Chapter 272

All along the way, Beili kept looking at the young man holding her hand, a faint unease suddenly rising in her heart-

Although Ashera in his Youth Form was gentler than his other form, he was actually harder to deal with.

His other form would vent his emotions directly. If he was angry, he lashed out; if he was enraged, he went mad.

The young man’s personality was much more restrained.

She just didn’t know what those restrained emotions would turn into when they finally erupted…

Noticing her quiet silence, the young man turned back and asked in a faint voice,

“Are you still un-unhappy?”

Beili shook her head lightly, her face showing little emotion.

“Then why aren’t you t-talking anymore? You’re not usually like this.”

The young man spoke again.

Usually, when she was with him, she always had endless things to say.

She would point out the cacti by the roadside, the clouds drifting through the sky, and the eagles flying overhead for him to see.

The young man pressed his cold, thin lips together a little aggrievedly, then raised his hand and pointed at the little black cat following behind them.

“Look, it-it isn’t running around. If you want to hear it m-meow… it can meow too.”

Beili tugged at the corners of her lips, showing him a smile, then sighed helplessly in her heart.

“I know, but Little Black is already dead.”

She said it softly.

By then, the two of them had just reached the edge of the pit where fire still burned.

The fire pit used to burn livestock infected with the Pox Plague was still surrounded by people.

Beili looked back at Little Black, then at the fire pit. Her red eyes lowered slightly before she said softly to it,

“Go on.”

Receiving her command, Little Black meowed and obediently walked toward the fire pit.

Under the sunlight, a flash of cold silver appeared before her eyes, blocking her view.

“Why?”

Beili lifted her red eyes and saw the young man’s brows draw together slightly, a hint of confusion appearing on his pale, gloomy face.

“Since you can’t bear to p-part with it, why do you want to b-burn it?”

He could not understand.

“Or do you think it’s too q-quiet, and you want it to be a little more l-lively?”

Beili shook her head and answered,

“Because it’s already dead, Ashera.”

“What was forcibly left behind is only its shell. Its soul has already departed…”

Her voice paused, and she changed to another way of explaining it.

“The one that was with us was actually Little Black’s soul. This plague made its soul leave its body and go to another world.”

“Then you…”

The young man opened his mouth, then closed it again.

It seemed they were discussing death.

Ashera felt that he was not afraid of death.

Because he knew that not only could they be together in this world, but even after leaving this world and going to Hell, they would still be together.

“Then do you still feel un-unhappy?”

“No.”

She answered.

Ashera relaxed. The corners of his lips curved up lightly, and he nodded as he said,

“Don’t be sad. If it’s in Hell, we’ll still be able to find it.”

Although he had no real feelings for that black cat, as long as it could make Little Butterfly happy, anything was fine.

When the young man moved aside, Little Black was already gone from the edge of the fire pit.

By the time they reached the village entrance, it was already dusk.

Beili looked back at the molten-gold sunset, and silver specks of starlight suddenly floated before her eyes.

Her head abruptly felt a little dizzy.

She didn’t know what was wrong. These past few days, she had often felt lightheaded.

She felt dizzy while walking, dizzy sitting in a chair, and dizzy lying in bed.

But it was only a slight dizziness, just enough to make her unable to muster any energy for anything.

Though with the young man around, she did not need to do anything anyway.
The boy would take the initiative to shoulder everything.

All she had to do was respond when he reached for her, and he would be perfectly content.

But that was beside the point. In short, she needed to go back and lie down for a while.

Just for a while.

…

A dozen or so people were standing at the fork in the road that led from the village back to the mud house.

From a distance, Beili saw them and felt that something was off about their expressions.

When they drew closer, the villagers immediately crowded around them.

They surrounded the two of them in the middle, all talking over one another in a rush to speak.

Beili frowned slightly and listened for a while through the dizziness in her head before she barely managed to piece together what had happened.

The poultry and livestock they had been keeping loose in the low shed had been walking around the village covered in sores.

They were spreading the plague everywhere.

A child had ridden their ox for a while, and now he had already been infected with sores. He had a high fever and was unconscious.

“My ox and sheep are both sick!” someone said.

“What am I supposed to do about my child? Life had finally started to look a little hopeful, and now this happens!” another person said anxiously.

The people surrounding them spoke one after another in a chaotic clamor.

Some were crying in panic, while others had anger in their voices.

At the end of the day, the reason these people had blocked them here was to demand some compensation.

Because the village had already moved past the stage of communal living. Everyone was now responsible for their own food and lodging.

Aside from the few communal camels at the village entrance used for travel, the funds for building their home had basically been exhausted.

At first, everyone had come to this remote wasteland to start over in order to avoid the rampant lice and flies.

With the addition of two Nobles, life had become much easier for everyone.

But just when things had finally begun to improve, no one expected a plague to arrive as well.

The poultry and livestock they had received in the beginning had all died in the plague.

On top of that, the grain planted at the start of the rainy season had yet to reach harvest.

Everyone had already fallen into difficult times.

Only the poultry and livestock belonging to the Noble household at the end of the road could still come out for walks every day.

Oh, if not for their Noble bloodline, those poultry and livestock would have been snatched clean long ago.

And the villagers found it strange, too. Why had everyone else’s poultry and livestock died, yet the Noble household’s animals were let loose every day and remained perfectly fine?

Until today, when several children went to ride the Noble household’s ox and all fell ill after coming back.

Only when everyone went to check did they discover that the Noble household’s poultry and livestock had long since died.

They had merely used some method to make them keep moving around as though they were still alive.

…

The boy stood quietly to the side, watching the chattering, endless crowd with cold eyes.

A hint of killing intent surfaced in the depths of his gilded eyes.

As long as the girl beside him showed anger, or even the slightest trace of impatience, he would immediately kill them all.

But the girl was not angry, nor was she impatient.

She simply stood there and listened quietly for a while.

Only when everyone had run out of words did she stroke the Spatial Bracelet on her wrist and open her mouth as if to say something.

But then-

All of a sudden.

The girl’s shoulders swayed lightly, and her dark red eyes blinked slowly.

Then her whole body toppled backward like a puppet whose strings had been cut.

In the second before her vision plunged into darkness,

she instinctively turned her head to look at the silver-haired boy. Before she could see him clearly, she lost consciousness.

Almost the instant she fell, the boy reached out and gently gathered her into his arms.

There was no panic in his golden eyes, nor any worry.

Only obvious helplessness and confusion.
