Chapter 332

Of course, Beili didn’t possess some miraculous talent that let her identify a loaf’s baker with a single bite.

She remembered because the last time she had eaten ham bread from Lisa’s bakery, the ham had been specially cut into little stars.

It did nothing for the flavor, but it had left a visual impression on her. That small touch was also what set Lisa’s bakery apart from the others.

“Did all this bread come from the bakery circled on the map?” she asked.

Ashera lowered his golden eyes and gave a lazy nod.

Beili paused in the middle of chewing. Then she picked all the ham bread out of the bag and ate every last piece.

“I like this one. Could you go buy some more?” Beili took out the map again and handed it to him. “Make sure you get it from the shop marked on the map.”

The moment Ashera returned, Beili went up to him and held out her hand.

“Where’s the bread?”

Ashera placed a storage pouch in her hand.

Beili opened it and looked inside. Once again, the ham wasn’t shaped like stars. It had been cut into ordinary cubes.

“Did you go to the shop I marked on the map? Was there a squirrel Half-beast working there?” Beili asked, careful not to reveal anything in her expression.

“Yes.”

Ashera nodded, looking perfectly natural.

He might be lying.

If the bakery had closed or changed owners, Ashera could have simply told her.

Instead, he had chosen to hide it.

Beili’s red eyes stilled. She had a feeling something had happened to Lisa.

Beili had lost track of time after spending so long in the Far North.

But the Far North had gone from polar day to polar night. That told her they were drawing closer and closer to the point when the young man would imprison her on the stone platform.

Perhaps that time had already arrived.

…

Beili decided to leave the Far North and visit Valniesnow Town.

However, she knew Ashera would never let her leave.

Their agreement was that she would not leave the Far North.

Although there was no explicit Contract binding her, the instant she stepped through that door, Ashera would know. He would drag her back without leaving any room for discussion.

Unless Ashera fell asleep.

But Ashera never slept easily unless he wanted to.

Or perhaps…

An idea seemed to occur to Beili.

Ever since he had reclaimed his body, that black, swamp-like form of his had disappeared.

Beneath the Black Robe was pale skin and sharply defined abdominal muscles.

…Beili had been fortunate enough to see them several times.

After eating, Beili stopped reading the Magic Book.

She approached Ashera of her own accord.

Ashera was standing before the floor-to-ceiling window, his golden eyes lowered beneath his lashes. She couldn’t tell what he was thinking.

His silver hair cascaded down his back like a waterfall, gleaming with a mesmerizing luster.

Beili squeezed into the space between him and the window, gazing up at him eagerly with her red eyes.

“What is it?”

The corner of his lips curved upward as he spoke softly.

Beili said nothing. She simply rose onto her toes and kissed him.

Her warm lips pressed against his, and her sweet scent instantly enveloped him.

Ashera immediately understood what she wanted.

He wrapped an arm tightly around her back and kissed her deeply for a while before lifting her into his arms.

After they tumbled onto the bed, Beili placed a hand against his abdomen.

“I feel like it’s been a long time since I last touched the ‘creepy-crawlies’ inside you.”

“Creepy-crawlies?”

“Yes. They crawl over my hands, so that’s what they feel like.”

Beili gave him a light kiss on the lips.

“And right now, I kind of miss those ‘creepy-crawlies.'”

At her words, Ashera’s golden eyes curved with amusement.

“When you put it that way, I have no reason to refuse.”

As soon as he finished speaking, Ashera took hold of her fingertips and gently drew them across his abdomen.

His pale skin split open beneath the light sweep of her fingers, revealing the black flesh underneath.
The sight before her was bloody and brutally direct.

Beili froze.

“It’s different from before…” she whispered, swallowing hard.

“Last time? Ah… So this is what it was like last time…”

He tugged at the Black Robe, drawing it over the mass of flesh. Then, holding Beili’s hand, he slowly sank it through the Black Robe and into the flesh.

All manner of crawling things squirmed between her fingers. That numb, itchy sensation returned, as though countless tiny insects were threading their way through them.

His golden eyes watched her expression, a smile tugging at his lips.

“My dear Little Butterfly, is it the same now?” Ashera asked.

Beili raised her crimson eyes to meet his. In the dim light, his golden eyes appeared even darker and more fathomless, as if they could devour a person’s soul.

“Does it hurt?” Beili asked.

Ashera nodded gently.

“Then… can you feel it?”

Ashera chuckled and nodded again.

Before she could even move, the flesh beneath the Black Robe began clinging to her, crawling restlessly over her hand.

Now familiar with what to do, Beili smoothed the bloody filaments and gently kneaded the squirming “crawlers.” Soon, Ashera’s eyelashes began to tremble.

His elegant brows drew together slightly. His Adam’s apple bobbed, and low moans began to escape his throat.

…

After Ashera drifted into a dazed sleep, Beili pushed open the door, used Beast Transformation to turn into a butterfly, and flew away.

—

Beili had originally planned to sneak into Valniesnow Town to check on Lisa and her husband.

If it turned out to be a false alarm, then even if Ashera caught her and dragged her back-even if he gave her a vicious beating or punished her some other way-Beili would neither fight back nor resist.

But Lisa and her Half-beast husband were dead.

That was the news awaiting Beili when she arrived in Valniesnow Town.

Snowflakes drifted down beneath the overcast sky.

Beili stood silently in front of the bakery as she listened to the old woman’s explanation. Her face had gone pale, and her lips were pressed into a thin line.

Before time had been rewound, this same old woman had explained to her how Lisa and her husband had died.

Beili did not feel particularly grief-stricken. She merely frowned deeply, a trace of panic showing in her eyes.

She had a premonition.

Before long, whatever had happened to Lisa and her husband would happen to Mrs. Constance as well.

Once the old woman finished her account, she began asking Beili where she was from, why she had come here, and whether she was traveling alone.

After all, more and more people had recently begun dying without warning.

“Thank you for your concern-”

A deep voice suddenly sounded behind her, betraying no emotion.

“She did not come here alone.”

A broad, icy hand settled gently on her shoulder.

Understanding dawned on the old woman’s face. She smiled, nodded, and turned to leave.

Only then did the hand on Beili’s shoulder tighten slightly.

“Little Butterfly, you’ve disobeyed me again.”

Ashera chuckled softly. “I don’t like the Contract. Although we never signed a Contract, you still broke our agreement. That means you must be punished.”

He was angry.

Beili could clearly feel a shadow descending over her.

Dark and oppressive, it hung over her like a heavy storm cloud.

Thanks to the vast amount of Mana she had accumulated recently, she could still raise her crimson eyes as though nothing was wrong, even while Ashera was angry.

“Why did they still die?”

Beili no longer bothered to beat around the bush. She asked bluntly, “They’re dead. Does that mean Mrs. Constance will die too?”

A dangerous edge entered Ashera’s smile.

The corners of his lips curved in the faintest arc, and icy light flickered through his golden eyes as he asked softly,

“Why do you care about them?”

His tone was utterly indifferent, as though they were discussing today’s weather.

“It doesn’t matter who they are. As long as they’re inferior creatures, they’ll all die when their time comes.”
