Chapter 2

I immediately reacted, swiftly covering my face while not forgetting to put on an act. “I’m so scared!”

“It’s fine,” Xie Zheng sat up, rubbing my hair, and slowly untied the ropes around his ankles. “I think there might be a misunderstanding.”

Actually, there was no misunderstanding.

The reporters were shooed away, leaving Xie Zheng to face the police alone. “This is my girlfriend. We usually fool around like this.”

I sat behind him, nodding furiously, and chimed in, “Right, so what about my door?”

Unfortunately, no one paid me any attention.

“Your stepmother called the police, claiming you were kidnapped by a gang of ruthless thugs.”

The young stepmother, who was about the same age as Xie Zheng, looked guilty. “Ah Zheng, I thought you were kidnapped, so I called the police.”

Xie Zheng sneered. “Then I should thank you for caring about me so much.”

Did absolutely zero people care about my silently deceased door?

I rented this place, and there was no way I was going to pay out of my own pocket to fix the door.

I hurriedly got up, hugged Xie Zheng’s arm, and said sweetly, “Auntie, you’re going to have to pay for the door repairs. You wasted police resources and trespassed into a private residence. But considering your old age, I won’t hold it against you. Just compensate me for my emotional distress and the repair fees, and we’ll call it even.”

Xie Zheng’s stepmother froze, looking helplessly at Xie Zheng as her eyes began to well up with tears again. “Ah Zheng, I…”

Don’t even think about using your connections to get out of paying!

I quickly interrupted her, cutting off her pitiful sob story. “Auntie, don’t worry. We’re a family, so I wouldn’t extort you. You’re a respectable person. If I didn’t let you pay, you’d definitely be unhappy. Zhengzi said you’ve always been generous.”

“Zhengzi?” Xie Zheng’s stepmother seemed to doubt her own ears.

Xie Zheng also looked at me. I gripped his arm tightly to keep him from blowing up at me. “Yeah, it’s my pet name for him. Calling him Ah Zheng makes him sound really hard to get along with. Don’t you think Zhengzi is super catchy and full of positive energy?”

Xie Zheng’s stepmother tried to say something else, but I didn’t give her the chance to spout nonsense. I decisively whipped out my phone and pulled up my QR code. “Let’s add each other on WeChat, and you can just transfer the money to me.”

She looked at Xie Zheng, then at me, and finally added me as a friend in silence.

“‘Substitute classes, substitute exams, package and takeout pickup’?” She shot me a complicated look. “Does Ah Zheng not spend money on you?”

I declared righteously, “We have a purely physical relationship.”

Without another word, Xie Zheng’s stepmother turned and left.

I didn’t forget to remind her, “Remember to transfer the money, Auntie!”

Hearing this, the stepmother paused her steps, and soon after, she transferred fifty thousand yuan.

Whoa! Rich people sure are generous!

I gave a thumbs up and said sincerely, “Zhengzi, your stepmother is truly a Great Philanthropist.”

Xie Zheng stared at me for a moment before the corners of his lips suddenly curled into a smile. That soul-stirring smile on his handsome face made it impossible to look away, but I detected a hint of danger. “Now that we’ve met the parents, why don’t you come home with me?”

I wanted to refuse, but his words carried a thinly veiled threat. “Do you want people to think you really are a kidnapper?”

Since the police officers were still present, I swallowed back my curses and kept a smile on my face. “Sure, I’d love to.”

Xie Zheng left the aftermath to others and prepared to take me home. I asked him to wait a moment so I could pack some things.

I picked up a cooking pot. Xie Zheng, standing behind me, said, “Put it down.”

Alright.

Then I’ll grab my electric fan.

Xie Zheng ordered coldly, “Put it down.”

I tentatively picked up a desk lamp.

He sounded like a broken record. “Put it down.”

“I can’t take this, I can’t take that! You won’t let me take anything!”

I turned around huffily, about to give him a piece of my mind.

Xie Zheng seemed to have anticipated my move. “I’ll transfer a hundred thousand to you in a bit. Don’t take anything with you, okay?”

I immediately softened, giving him a cheeky grin. “Deal.”

Sitting in Xie Zheng’s luxury car, I clutched my battered old phone, unable to stop smiling.

I had made a hundred and fifty thousand in a single day. Anyone would think I’d hit the jackpot.

Xie Zheng had his eyes closed, but he suddenly asked, “That System you mentioned-what did you mean by that?”

“Exactly what it sounds like.” I was busy shopping for a new phone and didn’t have time for him.

He paused, then asked again, “What’s your name?”

“Qiao Lan. ‘Lan’ as in mountain mist.”

He continued, “How many people are in your family?”

I was getting a bit impatient. “I’m an orphan.”

“Are you in college?” Xie Zheng opened his eyes and raised an eyebrow.

“Yeah,” I said with a straight face. “But I should warn you, your movements are way too easy to track. Why were you sleeping on the rooftop for no reason? It’s dangerous. If someone wanted to kill you, they could’ve just tossed you off.”

Xie Zheng stared at me with an indifferent gaze. “Then why didn’t you toss me off?”

I quickly defended my reputation. “Whoa, watch your tone. I’m not some psychopathic murderer. I’m just here to save you.”

“To save me?” He curled his lips into a smirk. “So, are you going to keep saving me from now on?”

I pressed my hands together in a prayer-like gesture, looking pious and serious. “Actually, I support you destroying the world. Just wait until I spend this hundred and fifty thousand, and then you can let the world explode, okay? I really don’t want to go back to being a broke loser.”

Xie Zheng’s eyebrows shot up. “I’m going to destroy the world?”

So he doesn’t want to destroy the world yet?

I called out to the Money-Losing System in my mind. *Get out here! What do I do now? What should I say?*

The Money-Losing System remained silent.

He was staring at me with those clear, sharp peach blossom eyes. I let out a forced laugh and explained, “No, I was just talking nonsense.”

He smiled but said nothing.

The more Xie Zheng smiled, the more panicked I felt. I said earnestly, “Why would you even want to destroy the world? There’s no reason at all. Zhengzi, don’t you think I’m just the type to talk crazy? To be honest, I actually have a mental illness. You shouldn’t believe a word I say, okay?”

“No.” He sat up straight, a half-smile playing on his lips. “Starting now, I’m going to destroy the world.”

I suspected this guy was targeting me on purpose. With a dark expression, I gave him a half-hearted threat. “If you’re going to destroy the world just because of something I said, then I’ll have to save you. From now on, I’ll haunt you like a ghost until you fall in love with me.”

The car slowed to a halt. Before Xie Zheng got out, he leaned in and whispered with a chuckle, “That’s fine. You can take your time.”

“Who knows? You might not even live that long.”

He was definitely targeting me.

As he turned to step out of the car, I gritted my teeth in frustration and planted a kick right on his upturned backside.

“Out you go!”

Xie Zheng was sent tumbling out. He lost his footing for a moment and nearly faceplanted in the dirt.

“Oh, Baby, I’m so sorry!” I scrambled out of the car to help him up, patting the dust off his rear. Xie Zheng’s face was livid, but I gave him a bright, cheerful smile. “I didn’t mean it. You wouldn’t be mad at me, would you?”

The Xie Family Butler came out to greet them. A smile flickered across Xie Zheng’s face as he reached out and gave my cheek a vicious pinch. “How could I be mad at you? Baby, you’re so cute. So cute I could just strangle you.”

I winced from the pain but couldn’t cry out. Instead, I just smiled back at him and gave his cheek an equally hard pinch. I said sweetly, “Baby, I love you so much I could strangle you, too.”
