Chapter 1

I was reborn.

One hour before the engagement banquet.

Before my eyes, fragments of my past life still lingered.

In my previous life, my parents forced me to marry a blind date, Lin Yuan. Back then, my mother threatened suicide to make me break up with Zhou Cheng.

“He’s nine years older than you. What good could come from being with him?”

“Listen to your mother, I’m only thinking of your best interests!”

After the wedding, she pressured me to have a child.

“Just have a child, everything will be fine. That’s how it is for everyone.”

“Could Lin Yuan really leave with some other woman? All men are like that. Once you have a child, he’ll come to his senses.”

When Lin Yuan cheated, my mother still forbade me from divorcing.

She said that wanting a divorce meant I wanted to drive her to her death.

What good woman could survive being divorced?

“Your job only brings in three thousand a month. Without Lin Yuan, can you even survive?”

She seemed to have forgotten that I originally had a good job, and she was the one who forced me to quit and go home.

Mother was like a soft yet resilient vine, coiling around me layer by layer. It seemed like protection from wind and rain, but in reality, it was strangling all my living space.

When Lin Yuan was living with another woman, Zhou Cheng asked me if I wanted a divorce.

“Suisui, get a divorce. I’ll help you raise the child.”

He half-knelt before me, his eyes full of heartache: “Live for yourself, don’t always give in for others.”

I agreed to go with Zhou Cheng.

But the day after I left home, Lin Yuan brought the child to find my mother.

My mother swallowed a bottle of sleeping pills.

She almost died.

After that, I never saw Zhou Cheng again.

Zhou Cheng was my nominal uncle, but my mother would rather die than agree to me being with him.

She said all women go through this: “Why must you stir up trouble?”

My father died on the way to meet his lover.

My mother still believed that if Father hadn’t died, he would have come to his senses and returned home one day.

For my father’s reputation, she forbade me from marrying Zhou Cheng.

My father was a foster son of the Zhou family, long since expelled from the Zhou family.

But even so, my mother stubbornly insisted that I was of Zhou blood.

She was crazy.

And she drove me crazy too.

Later, when I got a terminal illness, Lin Yuan refused to pay a single cent, and the child also advised me to give up treatment.

“Grandma said your illness will cost a lot. Don’t get treatment, I still have to go to school.”

My mother didn’t dare look at me, just whispered: “Think of the child.”

Only then did I suddenly realize: my mother didn’t love me, she only loved her identity as a mother.

How ridiculous my life was.

Later, Zhou Cheng rushed over and took me away in front of my mother.

This time, my mother didn’t stop him.

Because she knew I was dying, and if Zhou Cheng didn’t take me, I would still have to spend “the child’s school fees”.

The day I died, it snowed heavily.

Zhou Cheng half-knelt before my hospital bed, tears in his eyes, calling my name.

He bought a black suit, with a rose pinned to his chest.

By then, I could barely speak.

Zhou Cheng helped me into a wedding dress and danced a dance before my hospital bed.

It was the first dance he taught me when we first met.

We had promised to hold each other’s hands and dance this dance when we got married.

I broke that promise.
