Seventh Security Bureau: Vine - Chapter 2
Chapter 2
My mom was chattering behind me nonstop.
She was somewhat neurotic. “Lin Yuan is a good young man, perfect for you. You two get married, pay the mortgage together, and I’ll help you take care of the kids. What a wonderful life that would be.”
I sneered. In my previous life, Lin Yuan took his mistress everywhere, and the house had long been squandered by him. There was no wonderful life.
I tugged at the decorations on my qipao and said to my mom, “I’m going to the restroom.”
Turning left out the door, I saw my best friend Lu Zhenzhen sitting there sighing.
“You’re really getting engaged? What about your Uncle Zhou?”
I didn’t answer her, just said, “Let’s swap shoes.”
I returned the white kitten heels to Lu Zhenzhen and put on her Converse sneakers.
She frowned. “What’s this mix-and-match style? Qipao with Converse?”
After changing shoes, I held her hand. “Zhenzhen, thank you!”
In my last life, Zhenzhen had advised me many times to think about myself. When Lin Yuan cheated, she even went to confront him and got into a fight. And when I was dying, Zhenzhen wanted to use all her savings to pay for my medical treatment. We weren’t related by blood, but best friends are the family we choose for ourselves.
She looked confused and asked if I was crazy.
I gazed at the decorated engagement stage and smiled firmly.
Before the engagement ceremony began, I sent Zhou Cheng a message.
[Uncle Zhou, are you coming?]
Zhou Cheng didn’t reply.
But I knew he was there.
On the day of my engagement, he stood in a corner and watched the whole thing. On his way home, he drove his car into the median strip. By the time he recovered from his injuries, I was already married.
Lin Yuan and I took the microphone and walked onto the stage. My mom was seated in the audience, beaming with joy.
The engagement banquet shouldn’t have been this grand, but my mom had intentionally wanted the Zhou family to know.
“The engaged couple, say a few words.”
I looked around the crowd, searching for Zhou Cheng’s figure.
Finally, I spotted Zhou Cheng behind a pillar.
Our eyes met, and I almost burst into tears.
Thirty-three years old, full of vigor and drive-Zhou Cheng, there was still time for everything!
I smiled, picked up the microphone, and said, “I’ll go first.”
Lin Yuan shrugged. “Go ahead. There’s really nothing much to say.”
“Thank you all for coming to my engagement banquet today, but I have to be honest. I didn’t want to hold this banquet; my mom insisted on it.”
My mom’s face turned cold, and she said in a low voice, “What are you saying? Don’t go crazy, Jiang Suisui!”
I ignored her and walked a few steps forward with the microphone.
“And I don’t want to get engaged to Lin Yuan. My mom likes Lin Yuan. Over the years, she’s always used her own preferences to constrain my life. College entrance exams, work, finding a boyfriend, marriage-my mom has to arrange everything according to her own ideas. Now I want to say one thing to my mom: screw that, I’m not going to obey anymore.”
My mom shot up from her seat!
She wanted to come up and cover my mouth.
But before she could reach me, I jumped off the stage.
Amidst the shocked gazes, I ran toward Zhou Cheng:
“Uncle Zhou! I’ve made up my mind. I want to go with you!”
