Chapter 2

I swallowed the rest of my sentence.

Because I suddenly remembered that last Friday, I had met a man who looked extremely… alluring.

He called himself “Boss Fox” and told me to download an app. He said that if I ever met any little animals that could talk, I could get them to register, and once they did, I would earn a commission.

Little animals that could talk? What, ghosts? Monsters?

I thought the man was mentally ill, but he was dressed like he was loaded and was honestly way too good-looking, so I actually did download the app.

And now…

I really had met a talking Little Octopus.

So there really was a fantastical side to this world. But that wasn’t important. What mattered was that I could make money in that fantastical world.

Make more money, and put down firmer roots in this city.

I looked at the little thing in my hand, a soft goose-yellow lump. It practically looked like a pile of shiny gold coins.

“Wuu…”

Seeing that I still wasn’t saying anything, Little Octopus lifted its wrinkly little head.

“There really, really isn’t… any more? I don’t eat much.”

It stretched out one tiny tentacle.

“Just a wittle bit.”

“A little? Sure, and I’m Starbucks.”

I frowned and pointed at the mountain of chicken bones piled on the table.

Faced with ironclad evidence stacked as high as a mountain, Little Octopus blinked, then went flat, softening until it slowly spread into a tiny goose-yellow pancake.

After a long moment, it started crying in a gurgly little voice.

“But I’m hungry…”

Chapter 4

This little thing was pretty slippery.

On the surface, it was sobbing pitifully. In reality, it was still attempting to commit food crimes.

As it cried, it scooted sideways, thinking it was being very subtle as it sucked on the leftover chicken bones.

When you run into a foodie octopus, even giving it your all isn’t enough.

I reached out, snatched the bone away, picked up a bowl, and trapped the octopus underneath it.

“Still eating? I’m confiscating you-”

It pushed the bowl up and looked at me with big, pleading eyes.

I poked Little Octopus’s bouncy forehead again and again. It got poked back under the bowl, then stubbornly crawled out and kept staring at me with those pitiful eyes.

It looked kind of dumb.

If I let it go out to work, would someone sell the whole thing off and turn it into takoyaki?

As I hesitated, something soft brushed against my fingertip.

Little Octopus crawled out from under the bowl and timidly hugged my finger, its eyes drifting uncontrollably toward the chicken bones.

The words I’d been holding back slipped right out.

“Hey… do you want to get a job and earn your own food?”

“Food! Work job, earn food!”

“That’s right.”

I nodded and took out my phone.

Chapter 5

On the screen was the “Huhu Baishitong” app, with a looping success story about a certain jumping spider who had worked its way up to become a guesthouse owner and famous painter.

“Wow…”

Little Octopus’s eyes sparkled.

“He gets to eat chicken at every meal…”

Hook, line, and sinker.

I smiled and asked it, “So if you still want roast chicken, you have to…”

Little Octopus didn’t answer right away. Instead, it twisted its little tentacles together and kept sneaking glances at me, thinking it was being discreet.

“What are you looking at?”

I was baffled.

Little Octopus rummaged around in its own tentacles and somehow pulled out my work badge.

The words “Shen Mo” came into view. Little Octopus held it up high.

“Momo is very gentle.”

Little Octopus stretched out a tentacle and made a chubby little heart over my name.

“Momo, like.”

Hugging the work badge, Little Octopus solemnly presented its proof of devotion and swore an oath to me.

“Momo, I’ll work hard! I’ll do chicken real good!”

How did it become doing chicken?!

My brain was buzzing.

“Not do chicken! It’s eat chicken! Eat chicken!”

This is a legitimate app.

Wait… Boss Fox… is a legitimate person, right?
