Chapter 3

Puppy got his new phone.

And immediately bombarded me with messages.

[When are you coming back?

[I just don’t know whether I should make dinner.

[I’m not trying to rush you.]

Me: [I’m not coming back. What’s Puppy doing at home?]

Puppy: [Do you have a business dinner?

[Puppy is waiting for you to come home.]

Me: [I have a date.]

I put my phone away and ignored the message notifications that kept chiming nonstop.

Then I got into the passenger seat of my ex-boyfriend Wei Li’s car.

The restaurant Wei Li booked was on the top floor.

It overlooked the entire nightscape of H City.

If Lu Xiao hadn’t been standing beside our table with a stormy expression, the atmosphere would have been perfect.

His chest rose and fell, his breathing harsh.

A few strands had fallen loose from his usually immaculate hair.

One glance and I knew he’d rushed over specifically to pick a fight.

I looked utterly speechless. “Get lost!”

Lu Xiao tried his best to steady his breathing. “Could your taste possibly get any worse?”

Wei Li looked at me with fragile, wounded eyes.

What?

Wasn’t this pitiful little green-tea act strong enough?

I glared viciously at Lu Xiao. “What does it have to do with you?”

Lu Xiao choked for a second.

I won that round. I wrapped an arm around Wei Li’s neck and was about to leave.

Then Mom called.

“Xiao Xu! I heard you’re keeping some male student? Don’t mess around with men outside. If you’re going to date, date someone whose background you actually know…”

I couldn’t believe Lu Xiao was twenty-four years old and still tattling to my mom.

I roared at him in disbelief.

“Lu! Xiao!

“Are you insane?

“I’m twenty-six! Do you think I’m sixteen? You actually told my mom?

“Are you some model citizen? If me playing around with men hurts your eyes so much, go gouge them out!”

And just like that, the truth was out.

Wei Li, the man being played with, tugged awkwardly at the hem of my shirt.

Faced with my fury, Lu Xiao went mute again.

I kicked him hard, grabbed Wei Li, and stormed off.

Wei Li wilted too.

With tears in his eyes, he accused me, “Sister, you really weren’t serious about me at all.”

I knew it.

My relationship had been completely ruined by that dog Lu Xiao.

Chapter 5

When I got home, Puppy was still standing in the entryway waiting for me.

His whole person looked wilted.

I wasn’t in the mood to deal with him. I threw myself onto the bed and sobbed my heart out.

Not because of the breakup, but because Lu Xiao had dragged my parents into it like a sore loser.

Puppy crouched helplessly beside the bed.

He tried to wipe away my tears.

I didn’t want to see Lu Xiao’s face, so I ordered him to turn around.

Looking at the back of Puppy’s head, identical to Lu Xiao’s,

I couldn’t help asking, “Lu Xiao, why do you hate me so much? What did I ever do to offend you?”

Puppy said, “I don’t hate you.”

“Shut up!”

I kept crying. “Why do you always go against me in everything? If you hate me, then don’t show up in front of me! Have you never heard ‘out of sight, out of mind’? You’re so childish! You’re already in your twenties and you’re still running to tell my parents? What exactly are you trying to do?”

Puppy: “…”

My assistant sent over a document.

Attached was a message: [President Bai, the chairman asked me to forward this to you.]

I opened it and found Wei Li’s file.

Dad had investigated him inside and out.

It confirmed that he was a professional gold digger.

I burst into loud, wailing sobs. “So what? I’m the daughter of a nouveau riche family! I know he’s after money! I’m not after true love. As long as he gives me emotional value, that’s enough! Is it such a crime against heaven for a powerful woman to find a man and play around with feelings?”

Without permission, Puppy turned back around. Wearing Lu Xiao’s face, he looked up at me from below.

He was very beautiful, but I was in a terrible mood.

So I stepped on his face.

He shifted from a half-crouch to a half-kneel, his palm closing around my foot.

“Emotional value purchased with money is a toxic relationship. It isn’t worth sinking into.”

I glared at him. “I’ll play if I want to.”

He suddenly leaned closer and said seriously, “Then play with me.”

My raised leg was already planted against his chest, turning into a buffer between us.

This guy’s expression looked far too much like Lu Xiao’s.

But Lu Xiao would never kneel at my feet and talk to me.

I pulled my foot free and stepped messily over his shoulder.

“You’re Puppy, the one I bought. Of course I can play with you whenever I want.”

He pressed a kiss to my calf. “I am.

“I’m your Puppy. Puppy will never betray his owner.

“So play with me.”
