Chapter 338

“…”

Beili was even more surprised.

She opened her mouth, but for a moment, she had no idea what to say.

After a long pause, she finally asked, “Did Prince Cyril order you to follow me?”

Clarence’s shoulders stiffened slightly. He hesitated for a moment before finally nodding.

“Go back to the Wolf Family, Clarence.”

Her tone was firm, leaving no room for negotiation. “I don’t need anyone following me. As for Prince Cyril, I’ll send him a letter explaining everything.”

Beneath his hat, a trace of dejection passed through his deep blue eyes.

Clarence’s lips moved as he struggled to come up with a suitable reason.

But Beili gave him no time.

After bidding him farewell with a formal salute, she used Beast Transformation to become a butterfly once more and flew into the Teleportation Array.

After a burst of distorted light, Beili emerged from the Teleportation Array.

She summoned one of her Morpho Butterflies, its body resembling a carved black diamond, and sent it ahead to guide her.

But after flying only a few yards, she heard the sound of a beast running through the forest below.

Beili descended.

A Grey Wolf was racing through the woods, anxiously glancing up every so often to keep track of her position.

“…”

Beili fell silent.

She lowered herself again, flying into the trees until she hovered above the Grey Wolf.

“Are you following me?”

She already knew the answer, and a hint of exasperation colored her voice.

“I lied just now, Miss Bartholomew. I’m not following you because Prince Cyril ordered me to…”

The Grey Wolf bared his sharp fangs, and an urgent yet resolute young voice came from his mouth.

“I can protect you!”

“I appreciate the thought, Clarence, but I don’t need protection.”

The girl’s blunt, cold voice came from the butterfly.

“If you come with me, you’ll only be a burden.”

The Grey Wolf let out a wounded whine.

“…”

With a sigh, the butterfly flew over and stopped in front of the Grey Wolf.

Seeing this, the Grey Wolf dug his sharp claws into the grass and came to a halt as well.

“If you believe me…”

As the butterfly beat its wings, a black mist like fine grains of sand drifted down. The girl’s voice was calm but grave.

“This world may soon be plunged into terrible chaos. The three kingdoms will go to war, and for some reason, the dark creature forces at the Border will be drawn into the conflict as well…”

“When that happens, you may want to be with your family.”

“What about you, Miss Bartholomew?”

The Grey Wolf raised his head to look at her.

“Don’t you want to stay with Duke Constance?”

“No.”

Her reply was brief and direct.

“I’m going to find the thing that can put an end to the chaos.”

The Grey Wolf’s ears drooped, along with his fluffy gray tail.

He seemed rather dejected.

But a moment later, they perked up again.

“Please allow me to follow you, Miss Bartholomew. I promise I won’t cause you any trouble.”

His voice rang clear as he continued, “What you’re doing is brave. If there’s any way I can help, I’m sure my family will be proud of me too.”

“…”

This was the first time Beili had realized just how stubborn Clarence could be.

But he wasn’t the one chosen by the opportunity in the original story.

Well… neither was she.

Thinking back to the original story, if the opportunity was supposed to be unlocked by two people…

Seen from that perspective, Beili suddenly found herself wavering.

Her gaze silently drifted downward.

Clarence was staring up at her, wagging his tail eagerly. His gray fur was even trembling slightly from nervousness.
Moonlight fell across her fan-like lashes, casting a hazy shadow beneath her eyelids.

“…All right. If that’s what you want, you can come along for now,” she said.

The butterfly landed lightly and returned to human form.

Beili took a map from her black storage pouch and spread it open, then looked at Clarence, who had also returned to human form.

He was staring at her with deep blue eyes that shimmered with excitement beneath the moonlight.

Beili cleared her throat. “This is the route I’ll be taking. Since you don’t have wings, I’ll wait for you at the Town on the outer perimeter. We can purchase supplies there.”

She raised a hand and transformed one of her black Morpho Butterflies into a Butterfly Brooch, then placed it in Clarence’s hand along with the marked map.

“You can use this Butterfly Brooch to communicate with me. Just channel a little Mana into it and speak. Even if we’re hundreds of miles apart, I’ll receive your message.”

She paused.

“You can also use it if you decide to give up. I won’t blame you…”

“I won’t keep you waiting long, Miss Bartholomew,” Clarence said quickly.

Beili hesitated, then nodded.

“Be careful on the road.”

With those final words, she activated Beast Transformation and continued on her journey, disappearing into the night in the blink of an eye.

…

Even while resting, Beili had the Morpho Butterflies carry her onward, so the journey took only three or four days.

Traveling all the way from Sainthos through Tilisha, she finally arrived at the southernmost Town.

It was the complete opposite of the blizzard-ridden Far North. The south was unbearably hot.

The gravel seemed to have been fused together by the intense heat, forming hard red rock beneath her feet.

The farther south she went, the hotter it became.

Water was the rarest and most precious resource here.

Although Beili had already purchased several enchanted items in Tilisha to ward off the heat, she had still severely underestimated just how scorching this place would be.

When she took out gold coins to book a room, the clerk regarded them with disdain.

“Water is the only currency accepted here,” the Inn clerk reminded her.

Beili had no choice but to put her gold coins away.

The good news was that while gold had lost its value here, Magic Crystal could still be used as normal.

She paid twenty pieces of Magic Crystal for a room at the Inn in this remote Town for three days.

The exorbitant price made Beili’s heart ache.

Magic Crystal.

When she had left the stone platform, she had sent the Morpho Butterflies to retrieve the Wooden Ring buried in the snow. It contained a large amount of Magic Crystal.

She and Ashera, while he was in his Youth Form, had accumulated all that Magic Crystal during their experiences in the future.

Thinking of the Wooden Ring, Beili belatedly realized something.

When she had awakened in her dormitory at Holy Island Academy and seen the Wooden Ring on her finger, she should have understood that the deaths she had experienced had never vanished.

She had simply been too slow to realize it.

Waiting for someone made time crawl, leaving far too much room for anxious thoughts.

Lying on the cool stone bed, Beili waited for Clarence to arrive while simultaneously hoping he would give up halfway and return to the Wolf Family Castle.

Clarence finally arrived on the third day.

He contacted her through the Butterfly Brooch and followed her directions to meet her at the Inn.

“Miss Bartholomew…”

Clarence was panting heavily and had just begun to speak when she raised a hand to stop him.

“Stop.”

She pointed at the cool stone bed inside the room and ordered expressionlessly,

“Lie down on the bed. I need to verify something.”
