her legal husband.”
Zhou Ran blinked, then covered his nose. “Oh, hello, Uncle.
“You look so much older than her.”
The bastard was trying to provoke me!
But I wasn’t falling for it.
I adjusted my cuff and smiled. “Building a hundred-billion-yuan fortune takes time. Naturally, someone with new money wouldn’t understand.”
Zhou Ran looked innocent. “Does having money make you young again?
“I’ve heard men turn sixty as soon as they’re past twenty-five. I’m too young to know. How’s it treating you, Uncle?”
My expression cooled. Then I smiled. “Eager to find out?
“Worried you won’t live to twenty-five?”
Zhou Ran looked at me, and his eyes suddenly reddened. “Wen Ling, has Uncle got the wrong idea?
“I didn’t mean anything. I just saw that it was hard to get a taxi and nobody had come to pick you up, so I offered to take you home…”
I laughed. “Am I nobody?”
“But a decent husband wouldn’t keep her waiting.”
“And who would qualify? A man who can’t even afford a mere eight-million-yuan Maybach?”
“Wen Ling, is Uncle making fun of me for being poor…?”
“Enough!” My wife grabbed my arm.
I shot Zhou Ran a smug glance. I knew she would defend me.
“Lu Shiyan, he’s just the new guy at the company. Why are you bullying him?”
It felt as if an arrow had struck me in the chest. I froze, staring at her hand in disbelief.
From last night until now—4,358 whole minutes—this was the first time she’d touched me of her own accord. And it was to defend another man?
Was she punishing me like this just because I was five minutes late?
Of course. She loved me. The deeper the love, the harsher the reprimand.
“I’m sorry,” I said gravely. “I raised my voice.
“I wasn’t calling him poor. I was thinking about the ride. You can’t watch shows or scroll through videos on a motorcycle, but you can in a Maybach.
“I promise I’ll be here early every day from tomorrow on, waiting for you to finish work.”
She looked up at me, doubt clouding her eyes.
I understood. Bending down, I offered, “Left or right? Or both?”
But she looked into empty air, more bewildered than ever.
After a long moment, she said, “Lu Shiyan, are you doing this because you want to, or because you’re being—”
“Sir!” Wang came running over. “Your Miss Fu is at the office. She says she needs to see you. It’s desperately urgent!”
I saw something tremble in my wife’s eyes.
