The B-Rank Guide Who Won Over the Chief Sentinel - Chapter 1

The morning’s work was finally over.

My coworker and I headed to the cafeteria together.

After getting our food, we had just found seats when appraising glances kept drifting over from the next table.

Whispered discussions.

Their voices carried faintly.

“So that’s the B-rank Guide being courted by an S-rank Sentinel?”

“She’s quite pretty, actually.”

“I heard she turned him down.”

“Why? What a great opportunity. Lu Guanshan is so strong, handsome, with a great body. Countless people would kill for that chance.”

“Who knows? She’s probably playing hard to get. She’d better not overplay it and end up losing everything.”

“Such a hypocrite!”

I had long grown used to it and silently ignored the strange looks.

My colleague Xu Fangxu, on the other hand, frowned and glared straight at them.

Once the voices died down, she whispered to me:

“Want to switch seats?”

I smiled at her breezily:

“No need to mind them. It’ll blow over in a while.”

Fangxu had to drop it, stabbing sulkily at the meat in her bowl with her chopsticks.

“These people are ridiculous. Dating isn’t work. Just because the other person outranks her, does she lose the right to say no?”

I sighed without thinking, grateful to her in my heart.

Fangxu was one of the few who supported me.

Most everyone else, including my parents, was urging me to accept Lu Guanshan’s courtship.

I even started doubting myself—had I really been wrong?

……

After my lunch break I went back to work.

A man walked into my office holding a number ticket.

Right away, I sensed a faint pressure.

I looked up from my files.

“A-rank?”

The man sat down across from me casually, his gaze roaming over my body insolently.

It lingered a few extra seconds on a certain area.

He said meaningfully:

“What? Feeling the pressure?”

I frowned and said sternly:

“I’m only a B-rank Guide. If you’re here for soothing, you can go upstairs and find a better-matched A-rank Guide.”

The man smiled suggestively, his manner lewd:

“If ordinary soothing won’t work, you could use a deeper method.”

“Like kissing. Or… negative contact.”

I looked at him expressionlessly for two seconds and pressed the protection alarm with practiced ease.

Security would arrive within three minutes.

This was already the third one this week.

Ever since I rejected Lu Guanshan, people kept popping up, eager to prove their charm by conquering me.

I was just a vessel to satisfy their desires.

Lu Guanshan arrived before security did.

I had no idea when he got here.

Just as the man’s hand was about to touch my face.

The door was kicked open.

The tall man strode in, and the S-rank spiritual power he unleashed left the A-rank Sentinel utterly defenseless.

As the weakest person present, I didn’t get off lightly either.

Cold sweat poured down instantly. My face went deathly pale, and I kept hammering the protection alarm through the ringing in my ears.

Lu Guanshan knocked the Sentinel down with a punch, then turned to me, his voice gentle with concern:

“Are you okay?”

Fighting the discomfort, I said coldly:

“High-ranking Sentinels may not release their spiritual power at will. Lu Guanshan, you’ve broken the rules. Leave!”

Lu Guanshan’s expression darkened at being rebuffed. He said, puzzled:

“I’m helping you, and you don’t even appreciate it?”

As the weakest person there, I smiled with a touch of irony:

“Do I look like someone being helped?”

Lu Guanshan withdrew his spiritual power and dragged the man out.

The sound of fists hitting flesh came through the doorway.

Another hero-saves-the-beauty performance.

Until the security staff rushed in and stopped him.

I slumped in my chair for a long while before heading to the restroom to fix myself up.

That’s when I saw a B-rank Sentinel being helped inside:

“Her spiritual power is on the verge of collapse. Please save her!”

I hurried over to help settle her onto the recliner.

I said to the other person:

“The door is broken and won’t close. Stand guard at the door for me. I need zero interruptions.”

That person quickly agreed and went to the doorway.

I took the Sentinel’s hand and focused, channeling my spiritual power into her mindscape to soothe her.

The whole process took an hour.

When it ended, her complexion had visibly improved, her breathing steady.

I called her companion over and instructed:

“Her condition is serious. She needs soothing here every day for the next three days, and she should avoid missions for a week.”

“I’ll have someone take her to a room where she can rest.”
