Chapter 301

His narrow fox-like eyes paused for the barest instant, lashes stilling.

The leaping firelight cast winglike shadows across the young man’s fair, exquisite profile, like gauze fluttering in the air.

“Is that all you wanted to ask?”

Her heart gave a heavy thud.

Beili clenched her fingers so hard her knuckles turned faintly white.

She was clearly being warmed by the fire, yet she still could not stop feeling cold.

Thinking quickly, she pressed her lips together, lowered her heated red eyes, and gave a soft “Mm.”

Her voice was so faint it was almost inaudible.

In the next second, the young man’s figure blurred, and he suddenly appeared right in front of her.

His hand closed around her throat.

That force slammed her hard against the stone wall.

Beili lifted her eyes and saw his lashes lowered beneath those vivid red, choppy bangs, his gaze locked on her.

Murderous intent surged and churned in the depths of his dark eyes, as if he wanted to devour her whole.

“Is that all you wanted to ask?”

His tone was slow as he asked again.

“Yes.”

Although his hand was around her throat, he was not squeezing very hard. She could still force out the words with difficulty. She looked straight into his eyes and said,

“I lied to you. Everything we experienced in Tilisha was fake…”

“Shut up-”

The pressure around her throat abruptly tightened, as if he were trying to stop her that way. His fingertips trembled slightly.

Beili continued,

“The disaster there was fake. I used chaos to distract you!”

“That village was fake too! The mud hut we stayed in was fake! The hugs and kisses we shared in there were fake!”

“As for the heart, I never intended to give it back to you…”

The force around her neck suddenly loosened.

The young man turned his head away, then turned his back to her.

“Little Butterfly… why would you treat me like this?”

His voice was hoarse as he asked, his back lonely and forlorn.

Beili’s red eyes trembled faintly. The suspicion in her heart had all but become fact after those few simple probes.

The only good news was this:

The one who had escaped the Dream Cage was Ashera in his Youth Form.

“Ashera…”

She called his name and raised a hand, wanting to touch the young man’s face.

The young man looked at her with a dark, vicious gaze.

Beili seemed to receive the warning-

She was not allowed to make any intimate gesture toward his current body.

Not even touching his face.

“Now, you’ve already woken up from the dream. You know what happened.”

She had indeed deceived him. She did not want to argue that.

Ashera had deceived her too, hadn’t he?

Beili could only grab the young man’s sleeve, hide every trace of urgency in her voice, and ask as calmly as she could,

“Where is the real Lance? Where did you hide him? Is he still in the dream?”

“Hide him?”

Using a voice identical to Lance’s, the young man answered her.

“I didn’t hide him. He’s dead.”

…

He was dead.

Three words.

They dragged Beili’s thoughts straight to rock bottom.

Lance… was dead?

Beili was thrown into panic, and at the same time, she could not believe it.

Lance had only had a dream. His consciousness had only been trapped in the dream she created. How could he be dead…

“Honestly, this really isn’t a good time to joke, Ashera.”

Beili felt her fingers trembling beyond her control. She reached out, gripped the young man’s arm tightly, and turned him around.
“Tell me Lance wasn’t killed by you.”

Perhaps it was panic and desperation, but her eyes burned hot, and a thin mist blurred her vision.

“That little fox said you lied to me. I didn’t believe it. I had to come out and see if it was true.”

The boy’s voice was very soft.

“So one of those two had to die. Otherwise, I couldn’t come out.”

He spoke as if it had nothing to do with him at all.

“The bigger fox stepped forward on his own. He was willing to be the sacrifice.”

“Impossible-”

Beili couldn’t stop her voice from rising. The sound echoed faintly through the cave.

It wasn’t that she didn’t believe Lance would sacrifice himself for Renee. Of course Lance would.

At the last welcome party, when she threatened him, the boy had shielded his sister in his arms without the slightest hesitation. That alone had proven it. But…

“Dreams can’t kill people.”

She said it with certainty.

The boy only looked at her quietly. Then, all at once, the corner of his lips curved into a smile.

“Are you worried about him?”

He asked softly, then sighed.

“Dreams can’t kill people, but people trapped inside dreams can.”

“You imprisoned us, and then you left us.”

“We missed you so much that we imprisoned that fox’s soul and used his body to come out.”

With a soft laugh, he asked, “Aren’t you happy to see me?”

He lifted his hand, instinctively wanting to stroke her face, but after seeing his own hand, he lowered it again. He merely took one step closer to her.

“He told me to hide myself well and not expose myself too soon. He also said you would run away.”

The boy said softly, “So now that you know, will you run away?”

Beili felt as though her mind had become a mess. Even her gaze had gone unfocused.

She took a step back, her spine striking the cold stone wall, but her knees had already gone weak.

The boy caught her by the arm, keeping her from collapsing to the ground.

“When darkness descends, the eldest son will die.”

Those were the words Bertie Swan had spoken to her in the dream.

The last time she entered the Dream Cage, Tilisha had already sunk into darkness.

Now Ashera was telling her that Lance was already dead.

His vivid maple-red hair seemed to burn under the glow of the fireballs.

Those long, narrow fox eyes that tilted up faintly at the corners, those obsidian-black pupils, those delicate features-the boy stood vividly before her, yet his soul had already…

What else had Bertie Swan said to her?

Beili tried desperately to remember.

“Are you grieving for him?”

The boy’s voice pulled her thoughts back. At the same time, he took out a handkerchief with a red base and gold trim, pressing it gently to her cheek and wiping away the damp traces on her face.

What else had Bertie Swan said to her?

Beili lowered her head, dazedly trying to recall, only for her face to be caught and lifted again.

“Are you thinking about him?”

A trace of anger had entered the boy’s voice.

Right.

Bertie Swan had actually already told her how to undo the curse.

Setting aside all the other useless conversation, Beili suddenly remembered something Bertie Swan had said to her-

“If you want to break the curse, the current you cannot do it.”

Understood the other way around, didn’t that mean that a future version of her would be able to break the curse that had descended upon the Tilisha Kingdom and bring Lance back?

Drip.

A drop of icy liquid.

Whose tear had fallen onto her fingers?
