Chapter 339

Clarence’s chestnut curls were damp with sweat, clinging to his forehead.

At the girl’s words, he visibly froze.

Then he obediently walked over to the cool stone bed and lay down.

“Miss Bartholomew, is this how you want me to lie?”

He sounded a little uneasy.

Beili gave a quiet hum of acknowledgment and walked over.

Beneath the boy’s short chestnut curls, his travel-worn face had flushed all the way down to his neck, like the smoldering red sun sinking beneath the horizon.

Beili already had her answer, but to be safe, she raised a hand and summoned one of her Morpho Butterflies, instantly plunging the boy on the bed into a deep sleep.

At the same time, she opened his Dream Domain.

When she saw the misty gray door, completely unlike Ashera’s, Beili felt slightly more at ease.

She withdrew from the Dream Domain, sat beside the stone bed, and quietly waited for Clarence to wake.

Clarence seemed as though he had not rested properly in days. He remained fast asleep until an employee of the Inn knocked on the door.

“Your time for the room is up,” the employee reminded them. “If you want to stay longer, you’ll have to pay another seven pieces of Magic Crystal.”

Only then did Clarence wake, groggy with sleep.

“Miss Bartholomew, I’m ready to leave. I don’t need any more rest,” Clarence said as he tried to sit up.

Beili glanced at the bloodshot-eyed boy and silently took out seven pieces of Magic Crystal.

“One more day,” she said flatly.

“I promised you I wouldn’t hold you back,” Clarence said in a panic.

Beili had already closed the door. She raised a hand and summoned a black butterfly, sending him back into a deep sleep.

As the short-haired boy collapsed onto the stone bed again, Beili activated Beast Transformation, flew out the window, and landed on the roof of the Inn.

Perched atop the roof’s red stone tiles, Beili gazed up at the sky for a while.

The heavens looked as if they had been set ablaze, filled with clouds formed from billowing red smoke.

Even after the sun had set, the sky remained a hazy red and never grew completely dark.

Beili spread her butterfly wings and felt the dark energy churning within her Mana Pool.

That energy allowed her to go without sleep for several days. All she needed was a brief moment with her eyes closed to recover her strength.

As she was lost in thought, a small black shadow suddenly flitted into the corner of her vision and flew beneath the eaves.

It drew closer and closer.

The southernmost Town was sparsely populated, with almost no living creatures around. As a result, the slightest flutter of wings sounded exceptionally clear.

Beili released a trace of Mana and extended her senses beneath the eaves.

There, she found a familiar figure hanging upside down.

It was a bat.

“Doctor Cassius, you were the one who followed me all the way from Butterfly Valley.”

Still perched motionless in her Beast Form, the butterfly spoke in the girl’s calm voice, her wings spread flat.

After a brief pause, she asked, “Did you come to see when I would die?”

Through her Mana, Beili sensed the bat hanging beneath the eaves stiffen slightly. Then it spread its wings, flew out, and landed beside her.

“I was only worried about you.”

The man’s gentle voice came from the bat.

“Is that so?”

Her voice was devoid of emotion. “Haven’t you been looking forward to my death all this time?”

In the blink of an eye, the bat returned to human form, becoming a blond, green-eyed man dressed entirely in white.

The man extended one slender hand and gently cradled the pitch-black butterfly, seemingly carved from black diamond, in his palm.

His hand was cold and utterly devoid of warmth, but Beili did not pull away.

Dense black mist gathered in his palm like flowing sand before trickling between his fingers.

The smile vanished from his face, and puzzlement entered his gentle voice.

“Why would you think that, Miss Bartholomew?”

At his question, the butterfly turned to face him, her black wings gleaming with luxurious dark edging.

“Isn’t that what you want?”

“Wasn’t the whole reason you hid inside a coffin and went to sleep so you could wait for me to die?”
Beili pressed him relentlessly for an answer.

“No.”

Cassius paused, then gently shook his head. “Wanting to see her again doesn’t mean I want you to die, Miss Bartholomew.”

The butterfly flew from his palm and drifted aside. In a flicker of Light, it transformed into a grey-haired, red-eyed girl.

“Whether you do or not, your wish will come true soon enough.”

With her back to him, the girl coldly dismissed him.

“You’ve delivered the message. You can leave now.”

Silence greeted her from behind.

Cassius did not leave.

Through the Mana she had released, she could clearly sense that he was still standing exactly where he had been.

Beili frowned slightly and turned around impatiently, only to find those tranquil, lake-green eyes gazing at her with sorrow.

Sensing the change in her attitude and hearing the dismissal in her words, Cassius took a few steps toward her, stopping an arm’s length away.

He lowered his head slightly to look at her.

His tall, straight figure loomed over the girl, who stood a full head shorter than him, yet somehow he seemed incredibly small before her.

“I apologize for all the presumptuous things I did in the past…”

Cassius’s voice was laden with sorrow and regret.

“Don’t tell me that.”

Her expression remained cold, her mood not improving in the slightest.

“Save those words for her after I die. I have no right to make any decisions on her behalf.”

Her icy words did not deter Cassius. Instead, even more worry surfaced in his green eyes.

“Please forgive me…”

He raised a hand and gently caught hold of the ornate black sleeve at her wrist.

“Please don’t cast me away.”

Doctor Cassius spoke with earnest humility.

It was as though…

She was becoming more and more like that person.

So much so that fear had stripped him of his usual composure and gentlemanly grace.

Beili’s brows drew together.

“You overestimate me, Doctor Cassius. I don’t have the power to cast you away.”

At last, the coldness in her red eyes softened by the slightest degree.

“If you insist on following me… then do as you please.”

She deliberately softened her voice.

“There may be times when I need your help. I brought Clarence from the Wolf Family with me, and if he gets injured…”

As Beili spoke, she considered what she had on her that might serve as payment for hiring Cassius as the party’s healer.

Before she had even finished speaking, Cassius’s gentle smile had already returned. The moment she paused, he swiftly replied,

“It is already my honor to be of help to you, Miss Bartholomew.”

…

Beili also put Doctor Cassius into a brief sleep to verify his identity.

Once again, the result was not the Black Door.

Perhaps Ashera was still trapped in the Far North.

Recalling the dense black mist that had scattered when he stepped onto the stone platform, Beili felt slightly more at ease.

And so, once Clarence had finished resting, they left the Inn and set out for the Far South.

…

After leaving the sole Town at the southernmost edge, the farther south they traveled, the hotter the ground became.

Soon, the land would become a scorching hellscape no longer fit for travel on foot.

Beili condensed her Mana into a black Flying Carpet to replace their carriage.

A swarm of black butterflies supported the Flying Carpet from below, while thin veils of black gauze infused with Mana hung from its edges, shielding them from the searing heat around them.

The three of them changed into enchanted cloaks designed for extreme heat, then activated Beast Transformation. Even with all of them aboard the Flying Carpet, it did not feel particularly crowded.

“Miss Bartholomew, is that our destination?”

A young man’s voice came from the Grey Wolf.

Beili raised her gaze and followed the direction of his lifted paw.

Far in the distance, thick black fog churned as it drew down fiery red clouds, forming what looked like a tornado over a massive black volcano.

A dull, thunderous rumbling seemed to carry toward them from afar.

“Yes.”

The girl’s faint reply came from among the butterflies.
