Chapter 302

Thinking of Bertie Swan’s words, Beili felt as if she had grasped a sliver of hope, and her mind cleared in an instant.

She slowly lifted her red eyes and saw that the young man’s narrow, upturned fox eyes were wet.

Ashera was crying.

And yet, though he was crying, what churned in the depths of his eyes was the towering fury of someone who had been neglected.

Like a starving beast that wanted to devour her alive.

Beili set Bertie Swan’s words aside for the moment and forced herself to calm down.

She raised her hand, wanting to wipe away his tears, but he turned his head and avoided her. Helpless, Beili picked up the handkerchief in his hand instead. This time, he did not dodge.

“Ashera, what are you planning to do?”

Did he want to kill her?

No. If that had been his plan, he would have acted decisively the moment he opened his eyes in the infirmary and saw her.

Back then, she had been completely defenseless.

The young man only looked at her quietly, saying nothing.

“If… I undo the dream…”

If she undid the Dream Cage, then the Ashera with Black Goat Horns growing from his head would come out of the cage.

If they had hidden Lance’s soul away, then once the dream was undone, would Lance come back?

She still firmly believed that Ashera had only hidden Lance’s consciousness.

“No.”

The young man suddenly spoke. “Don’t undo it.”

“You don’t want it undone?”

Beili looked at him in surprise.

She had originally thought Ashera wanted her to break open the cage.

Did he want to keep the other Ashera locked inside the Dream Cage?

Beili quickly followed his lead and said to him,

“Since his soul was imprisoned by you, can you bring his soul back?”

“This is between us. It has nothing to do with him. Bring his soul back, and I’ll agree to any demand you make.”

There was an unmistakable trace of pleading in both her tone and her eyes.

When her words fell,

The only reply was the faint sound of flames burning through the air.

In the past, this trick had worked very well on him.

But now, it seemed to have lost its effect.

The young man only looked at her without saying a word.

Deep in his eyes, it was as if thorns were growing wildly.

Those sharp spines seemed to be buried deep in his flesh and blood.

They made his gaze both pained and violent.

As though he wanted to tear everything before him to pieces.

Suddenly, a violent commotion came from outside the cave.

When Beili turned to look out of the cave, she saw a dark creature over two meters tall rush inside like a black whirlwind.

Black blood poured from its body, giving off a pungent stench, and as it ran, it let out an eerie howl that made one’s hair stand on end.

It stumbled in through the cave entrance, its heavy body kicking up a thick cloud of dust and sending shattered stones flying in every direction.

Beili’s red eyes paused. Her mind was spinning rapidly as she considered how to respond, when her vision suddenly blurred and her body instantly lost its balance.

By the time she reacted, the young man had already pulled her behind him in a flash.

A burst of strange, halting whispers sounded.

As if they had come from the depths of the earth, they echoed indistinctly through the cave.

After that sound rose, the cave suddenly became incomparably quiet, as though even time had frozen.

Beili peeked half her head out from behind the young man and looked at the dark creature.

The dark creature was kneeling before him in submission, its towering body curled into a large mass as if it were trembling, looking utterly humble.

The young man looked at the dark creature with an indifferent expression. The only thing in his eyes was displeasure at being interrupted.

As if, in his eyes, the huge dark creature was nothing more than an insignificant ant.

Perhaps Ashera had communicated with the dark creature.

Or perhaps he had not.
In short, after the dark creature had been stared at expressionlessly by Ashera for only a short while, it raised its sharp, spiked claws without hesitation and drove them viciously into its own heart.

Black blood flowed from its chest, spreading across the ground like a shadow.

Then another burst of hurried footsteps came from outside the cave.

There were anxious shouts as well.

“Miss Bartholomew-”

“Miss Bartholomew-!”

Hearing someone call her name again and again, Beili listened carefully and recognized Clarence’s voice.

She quickly raised her voice and answered from inside the cave.

…

Cyril and the others had returned.

This mission had been far from easy. The dark creature they had to take down was the largest among all the mission targets, and it ran as fast as lightning.

After Cyril and Clarence attacked it together, that cunning dark creature quickly broke through the remaining students, who were comparatively weaker, and escaped.

The three of them immediately followed its trail and chased after it.

But as they gave chase, they were shocked to discover that the direction the dark creature was fleeing in was actually the cave where Bartholomew and Lance had taken shelter from the rain.

Fortunately, when they arrived, the dark creature was already dead inside the cave, and the other two were safe and sound.

Only, the position in which the dark creature had fallen was somewhat strange.

After seeing that the two people in the cave were fine, Clarence began carefully examining the dark creature’s condition.

The last-place student cheered the moment he confirmed the danger was gone. Then he limped excitedly over to the dark creature and swiftly removed its Magic Crystal.

When they entered the cave, they saw Bartholomew and Lance sitting together. They seemed to be keeping a certain distance from each other, yet there was also the faintest sense that they were leaning against one another.

Lance in particular was clearly leaning somewhat against Bartholomew, and Bartholomew had actually not pushed him away.

Cyril’s expression instantly darkened.

“Bartholomew.”

He spoke with a grim face, then tossed over a sheet of parchment.

Beili reached out to catch it and asked in confusion, “This is…”

Seeing the feather-pen drawing on it that resembled a Teleportation Array, Beili immediately thought of the dark creatures they had encountered during their last expedition to the island, the ones carrying out a mysterious ritual.

“You encountered the same thing as last time?”

“Yes.”

Cyril’s expression was solemn.

Although Clarence had not taken part in the expedition assessment with them last time, he also said, “Actually, when I came with another team to complete an expedition assessment mission last time, I also saw dark creatures performing some kind of ritual.”

Cyril’s brows were tightly furrowed, and his voice was grave. “This matter is anything but ordinary. It may be some kind of omen. We must tell the people of the Holy Church Academy and have them arrange for experts in Teleportation Arrays to investigate the purpose of these dark creatures.”

…

By the time they returned to Holy Island Academy, the horizon had already been dyed crimson by the brilliant sunset. It was evening.

The group stood in the Academy square, preparing to say goodbye.

Cyril said he would take the clues and the drawing to the Holy Church Academy, and Clarence accompanied His Highness the Prince there.

As for the rest of them, they were free to do as they pleased.

“Lance-”

Just as they were about to leave, Cyril suddenly called out.

There was no other reason.

Lance had followed very naturally behind Bartholomew, and the direction he was heading was not toward the boys’ dormitory at all.

After Cyril called out, it was Bartholomew who stopped first. Only then did the red-haired, black-eyed boy stop as well.

The two of them turned back to look at him together.

Cyril paused for a moment, then reminded him coldly, “The boys’ dormitory is that way.”
