Chapter 67

“What’s going on? What’s going on?” Ying Cheng asked, his gossipy nature getting the better of him. He quickly leaned in and saw an extra person in the classroom, sitting at a desk. Their homeroom teacher was standing beside the person, speaking in a gentle, kindly tone.

Because the teacher’s body was partially blocking the view, Ying Cheng couldn’t tell who it was.

He instinctively shifted to the side to get a better look.

“Holy crap…”

From the new angle, Ying Cheng saw clearly, and he was stunned. He reached back and grabbed Yan Jinge, pulling him over. “Is it just me, or does that guy look exactly like Bai Cheng?”

Yan Jinge glanced over. “It is him.”

Images of Bai Cheng giving Yan Jinge milk tea immediately flashed through Ying Cheng’s mind.

He turned around, eyeing Yan Jinge with suspicion.

Ying Cheng desperately wanted to ask if Yan Jinge knew something, but with so many people around watching the spectacle, he was afraid of being overheard. He had to force the words back down, but then he noticed a very important detail.

“Crap!” Ying Cheng cursed again. “Bai Cheng is sitting in my seat!!!”

The surrounding classmates all looked over with sympathetic eyes.

Perhaps because the commotion outside was too loud, the homeroom teacher standing by Bai Cheng’s desk turned around. With a beaming smile, she waved them in. “What are you all crowding outside for? Come in, come in. Everyone, this is our new classmate, Bai Cheng. You should all know him already, right? Bai Cheng has given speeches as the student representative many times over the past two years…”

While the teacher was praising Bai Cheng, no one else spoke.

Ying Cheng looked displeased. He leaned toward Yan Jinge and muttered under his breath, “When have we ever seen the Old Bat speak so gently? It’s only because she can’t afford to offend Bai Cheng…”

As soon as the teacher finished her introduction, Ying Cheng couldn’t help but speak up. “Teacher, that’s my seat.”

The teacher just gave an “oh” and turned the tables on him. “I’ve made a temporary seat change. You’ll sit with Wang Hu from now on. I’ve been seeing you talking to the people in front of and behind you during class lately; this is a good chance to fix that habit of yours.”

Ying Cheng was fuming.

But since the teacher had spoken, he couldn’t talk back as a student. He could only cast a lingering, reluctant look at Yan Jinge and say, “Fine, I’m going then.”

Ying Cheng packed his things and left dejectedly.

Yan Jinge looked at Bai Cheng in the seat.

Bai Cheng was looking at him too.

The corners of Bai Cheng’s mouth curled up slightly. He tapped his curled finger lightly on the desk, signaling for Yan Jinge to come over.

Yan Jinge didn’t budge.

He waited until the teacher had finished all the arrangements, said a few more gentle words to Bai Cheng, and instructed the other students to focus on the next lesson. Only after she left the classroom did Yan Jinge slowly walk over and ask, “Why are you here?”

“I wanted to sit with you,” Bai Cheng said in a low voice.

Yan Jinge frowned.

Here we go again.

Logically speaking, shouldn’t a scumbag loathe his original partner and want nothing to do with them? Why was this Bai Cheng playing so far outside the script? He was being so… clingy that Yan Jinge didn’t even know how to start the face-slapping process.

-As things stood, Yan Jinge felt that Bai Cheng really couldn’t be considered a scumbag.

At least emotionally, up until this point, Bai Cheng hadn’t done anything to wrong Yan Jinge.

In settings with fewer people, Bai Cheng never tried to distance himself from Yan Jinge.

He only tried to cover things up when there were too many people around.

Yan Jinge had originally thought that Bai Cheng’s reluctance to let others know about their relationship was so he could keep his options open, but after observing him for the past two days, that didn’t seem to be the case.

There were still many people in school who came forward one after another to confess to Bai Cheng, but he hadn’t accepted a single one. Most importantly, he maintained a strong sense of distance from others. He only had a few close friends and was never ambiguous with them. Every day after school, he would find Yan Jinge so they could go home together, leaving him no time to be with anyone else.

Even Ying Cheng, along with the school forums, firmly believed that Bai Cheng looked down on everyone at school and definitely wouldn’t date anyone.

Thinking about it now, Yan Jinge and Bai Cheng were high school students. At this age, the focus was still on studying. Dating was considered ‘early love,’ so they certainly couldn’t be too blatant about it in front of other students.

Yan Jinge pursed his lips and instinctively asked, “Then why didn’t you come before?”

Bai Cheng paused, then said bluntly, “The one I like is the current you.”

Yan Jinge: “???”

Crap.

Wait.

What did Bai Cheng mean by that???

Could this scumbag have realized that he wasn’t the previous Yan Jinge??? Moreover, he explicitly said he didn’t like the original host, but liked the current…

Doesn’t that mean…

He was cheating on the original host with him!!!??

Yan Jinge: “!!!”

A rare trace of panic appeared in Yan Jinge’s expression. He turned his head and opened the Task Panel inside the classroom to look at the mission once more.

It indeed stated that he was to transmigrate into the bodies of the original partners in various Small Worlds to slap the faces of scumbags.

So here was the problem.

For Yan Jinge to slap a face, he needed evidence of the scumbag being “scummy.” From the current perspective, the scumbag had cheated-but the issue was that the scumbag liked him, and the person he was cheating with was also him??? But since he had entered this world, he was the original host, which was equivalent to the scumbag still liking the original host… If the scumbag wasn’t scummy, how was he supposed to slap his face??? It was turning into a recursive loop!

This was terrifying, truly terrifying.

Yan Jinge felt a bit unwell.

The next class was math.

Yan Jinge spent the entire period with his mind wandering elsewhere. As the class was about to end, Yan Jinge suddenly jolted.

-Bai Cheng had suddenly grabbed his left hand, which was hanging beneath the desk.

***

The author has something to say:

Yan Jinge: You grabbed my hand during class!!!

Bai Cheng: …What else? It wouldn’t be appropriate to grab anywhere else, right?
