Chapter 1

“Honey, what are you thinking about?”

My wife Rong Yu’s voice pulled me back from my thoughts.

I looked at him on instinct.

Rong Yu was half a head taller than me, and honestly, he really didn’t look like a stay-at-home househusband Beta. The only thing on him that made the role remotely convincing was the floral apron he was wearing.

At that moment, his hands were unconsciously clasped together, betraying a hint of nerves. Above them was a face that matched his gentle voice perfectly. His too-long bangs had been pinned to one side with an orange hair clip, revealing soft, delicate brows and eyes.

Just like my coworker had said.

He was a Beta who looked nothing like a Beta.

But that wasn’t important.

What mattered was the way my coworker had reacted when he saw Rong Yu at the department dinner tonight.

“Whoa, Zhou Ci, is this your wife? I had no idea you were hiding such a pretty wife at home. Too bad he’s a Beta…”

I couldn’t really make out what came after that.

The words “I had no idea” stabbed deep into my alcohol-numbed brain.

Even the weight of the oversized black-rimmed glasses on the bridge of my nose felt especially pronounced.

I couldn’t be bothered with him. I took off my glasses, pressed between my brows, and gave him only a perfunctory smile.

By then, Rong Yu seemed to have grown impatient from waiting. He walked over and called, “Honey.”

“Mm.”

I answered vaguely.

I had no intention whatsoever of introducing Rong Yu to anyone else.

Rong Yu didn’t seem to mind. No, maybe he did.

He turned his head and met my coworker’s stunned gaze. Then he placed a hand on my shoulder and leaned his body against mine, asking softly, “Honey, who’s this?”

I was just about to answer when, out of the corner of my eye, I noticed the way my coworker was staring fixedly at me. He was probably thinking the same thing most people did after seeing us together in person-that I didn’t deserve Rong Yu standing beside me.

The thought instantly put me in a bad mood, and I lost any desire to make a proper introduction. I brushed it off with a casual, “A coworker.”

Then I walked straight toward the exit, without the slightest intention of saying goodbye, and said to Rong Yu, “Let’s go home.”

Rong Yu, however, was very well-mannered.

He quickly caught my hand and asked in a low voice, “Wait, honey. Aren’t you going to say something to your coworker?”

I instinctively glanced toward my coworker, but Rong Yu’s figure happened to block my line of sight perfectly. I couldn’t see a thing.

Rong Yu tilted his head with a smile, as if he hadn’t noticed anything at all. “Honey?”

Me: …

Weren’t you the one who wanted me to say something to him?

Then move aside, why don’t you?

The alcohol had slowed my thoughts to a crawl.

Forget it, I thought. It wasn’t anything important anyway.

So I said, “It’s fine. We’re not close.”

Only then did Rong Yu seem to receive a satisfactory answer.

He pressed his lips together and smiled shyly, then slipped his arm through mine again. His cool body temperature came through the contact, and the scent of pomegranate body wash drifted down with the wind. Touch and smell worked together in perfect tandem, making me dizzy, dazed, and entranced before I knew it.

In the very end, all I could hear was my wife’s usual gentle, obedient voice.

In a cheerful tone, he said, “Okay, honey.”
