Survival Guide After Accidentally Kissing a Demon - Chapter 271
Chapter 271
Ashera stood outside the low shed.
His golden eyes were quiet as he watched for a few seconds.
The stiffness in his expression soon softened.
Then he lightly swept his pale fingertips through the air, and the animals that had been dead opened their eyes again, swaying unsteadily to their feet.
It was too quiet.
He drew his brows together slightly and swept his pale fingertips again.
In an instant, all the animals began crying out at once.
Their calls rose and fell, breaking the silence.
“Now this is… too noisy.”
He spoke in a low voice, a trace of dissatisfaction in it.
As soon as the words fell, the animals seemed to receive an order and lowered the frequency of their cries.
He had charmed them often enough that even though their pupils had already dilated and their movements were stiff, it did not look strange.
But food… would they still eat?
They had already become dead things. They probably did not need to eat anymore.
Ashera thought that, but after a moment, he still raised his hand and lightly swept it through the air, making the food float into the wooden trough.
If they did not eat, she would find it strange.
“Eat anyway…”
He said it softly.
The animals followed his words, lowering their heads and stiffly opening their mouths to eat.
Only then did the young man nod in satisfaction.
Just then, a girl’s anxious cry suddenly came from inside the mud hut.
“Oh my god… Ashera-”
Her voice was filled with worry and panic.
Ashera had just turned around when he saw the gray-haired, red-eyed girl run out holding a black, fluffy bundle in her arms.
“Little Black is sick. He doesn’t have the strength to stand, and he can’t even meow anymore.”
When those red eyes looked over, they were faintly shimmering with tears.
“We have to go to the Town and find a doctor to take a look at him,” the girl said again.
Ashera paused, then nodded.
He had originally wanted to say that he could use Mana to make Little Black stand up again, and Little Black would become even more obedient.
But his instincts told him she would not like that suggestion.
…
The two of them used Beast Transformation and hurried to the Town with Little Black.
A heavy, oppressive atmosphere hung over the Town’s streets. Worry and exhaustion marked every face.
It was as if the happiness had been stripped from them by the disaster that had lingered for so long.
They soon found the only veterinary clinic in the Town. Its old door was half-closed, and much of the paint on the walls had peeled away.
Sitting behind an aged wooden desk, the veterinarian had messy hair, as if he had no time to take care of it, and his eyes were bloodshot.
The veterinarian only glanced at the black cat in her arms from a distance before immediately shaking his head.
“It’s obvious that it won’t make it,” the veterinarian said bluntly.
“It’s been infected with the plague. The poultry, livestock, and pets in Tilisha are basically all dying for this reason right now. This is the most rampant plague we’ve seen, and there truly isn’t a thing we can do about it.”
The veterinarian let out a long sigh and raised his hand, roughly gesturing in every direction.
“There’s a fire pit outside the Town. Take it there and burn it. Otherwise, other animals will be affected too, even-”
The girl raised her hand to wipe her tears, but the veterinarian quickly lifted a hand to stop her and continued,
“Even people can be affected. After you carry this cat back, remember to wash yourself several times. Don’t let the sores on its body infect you. This could threaten your life.”
Hearing the veterinarian say that, Ashera’s expression changed.
He immediately reached out and took the black cat from the girl’s arms, while his other hand swiftly came to rest on her shoulder.
A thin veil of black mist, invisible to the naked eye, drifted from his palm and swept over her in an instant, dispersing anything unclean she might have come into contact with.
…
They left the clinic.
The noon sun poured down with Tilisha’s scorching heat, but it did nothing to dispel the gloom hanging over them.
Seeing that the girl was still downcast, a trace of aching concern entered Ashera’s puzzled gaze.
In one hand, he held Little Black, whose limbs now hung limply. With the other, he lifted his pale fingers and gently stroked the girl’s cheek.
Trying to comfort her, he lowered his head and said softly,
“It’s all right. If you d-don’t want it to leave us, I can make it… make it stay.”
The girl looked up, a sheen of moisture gathering in her reddened eyes. She asked in a low voice,
“Will Little Black be in a lot of pain?”
Ashera pressed a light kiss to the corner of her eye and promised,
“No. I-I’ll let it stay quietly by our side, just like it never… never got sick at all.”
A flicker of surprise passed through the girl’s red eyes.
She glanced at the black cat in his hand, its breath faint, too weak now even to struggle.
“I have a way to do it, as long as it’s wh-what you want,” he said again.
The girl hesitated for a few seconds. Finally, she slowly nodded.
“All right. Then try it.”
…
Beili had still been a little confused at first, wondering what miraculous method Ashera planned to use to stop the spread of the Pox Plague.
Then she watched as the boy gently set Little Black on the ground and slit his fingertip.
After a ripple of dark Mana, Little Black’s corpse was turned into a puppet through his bewitching power.
Uh…
“Isn’t this… maybe not such a good idea?”
Beili’s brows drew together slightly as she asked him as tactfully as she could.
The boy, however, didn’t think there was anything wrong with it. Instead, he said to her in a gentle voice,
“It just doesn’t have a heartbeat anymore. Though after a while, it m-might start to smell a little… but that can be fixed with m-magic too.”
“Trust me. It will become even more… more obedient than before-”
The corners of his thin, cool lips lifted slightly.
“It won’t come bother us anymore while we’re still sleeping. And this way, we won’t have to f-feed it cat food anymore either…”
Halting and stammering, the boy patiently listed the benefits of turning Little Black into a puppet.
Meanwhile…
Beili opened her mouth, then stopped, looking at Little Black standing stiffly on the ground.
It had completely lost all life and spirit.
Her feelings were complicated.
She didn’t know how to explain it to the boy.
After thinking for a while, she finally said tactfully,
“But if it turns into this, I might not want to hold it anymore…”
When the boy heard that, his lashes curved, and the corners of his eyes and brows lifted with a faint, smiling delight.
“Then that’s even… even better. I never l-liked you holding it,” he said.
